Even though I'm sure Jewel isn't one for materialistic "thank yous", I would still like to send her a little something for her birthday, even if it's just a card. Which brings me to an important question: how would I get the address in order to send her something? I'm sure some lovely EDA out there has this sort of information. If it is possible for me to come in contact with Jewel via email or snailmail to send her a b-day card or even just a letter telling her why I love her so much, I would greatly appreciate your help. And, Rachel, I'd be more than willing to contribute something, like a Hallmark, for her 26th; just tell me if you need my help. It has been my rare fortune over the last few weeks to be able to spend some time in Alaska. My work has taken me to a tunnel for the town of Whittier about 45 minutes outside of Anchorage (more on that in another post-and a special opportunity for interested EDAs!), so I thought I'd report back to the group. First of all, if you ever get the opportunity to visit Alaska, do so. It's truly a wondrous place. Large, snowy mountains right by blue oceans. Many of the roads (and towns, for that matter) are right on the ocean, making for some nice scenery. I used something like 7 rolls of film, and I hope to put some of the pics up on the web soon, if anybody is interest in seeing them. Something else about Alaska this time of year is that it's constantly changing. They call it the "break-up" when the snow is melting, ice receding, etc. I think to see Alaska fully, you'd have to go in both the Winter (with dog sledding, snowmobiling, darkness), and in the summer (rafting, hiking, lots of daylight). Speaking of daylight-that was something strange. Sunset was about 11:30pm, and sunrise approx. 4am. Gives a whole new feel to 'nitelife'. I spent a lot of my time working, but I had the last day of my most recent trip for myself. I decided to make a pilgrimage to Homer. The first thing you should know about Homer is that it takes *a long time* to get there. If you're used to looking at a map of your state, you're used to 1 inch taking maybe an hour to drive (except you Texans, perhaps). Well, the 1 inch from Anchorage to Homer takes about 4 hours! It's something like 240 miles. But what a drive. Very beautiful. Strangely Blue Water (almost Neon). Bad roads only in a few spots (mostly in excellent condition, considering the winters). So, I finally made it to Homer. I didn't have too much time to see the whole area, but I did make it out onto the Spit. The Spit, for any who may not know, is a stretch of land not much wider than a two lane road that extends for something like a mile or two into the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the coolest places I have ever been. You're driving on this small road, surrounded by prestigious snowy mountains with large rocks on the right being pounded by 10-12 foot Pacific coast waves (impressive to a Florida native such as myself), splashing up onto the roadway. I'll probably put some pics on the Web, but I doubt they'll do justice to this place. Near the end of the Spit, there are some small shops. I remember some time ago, there being a piece of news that some members of the Kilcher family had a store in Alaska. Does anyone remember the name of the store? Or where it is? Anyway, didn't see any statues of Jewel or anything (oh well, ;-)), but it was very neat to see the place that we've heard so much about. Oh--and you know how Jewel has often spoken about the *quiet* in Alaska? It's true! You can stand there and hear absolutely nothing! Usually even when isolated in most places, you can still hear the wind blowing, leaves rustling, birds chirping, etc. But there (at least this time of year), it's completely silent. On my way back from Homer (in a hurry to catch my plane), I did something for the first time in my life--brake for a moose. I found myself on a collision course with this 700-pound-or-so antlered animal, and slammed on the brakes. He looked back at me, as if deciding whether or not I was planning on waiting for him. I fixed his gaze, frozen for a moment. I had just heard the day before about how a lady had stopped for a moose, which then jumped up on her car. J So, after our 5-10 second exchange of looks, he decided that I wasn't going to hit him, went on his way, and I got out my camera and got a picture off. I know someone asked about this, but as of now, I really can't offer too much in the way of what-to-see recommendations. I can offer this brief list of what-to-bring-that-you-might-not-have-thought-of, however: Sunglasses (needed 18-20 hours a day) Bathing Suit, Shorts (for hotel pool, exercise room) Not much need for a heavy coat this time of year-never took mine out; leather or denim jacket would probably do fine. Anyway, sorry to ramble, but I was anxious to share a bit of my experience with you. Again, please look for my next e-mail about a contest that I'm going to do related to all of this!
