Personally i thought this article was rather negative, but it would be naieve not to place it b/c of that....you can make up your own minds about it :) here we go : Jewel (25) A saint or a hypocrite ? (writen by E. Vermeulen) She used to live in a volkswagon-van, yodeld song and became world famous. Her fans find her holy. " Jewel is pure and Clean", they said. But Jewel did get her last tour sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger and she is no stranger to diva behauvior. Jewel is 25 and her money runs like water. Fans worship her on internet sites like Angel Standing By and Godess of Spirit ands Youth. Her style ( Versace in the toendra ) is copied by many, especially in the States. For them she is a spiritual guider who seems to translate their feelings on life - life hurts - perfectly. Critics see her as a fake with the charisma of kamille tea, who pretends not to know that she is blond and Beautifull. Wheter it is a smart marketing trick or naieve innocence, Jewel is a phenomona. She is might not be the only female folk-rock preformer that has made it before the age of 21 (Sarah MacLachlan and Fiona Apple), the difference is that Jewel - as she has said herself- made obscene amounts of money after her first album. " Pieces of you released in 1995" she said. " A collection of a of live songs and studio-tapes from Neil Youngs homestudio. I didn't think that people should be expecting to much of it. Besides I had an agreement with the label that I wouldn't be 'launced' but that I would gradually do things myself. The word 'single' never came up, it was supposed to be just a record, that's it. I certainly didn't see any charthits in it myself. When WWSYS was on the verge of becoming a hit, I freaked out". If any one is intrested in reading the rest of this article please email me, and I will transcribe the rest :) If not, I know I will know I am not wasting my time :) Caroline the dutch listnin' Angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 10:59:55 -0500 (EST) From: Jodi Lynn Damon Subject: * Rare Jewel Songs - another update Hi Everyone, It's me, Jodi with another update on the compilation of rare Jewel songs. Things are moving pretty smoothly, and I expect to start compiling within the next week or so. I already have a lot of potential 'branches' for my tape tree as well (including one in Australia and one in Europe). What I really need now is an audio version of Break Me. Who can help me out with this? Please email me privately, because I would really like to include this song. The only other thing, is I need help coming up with a title. I've come up with a few suggestions like: Jewel Rarities Jewel Gems A Rare Glimpse at Jewel If anyone has any other suggestions, please email them to me. Then when the time comes I will ask you to vote on your favorite title. Please do not email me just to tell me that you like one of the titles that I've listed. Thanks again for everyone who has volunteered to help in some way. And again, feel free to email me with any sugesstions. If you love Jewel then you just love almost everything she sings, her voice is so awesome as we all know, and her Heart, the Heart and SOUL she puts in her songs, is so REAL! so down to earth and we can relate to so much. So i just want to say if you havent really listen to Spirit then you should! the first 8 songs are so cool, i dont really care for #9 Enter from the East, but all the songs after that are beautiful also. They told me I had to send a SASE to get the form. Well, something gave me the feeling they were hiding something, so I pried a bit more into the specifics of the procedure. Turns out they have rather recently adopted a policy of charging $15,000 to nominate someone. . Now for a program that is supposed to honor people who have made such " contributions to the community" it seems like they are asking quite an additional contribution themselves. Ad to this the qoute from their website "sometimes requiring several annual nominations". and you have the makings of a very ugly little machine indeed. I'll just bet they dont give too many first time nominees a star either. Logic would dictate that they sqeeze these "poor starz" for as many years (and fees) as possible. Poor guys like Rodney Dangerfield probably have over a hundred grand invested and they just keep saying " Maybe next year Rodney, you just keep the faith brother" This is scandalous. Not only are these people charging exorbitant fees for an abstract "non-product" that they have no interest or ownership in, but the selection procedure is narrowed down to those who have obviously bought thier own nominations. I asked her how much a grammy would cost me but she said it wasnt her department. Once again, the trusties of of our culture have sold us out.
