Subject: * NJC: hey !!!! guess what!!!! this is what I found in my local paper this morning....Salem Student Honered as Poet On Feb. 21, Lorraine M. "Lorrie" Stewart recieved notice that she would be published in the "outstanding Acchievment" category of the McGregor annual High School Poetry Anthology. The Anthology is a collection of poems from the finest and most promising young poets in America. Stewart is 17 years old and a junior at Salme High School. She is the daughter of Donna and John Beery of Salem. Her journalism teacher, Melanie Dye, informed her of this contest and suggested that she should enter. After thinking about it for a hile, Stewart decided it was worth a try. Her poems were chosen out of 5,300 submissions. Less than 150 poems will be featured in the Outstanding category of the book. The contest had a limit of two selections from each poet; Stewart relied on her friends, family, along with former and present English teachers to help her decide which two she would enter. Bill and Jean Esposito were the two teachers that encouraged her most. "The espositoss have really inspired me to keep writing; they have read my poetry, told me what they like, and taught me more of what I need to know." said Stewart. She showed her poems to various friends, students, and staff of SHS before choosing "Falling summer" and "Thoughts unwind" as the pooems she would submit. The Espositos chose both of the poems as favorites. As Stewart reminisces the day she found out, her face fills with joy. " I walked in the door from work and my mother said 'open it! It's here!' I read the letter and I couldn't do anything but smile. Being published is my dream, and this only encourages me to work for more." But the excitment isn't over yet; Stewart will recieve notice by March 30th of an awards cermony after the "Excellence in High School Poetry" awards are chosen. The annual High School Poetry Anthology will be published on April 15 and sent to many high schools and public libraries throughout the United States. Stewart has been writing since she was in seventh grade and plans to continue writing for as long as possible. After she graduates from high school, she hopes to attend Miami University of Ohio to major in English and Literature courses. From there she would like to become a literature teacher for high school students. If you would like to read my two poems that they chose ( "falling summer" and "Thoughts unwind" )email me privately and I will send them to you) Lorrie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 22:20:12 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." And some people are talking about her career being slow, etc.?! hahaha Anyway, she's doing just fine...give her a break. She's alive and well, I'm sure writing tons of stuff for her upcoming book as well. There are tons of other things to do in this world besides worrying about why Jewel hasn't been in the publuc eye as much...even though she has. She did Austin City Limits, the Exhale show, among other things. I'm sure she's plenty busy. I rarely take part in discussions on this list, and for the past two-three months all I've been doing is just deleting my mail because there is absolutely nothing going on with Jewel now. I have been thinking that maybe her full fledge music career is over as well.. maybe she'll record another album and tour but would the general public still be interested in what jewel has to say. I am sure its easy for her hardcore fans on this list to say OF COURSE. But think of it? Spirit was only certified 3x platinum, and Joy went GOLD and both weren't recieved well by critics. While POY was certified 11x platinum and was critically successfull. If jewel has a book out, I think she should put out the book and a new album simulateneosly..therefore killing two birds with one stone with the promotional stuff and regaining some public interest. but is jewel willing to do all that work? hmmmm.... - -shawn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 23:31:02 EST From: KSco2001@aol.com Subject: * Break this!! In contrary also i do respect that Jewel's taking some time off the media and works on a book and gives now some more attention to herself. When i started to write this subject the only thing i wanted to do is to provoke some new comments by the eda's. The list is not getting a lot of new Jewel reports lately, so i was wondering what Jewel was up to. I am as just as anybody else on the list still a very very dedicated fan who supports Jewel in Every way. Jewel is creative talent and she has my bless for whatever she wants to do. I never meant to be critical on Jewel's ambition. She already has done so much for her fans , that i am the last person who can start Jewel tellin what she need to do. Jewel is now only taking some months of , and as i also told in my last email than i expect Jewel will come back with some wonderful new projects. And it's still a pity that other parts of the world hasn't discovered Jewel the way the american press appreciate Jewel. So i hope you understand my last email, i only wanted to hear some of your opinions about Jewel's latest projects. We are every day angels , and like to stay that way. So don't think that i don't support Jewel, i have always support her. I was very very very happy & delighted to have seen a lot of concerts when Jewel came to Europe for her Spirit Tour last may 1999. Read those stories on my site and you know that i am a fan who cares a lot about Jewel. Hi All... I think people need to stop and realise for a minute that Jewel's had hardly any time to rest during the last 6 or seven years! She was living in her van at first, continually performing at coffee shops and stuff... Then she got POY recorded, and from there it was tour after tour after tour... Spirit was made in a pretty short amount of time, and then it was back on the road... Then she made the movie (or did she make the movie before Spirit? Hehe I'm confused), then more touring... And then she made Joy... Now she has some time to rest for a while... I think we all know that Jewel will be back with a new album during the next couple years. And during the time we wait, we've got a lot to look forward to - RWTD being released on video/DVD, the short stories book released... Don't loose faith in Jewel yet ;) Tom. