[kevin maguire Subject: * Hard Rock Live / playing guitar Jewel-style Greetings, On Jewel's performance on Hard Rock Live years ago, she sang a song with her Dad Atz. What's the name of this song? I think it may be called "Yo", but I'm not sure. Hard Rock incorrectly titled the song "Chime Bells"! I would also appreciate ANY help at all from guitar players who can show me how to play the guitar like Jewel. I've noticed the way she plays songs like WWSYS and YWMFM isn't quite fingerpicking, and it isn't quite strumming with a pick, it's more of a combination of both. I already play guitar, and I'd LOVE to play like Jewel, so if anyone can help me, I would REALLY appreciate it!! :) Khoi ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 May 2000 23:59:38 EDT From: MAC14460@aol.com Subject: * What does Jewel want? Keep reading. > From: "Brandy Doty" > Subject: * Jewel's B-day > > Hey everyone! I like the idea of sending Jewel a book of letters. But I > think instead of the letters being about her and how great she is and how > much we love her, we should write to her and tell her about one great thing > we did for someone else! Like, do something nice for someone and tell her > about it. I agree. Maybe not a physically packaged book with a cover and artwork but, simply several emails from the EDAs would accomplish the same result. As for doing good deeds, what you do, when you did it, and who you are makes no real "difference." The fact that you actually did something is what "makes a difference." You really don't have to complete some major task to "be the difference." Making a conscious, daily effort to be a good person who contribu tes more than you consume will make a difference in the lives of the other 6 billion people on this planet. Jewel has made inspiring people to create a better world her life's work. The following are excerpts from Jewel's 1999 Christmas letter to all EDAs: "...popularity and chart positions have seemingly begun to eclipse and prevent any good which may reverberate from me, from making it back to my attention. - If I am not making a difference, I have no desire to continue at the pace I have. Why would I? - What makes me proud is knowing that there are people I touch that do not depend on me for anything other than inspiration. - - Your letters help remind me that you all get the meaning of music, whether mine or someone else's, more than the critics who write articles on music. Knowing I touch your lives and that in turn you reach out and touch others, effects the deepest part of me, and inspires me in return to continue. - You are all heroic in my eyes for choosing to let it inspire you instead, and to reach out and make a difference. As you know, it really matters." Fellow angels, do what you will. Through the www.jeweljk.com website, I intend to wish Jewel a happy birthday and, tell her a little bit about the inspiration that her music and poetry have made in my life. If many other EDAs do the same thing, I think the chances of her taking the time to read those birthday wishes are pretty good. She's very aware and appreciative of the EDAs. I hope many other EDAs will also send her birthday wishes via her website email. Isn't CDNow's review of Spirit a bit old to anyone else out there? Why do we care what CDNow has to say a year after the album has been released? Not to mention that all of us have our opinions of spirit already so why bring up the topic again? I just don't think it should be a controversial topic in any way, do you? Well how is that for an email just plain full of questions for everyone to pick at. I found the review to be conspicuously belated and very off-the-mark...as far as the "Captain Obvious" lyrics ---> yo what's simple is true! Spirit epitomizes folk-rock, a genre with which the younger generation is not adequately acquainted. If Life Uncommon doesn't move you somethin's wrong...pick, pick, pick...what's the deal with writing "bad" reviews? All who love Spirit, don't be bummed yo; the person who reviewed Spirit shot himself in the foot, as he discouraged any prospective Jewel fans from purchasing the cd --> bad business for CDNOW. Too bad not everyone is capable of embracing the intrinsic value which lies at the very core of the album. "Cynicism is a luxury we can't afford" -Jewel In regards to Jewels BDay, yo y'all do what you want...it shocks me that some EDAs would discourage others from doing something for Jewel's birthday (i.e. "Jewel would rather you volunteered time at a soup kitchen) LOL, now y'all know what she's thinkin...when your ideas get singled out, you know who you can and cannot rely on for support...Show Jewel some love, and do somethin awesome for her on her birthday - she deserves it. I recall this. Loder asked her about the lyric: "There are nightmares on the sidewalk, There are jokes on TV, There are people selling thoughtlessness, With such casualty." in the song Kiss The Flame on Spirit. Loder pointed out that casualty in english means a victim, usually one that suffers a life ending traumatic injury, and that Jewel had used the word to mean "in a casual way. or with casual-ness" and that that wasn't a correct usage. Technically he's right. But it's really obvious what Jewel meant. I didn't really think anything of it. Loder was probably trying to lead her into a discussion about rhymes or how music influences speech or how she comes up with her songs or something... I personally think it was one of the better lyrics that jewel has written. But probably my favorite things