Is that taboo to say now a days? I don't know, I just read the board now, I don't post as often as I used to. I've been seeing her perform since April 96', and she's definitely changed her stage persona and her music. She's more diva now than she ever was. Case and point, I saw her last summer at PNC Banks AC in NJ. If I saw the setlist that she played in 97', I would have been elated, but in fact, all of the songs were brought down to a slower tempo, made more "mainstream" and arranged with a needless band. I mean, "Cold Song" was SLOW!!! Deep Water was massacred and it was very, very different from what I remember seeing. If that's selling-out, then Jewel's done it. But it was the same venue she did in 97'. She was just different. The Sessions at W54th taping reminded me much more of the "old" Jewel. She was very interactive with the people, of course it was an extremely small venue. I don't know, I'll stop rambling now. I just saw the post and thought i should respond. I apoligize if I made you feel you had to defend what you said, I didn't exactly mean to do that. As for what you said "I don't want her to be anything...", I have one last comment to make about that, and again I hope this doesn't seem to be attacking your words, but the way I took it when you said Jewel doesn't seem so full of personality etc. that you wanted her to be full of personality like she was in previous interviews, and you were disappointed that she wasn't, that to me meant you wanted her to be "something" ie. her "old" self. Again, I'm sorry if I made you feel like I was attacking you. It's really hard to express yourself with typed words because for one, no one can respond immediately to what you've said to keep you from forming opinions too early, and two, there is no tone or anyway to know the way in which the person meant to express themselves. (This is meant for everyone) Which is exactly why the CD Now review should not be taken to heart because sometimes words sound harsher written than they were meant to be. Sometimes, people aren't being as cold hearted as you think: besides, every writer/singer/actor gets bad reviews, it's part of the business. Now back to what Liz said about people being "sell outs", I would just like to ask you all, what's wrong with that? Why are people labeled sell outs just because they want fame and money? I'm sure no one can say that they have never wanted these things, so why are the people who acheive this labeled with this derogitory name? I applaud Jewel for what she does to make the world a better place, but some people are just not as open with what they do as others. For instance, are Rage Against the Machine sells outs because they have a large fan base and make tonnes of money? or is it because they might support causes you don't believe in, or believe are as important as HGH or other similar organizations ? is Britney Spears a sell out because she doesn't openly take action to make the world a better place? or isin't the world a better place just because these people give us their music? Although you may not like it, someone does, and it touches someone out there who maybe Jewel's music just doesn't for some reason. If there wasn't a variety of music out there, and all that was available was Jewel and Jewel knock offs, wouldn't the world be a little less interesting? Sorry for the novel everyone, just had to get it all out before the long weekend! :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 01:11:25 +0200 From: "Dr. RomeAntic" Subject: * Commenting comments on the review... And whose fault is that? If Jewel did something about it, not only would her name be said with a straight face much more often by all those critics and people who can't digest goody goody songs, but would also make most of us happy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a rock album. However I'd prefer if she didn't use any of her older songs, because she just can't help herself but to butcher them. Every line of lyric is precious, and somehow she manages to drop out some of the crucial ones. Jewel just started to go about songwriting and appreciating her songs differently... and I think it will be many years before something clicks inside her and she makes a simple POY-like album again... that will make millions sigh, smile and cry. If however she decides to restore the original versions then I say: "make an album of old stuff like:..." > I could name several songs that show a more humorous side. Cold >Song, Race Car Driver, Rocker Girl, My Own Private God's Gift to Women, or >Fish Family and Memoirs of a Housewife. I wouldn't say MOPGGTW is funny... sarcastic yeah, pissed off yeah... ha-ha? well sure people laugh at the use of words... and sarcasm is funny... so OK... this could pass... but Memoirs Of A Housewife??? That song is just so sad... I'm really curious as to what you find funny in this song? Fish Family is one of my favorites and that's a great example of Jewel's wit and humor. >She should make an album showing some of her other sides. > Too many people thinks she's one-dimensional. Couldn't agree more! > I guess because most artists put fast and slow, serious and funny songs all on >one album, while Jewel likes to maintain a theme. I think this shows that >she's more of an artist, wanting things to go together. That's just... you know if you gave it more thought you'd realize how untrue this is. Fast song and a slow one can totally maintain a theme... and even if it didn't that wouldn't make her more of an artist... maybe the kind you appreciate more, but not overall. I'm not that thrilled about having a theme led album, but real artists can make even that sound amazingly diverse throught the entire album. I would say August And Everything After by the Counting Crows is the best of the best that way... while Spirit highlights at the end - bumping around musically and lyrically... the rest got boring for me pretty fast - both ways. POY obviously was even less diverse musically... but it had no real theme and lyrics were about all sorts of things and very involved, emotional, passionate. Not the best she can do - but a decent representation of some parts that represent her as a person and an artist. Sprit didn't do her many favors that way. I think I had more to say, but I lost it.... - -- Have fun and stay beautiful Dr. RomeAntic, an angel with the worst stroke of luck and a flash of revelation "It's not like her To make me feel guilty To reduce me to nothing IT'S MY LIFE" Sheila Divine ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #146 ***************************