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 14:52:48 -0800 From: kent_tanimoto@palm.com Subject: * Re: Musical career over? Hi angels! What?! Witnessing some of her UK TV appearances (and there weren't many of those) for Spirit, she was on an early morning TV programme, where she blanked the interviewer (who was asking polite questions) and answered in a manner which was nothing short of rude. My experience of Jewel in person is little better. When I've met her and she's signed items for fans (twice now), she's done so with such ill grace and lack of care that it would have been better had she not bothered at all. I'm not talking about a hugry barrage of a thousand screaming people here, I'm talking around ten well behaved fans on both occasions. Without wishing to re-open the debate on how "real" Jewel is, I think it may be time that some people took their blinkers off and realise that Jewel is a real person, she's not an angel, and she has off days - and those off days may be more regular than some people would care to admit, and she *can* come off as arrogant. I think this song describes her new found love. To see Jewel sing with a guitar and her beautiful angelic voice makes me sometimes cry of emotion of her talent. I am very happy if Jewel takes (read DESERVES) a break and work in a much less demanding pace. After the hectic years of her debut in 1994 has a lot changed in Jewel's life. She is a wonderful example for many musical fans out there. She is one of the few artists that care about her surroundings and she is still very aware of her roots. It's nice to see the charity organizations that Jewel helped to develop such as Higher ground for humanity and not to forget the Clear water project Whatever Jewel does in the future is always her very very own decision, and we do respect that. I can't say otherwise that Jewel gave so much joy to all her fans with her music. Her songs always reflects a lot of different feelings, each song has his own thoughtful meaning and can comfort yourself. I hope and i pray that Jewel will stay forever the same wonderful person as she is. My last memories with Jewel are still my best memories ever. Those special days in Europe may 1999 when i was lucky to travel a lot to see concerts are still my most remarkable time of my life. It was so beautiful to attend concerts and to listen to her beautiful voice in audiences. I wish Jewel will always inspire her fans with her music, she always writes beautiful songs. BUT i had a thought that maybe we could put together a book with hand written messages from EDAs. The messeges could be to tell jewel how she has helped us ,inspired us, made us feel happy, or touched our lives or has helped us look at things differantly. Also if they were hand written it would be more personal and heart felt (rather than typed messeges). Also we could keep them to a 50 word maximum or something and also put them all in a nice book. If nothing else it might cheer Jewel up on a bad day, but hopfully it will futher inspire her to keep writing her amazing songs. Just a thought, let me know what you think and maybe we can get to work on a new project. thanks Louise Tamblyn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 10:18:14 -0600 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: * Putting things into perspective Ok, I've done some thinking about all this "Jewel's career being over, etc." thread. Is it just me, or didn't Jewel release a CD a mere 4 months ago??? People, think about what you're saying. *4* months ago!!! PoY took over a year before it even got alot of recognition! Spirit came out just over a year ago which is still like yesterday in the music industry. There was a gap of 4 years between her first 2 releases....and Spirit went triple platinum! I read someone's post about that as if it wasn't that great. So for that person...how about you go and make a record, and when it goes triple platinum, I'll leave you alone. Do you have ANY idea how few of artists make CD's that reach that milestone? Not many! And you're talking like that's not that good. PoY sold 11 million, true, but that's in a league all it's own (with Britney ,BSB, Garth, Celine, etc.) You can't even use that as a comparison for Spirit. Does anyone remember how excited this whole list was when PoY reached the 3x platinum mark? I do! I was here. I remember all the hype about it. And now we're saying that's like nothing, when referring to Spirit? Give me a break. Her Christmas CD went gold!!! Do you have any idea how rare THAT is??? It was on the charts for awhile too. Jewel made that in a mere 2 weeks...in case some of you didn't know. Let's see...500,000x $15 = $75,000,000! Say she only got 10% of sales...ok, poor Jewel, she "only" made 7.5 MILLION off of that CD, the one she spent all of 2 weeks to record! I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty happy if that were me. I'd say her career is hardly over...and I really think she hasn't even peaked yet. She's about 30-40% up the side of the mountain still...look for her to peak within the next 5 years. For all we know, Jewel may one day be more known for her country or rock CD's than ones like PoY and Spirit. No one knows what the future will bring, but I'd say Jewel is just getting started...she's been through the warm-ups. She's 25. VERY young! Say she does this for 20 more years. She's been doing it for about 8 now. So she's 30% of the way into her career. And this is IF she chooses to quit it all at age 45...still relatively young. Other things to consider...No Doubt had a time span of 4 years between their last release and the current one..and I'd say their popularity has hardly diminished. Metallica waited *5* years between the black CD, and their follow-up. Are they a things of the past? haha...yeah, right. Def Leppard waited at least 4-5 years between CD's TWICE...and both times, their follow up sold millions! Gun N Roses waited 4 years between Appetite, and Use Your Illusions. And that CD sold millions. Ok, back to Jewel now....it's been 16 MONTHS since Spirit. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't even believe anyone is considering all this nonsense. Let's stop this thread now. Jewel already has enough humor in her life I'm sure....she doesn't need people saying all these silly things about her "slow" time now.