jewel has said isn't a lyric or something she wrote but something she said in an interview. It was (speaking of her self and her career/work) "there's really nothing special going on here, it's just a person learning". Everyone goes though the same kind of learning that Jewel has written into her music and works. I think we're lucky that we're lucky that jewel's so open about it, because it gives us the opportunity to learn from her experience and the perspective she takes. But, it really isn't any thing all that special. If you take the time to really get to know the people around you, you'll find allot of the same qualities that you admire jewel for in many of them. At least that's been my experience. - VAB (who's listening to some Propagandhi right now rather than jewel and who's up and at work at this unusual hour because he needed to deal with some backup/recovery stuff). * views expressed are my own, not those of my employers. - --- V. Hi again. Maybe I've just made of idiot out of myself with this whole Jewel/ Britney story. Lots of people wrote back asking for the whole story, but no one seemed to know it all. The only reason I was curious was because I was in a Jewel message board ages ago and someone was saying how angry they were at Britney for saying something about Jewel at an awards show. (???????) Also, the other day I was in a website and it had an "Are you obsessed with Jewel?" page and number 15 was "Your friends are getting worried because you are plotting schemes for a revolution against Britney Spears after what she said about Jewel" Sorry if I've confused anyone but, I was just interested to know the story (if there is one......) I've noticed the way she plays songs like > WWSYS and YWMFM isn't quite fingerpicking, and it isn't quite strumming with > a pick, it's more of a combination of both. I found that learning to read tabulature can make a big difference when learning Jewel's songs..there are so many of her songs tabbed out on the net - I'm like a kid in a lolly shop LOL It is pretty basic - like any music it is all mathematics. The 6 lines represent the guitar strings, and the number on each line shows which fret to put your finger on, as you play that string, and there are different ways to play the string eg hammer-ons and pull-offs. example.. ("Don't" intro): E-----------3--------------3--------------3------------- B--------3-----3--------3-----3--------3-----3--------- G-----0--------------0--------------0------------------- D-------------------------------------------------------- A-----------------2-------------------------------------- E--3-----------------------------3--------------3--2--0- example..(foolish games guitar intro) - ------------------0----1---3---1---0---1----- - --------------3-------------------------------- - ----------2-----2---2----2---2---2---2---2-- - ------0---------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------------------ - ----------------------------------------------- I know this is picking but where tabs really help is when you wanna play the songs the ways you describe her playing them, which is like a cross between picking and strumming. One of my favourites is Studies in Love#12, it is simple and sounds gorgeous! When the notes/strings are played together the numbers are directly above each other eg - -----------3---------- -----------3-------- - -----------3---------- -----------3-------- - -----------0---------- -----------0-------- - -----------0---------- -----------0-------- - -----------2---------- -----2-------------- - -----3---------------- -------------------- I'm trying to get some Jewel songs perfect because I am waiting for my Taylor 912ce to arrive from the US once it has been made. (That's the same as Jewel's cutaway with the abalone and pearl inlays). My husband is getting it for me, he was going to buy me the JKSM, but after seeing the signature model I was a little dissapointed. I thought it would be more like the 314 on which it is based. I also wanted something bigger...so eventually hubby decided to go all out and get me the exact one that I have been dreaming about since I saw/heard Jewel play it on MTV unplugged! Now I just have to try and do it justice :o) Anyways for more information on guitar tabulature, try checking out www.harmonycentral.com for heaps of great stuff! I think it's Far FAR from accurate, (but we all have our opinion...and opinions are like belly buttons, we all have ONE!!) i LOVE this album. When i first heard it, it was intresting, different. But as i really listend to it, it hit me, it was very very good. I felt and still do that the first 7 or 8 songs could have been great singles. the only song i dont really care about is Enter from the East (it's alright cuz it jewel, but other than that, the music and lyric's dont do anything for me). I think as a whole that album is really good, And CD now and SONICNET.com and i think One other all had the SAME review, and Jewel was doing commericals for SonicNet.com "Me music..." and they totally Slam her. Whats up with that? It just might not be Jewel's time to shine right now, with all the Hype over the teenie bands and britney, and all the mickey mousER, etc. etc. BUT Jewel is TRUE and REAL and is an Artis not a Preformer like these boys and girls band, SHe WRITEs her music and songs, she pours her Heart into her work. And thats what i love about her, and i'm sure alot of the rest of you. In closing....just give Spirit a Chance, listen to it, it helps me relax, chill out and all that.
