I must concur with Mike on this point. When Jewel toured Australia last year, I was rather looking forward to seeing her perform, having enjoyed both of her records and heard such good reports about her live shows. However, I found her concert to be not only seemingly proof that she was merely "going-through-the-motions", but her behaviour toward the few fans who had waited to meet her outside the venue appalling. Indeed, Jewel has been extremely busy these past few years and yes, like anybody she can have "bad" days where she feels tired, or overcome, or overwhelmed and cranky, but do I think this is an excuse for shoving her way through a group of people who supported her music (thus putting her in this position as a "successful recording artist") and refusing to sign things for them? For blatantly ignoring a young girl who had obviously purchased a bunch of flowers specifically for Jewel? No -- I think those things are simply *rude*, pure and simple. I suspect that there is nothing more disconcerting than seeing a performer onstage continually checking her watch, seeming as though she would rather be anywhere but performing at that particular moment. And yes, I know this e-mail will be responded to with a barrage of comments that the "angel" gets tired, and the "angel" gets cranky ... but the fact of the matter is that without people like Mike, without people like me, without folks like yourselves and those other people who tried to meet Jewel in the UK and here in Australia, she would not be in the position she is today. Nobody is denying that Jewel is immensely talented, *nobody*, and I certainly am not, but the fact remains that it is that people recognised this talent, and purchased her records, which put her in the position of relative power she holds today. Indeed, in the press and under other circumstances she has expressed gratitude for the support of her fans ... but I don't care *how* tired, and spent, and fed-up she may seem -- if she doesn't feel like speaking to a few fans who have queued an eternity in the hopes of meeting her, if she doesn't feel up to signing CD booklets or magazine covers, I am sure people would understand if she simply said: "I'm sorry, I'm tired, thank you for coming, but I really don't feel up to this right now" as opposed to simply ignoring those folks and behaving with such a lack of grace and decency. > Without wishing to re-open the debate on how "real" Jewel is, I think it may > be time that some people took their blinkers off and realise that Jewel is a > real person, she's not an angel, and she has off days - and those off days > may be more regular than some people would care to admit, and she *can* come > off as arrogant. I believe that Mike has articulated this succinctly and perfectly: in saying these things, in making these observations I suspect that he (like myself) is not slamming Jewel, or denying her talent, or her capacity for goodness and kindness, he is merely drawing attention to the fact that Jewel *is* a real person and this means that she does get cranky, and angry, and can thus behave rudely. I don't deny this. I am sure Mike doesn't deny this. What I have a problem with, as I suspect Mike does, is the fact that if Jewel *is* feeling too run-down, or too drained, to tour and to accept the duties which come with touring (television performances and interviews, meeting and greeting fans et al) then she is in a position where, surely, she can say: "Stop. Australia [or the UK or Europe] is a long way off, and I am really not feeling up to all that it entails." Yes, fans would have been disappointed, but ultimately, they would have understood if she felt the need to postpone. I, for one, would have rather seen her reschedule if it meant that her performance would have been one which embodied all that I had heard so many of you say her live shows do: passion, and energy, and a joy that only performing live can bring. As it stands, whilst I acknowledge Jewel's talent, and her kindness in many situations, the performance I witnessed and the manner in which she treated those few fans left me feeling disillusioned and cheated. I have never put people in the "limelight", so to speak, on a pedastal and I acknowledge that when many folks on this list call her an "angel" they speak solely in metaphoric terms, as an allusion to her charity work etc, but trust me -- the behaviour I witnessed, along with the lacklustre performance, lowered my opinion of Ms. Kilcher considerably. I echo Mike's words, in closing, when I tell you that whilst I do not seek to deny that Jewel is an enigmatic, gifted and kind-hearted young woman, I truly believe many need to -- as Mike observed -- "take their blinkers off". In some circumstances, indeed in most, Jewel may be (in your perception) "an angel" but in those which are arguably the most important, she can seem anything but "angelic". If her taking time off means that she can reflect on these past years, and regroup and regain some of the passion which originally drove her to perform, then I suspect it can only be a good thing. I'll bet somewhere, at this very moment, Steve Poltz is raising a glass of Guinness... and Jewel? "in silence we hear ourselves" I am very happy for Jewel to be able to take some time off from the rigours of the road; touring, and travelling away from home all the time, is a real grind; it's not healthy to do it endlessly (and with huge celebrity one attracts some pretty strange energy ~ worse-than-obsessive fans and thick-headed reporters, who needs all that?!) the creative soul needs time and space, we all do; when the Artist formerly Known as Swiss Miss decides its time to tour again, everything will be better for the break; Sarah McLachlan and other artists are also on hiatus from touring ~ it's positive now, in this period of Jewel's "retirement", maybe we can all convince Atlantic to release the recording of Jewel's long-ago "early years" ~ 1996's "Fritz Creek Store" yay! cheers, Adrian the-happy-Saint-Patrick's-Day-wishin'-angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 00:35:17 -0500 (EST) From: Jodi Lynn Damon Subject: * Rare Jewel Songs I was just reading through the song archives on the Jewel Standing By webpage and I realized that there are a lot of songs out there that I still haven't heard. That is rare because I own a LOT of angelfood. So I have decided to undergo a major project. Bare with me because I am still formulating ideas. I have decided to compile a Jewel tape of rare jewel songs. Then it is my intent to form another tree so everyone can hear these rare songs. The first step would obviously be to obtain these songs. So I will need a lot of help. If you have any of these songs, please email me privately. Whoever provides me with one or more of these songs wil later be given the compilation and will hopefully be put on the top of the tree. Here's what I need: Be Still My Little Heart Goodwill Store Let You Tears Fall Baby No More Heartaches Partial to Mary Pie Jesu Pretty Crash Raven Rub Somebody the Right Way (This is a Rugburns tune, but if anyone has a recording of Jewel singing it with them, let me know) St. Louis Blues 6th Avenue Heartache Tough Girl Weeping Tree You Make Loving Fun Do Not Think Footsteps of Morning Because I love you PLEASE email me if you have any of these songs. Also email me if you have any suggestions on how I can make this project a sucess. I will keep you updated as this project unfolds. Thanks to everyone who decides to help! DON'T WORRY!!! DON'T FREAK OUT!!! Jewel has been doing ALOT since she's been out of the spotlight. She's writing more rock songs with her electric guitars and with the help of the FAC(Fan Advisory Council) getting together with the Jewel Fan Relations team...trust me here, Jewel isn't disappearing into the wilderness just yet. I personally don't know any details of whats going on, but from what I've been hearing its gonna ROCK! Theres plenty of things going on to keep us busy. Find out whats going on in your local EDA area. Ya'll can do it! Get a Living Room Concert together or an EDAF gathering! Something! Plus, I want my new Jewel material to >be spread out =) I agree with Scott , and go even farther . There were so many appearances by Jewel the last part of 1999 , it was tiresome , just trying to keep up ! And I do believe she may have gotten just a little too much exposure last year ... I know of some people who may otherwise have become loyal Jewel fans , who became sick of hearing about her all the time in the media . I believe that maybe we should all take a deep breath , and Go On With Our Lives , and let Jewel breathe , and go on with her life . I'm sure that when she puts out something new , that we'll hear about it ! In the meantime , let's all appreciate what we all have ALREADY , and not write so much and often about " what's next ," " What's Next !? ... " There are quite a few other Wonderful singer-songwriters out there , that we can explore and very much appreciate , during the Jewel " down--times ." I've written about this before, and maybe it doesn't bother anyone else, but it drives me crazy. I went to a site for the first time today, and amazingly enough, there was some stuff that I'd read before, WORD FOR WORD. Most common is the FAQ list. I believe it originally came from the Everday Angels Page. Most of it is old news by now. Does anyone still ask about smoking, Sean Penn, etc? Or if you really want to use it, just give credit where credit is due. I've noticed that some of you claim copywrite on your page, yet you have photos you couldn't have possibly taken (Jewel as a little girl) and words you have not written. Like stuff taken directly Jeweljk.com, or from Mr. BB's emails. Some of these sites are incredible, very well designed, but I can't enjoy them. I absolutely hate it when one person takes credit for work that someone else has done. If you take something from another site, give them credit for it. I don't want to point to specific sites because this is not meant to offend or embarrass anyone. Just think before you copy, would you want someone to take credit for something that you did? - -Kerri my homepage: We Are EveryDay Angels check out my angelfood page, there's a link from my main page "But don't wander too far, My one constant star, Darkness exists, except where you are, My feet are filled with wandering, They follow your own, 'Cause everywhere you are feels like home." -Jewel, Last Dance Rodeo ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 10:17:15 EST From: EDAngel1014@aol.com Subject: * Pictures Does anyone have any good pictures of Jewel that I can use as wallpaper on my computer.
