I just wanted to make sure your reasoning isn't to "show them all." I think that if you know you love Jewel, and that her music is better than all the teenybopper stuff, then that should be enough. Just don't start trying to prove yourself, because that might look like you have to defend Jewel, saying she's good enough, and you don't need to do that. I hope this makes sense and I didn't make everyone angry. :) Melissa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2000 23:11:07 -0500 (EST) From: "Iris L. Call me selfish, but I kind of like it better when Jewel isn't some huge pop star who is constant radio play. And I... kinda hope that all the fame dwindles down a bit, that way she won't be "HUGE", but just "big enough" to have a good sized fan base. There are many artists who don't get radio play, and they're still popular with their fan base. Word of mouth helps too. If radio stations and MTV don't wanna play Jewel, thats their problem, their loss. Not ours. We all love Jewel... thats all that really matters to me. And even if her fame died down so much, she went back to singing in small venues and coffeehouses, I'd love her just the same! I think the coffeehouse scene is some of the coolest music out there. Word of mouth helps too. We all > love Jewel... thats all that really matters to me. I totally agree with that. Smaller shows makes for a more intimate experience. And Jewel wouldn't have the pressure to play the same songs over and over. But there would be a downside. With less popularity, Jewel wouldn't be on TV as much. And more importantly, she wouldn't be making as much money, and would have less to contribute to HGH. But in any case, I don't think that getting her on TRL would make any difference. People got New Kids up there, it didn't make people start liking them again. Radio play would probably help though. I never started liking a group/singer because I saw a video, hearing a song on the radio has. And I wouldn't call Spirit a failure. It went triple platinum. Yes, POY sold more, but I think debut albulms tend to sell more. The novelty of Jewel has worn off. The people who keep buying her albums actually like her music. She doesn't sell albums because of some hyped up media image. She has true talent, and will outlast the boy bands and barbie dolls of the moment. (no offense to anyone who likes this other music) So just keep listening and buying albums. Jewel has a loyal fan base, we're not gonna go away. - -Kerri ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 19:53:20 GMT From: "X-Aron-X ." It is obvious that everyone is having different views on the subject of getting Jewel's videos on TRL. When Ashley first suggested the idea, I wasn't quite into seeing it happen, I understand how some of you feel about liking Jewel with just an intimate fan base, I was actually hoping that if more time passed, Jewel would go back to coffee house shows, as well as some others of you. But then I thought about how much Jewel has changed my life, and where I would be if I had never seen the You Were Meant For Me video. (*Which contridicts what Kerri said, because actually some people are more visually oriented and seeing the video helps tie the song all together for them, and makes them want to buy the record.) Think about all of the people who really never gave Jewel a chance before, maybe they'll fall in love with this song, and it will open up their eyes to a whole new life. We have to stop thinking about our selves so much, Jewel has said that she wants to sing until no one feels alone, and yes, maybe she has changed after becoming so popular her priorities are different, but people still feel alone, and if we by the power of getting Jewel on TRL can make one person discover Jewel and feel less "alone" then shouldn't we try as hard as we can to make it happen. We all know Jewel isn't going to explode back into the popularity she used to be, but if we can help just one person, isn't it worth it all? Sorry the post is so long, but this is how I feel, and I know I still probably left stuff out, that you'll be hearing about later. Thanks for your time! I personally think that the people who don't want Jewel to be heard by everyone are being selfish. It is not right to want only a few people to hear her music. Other people who haven't heard her might like her, and her music might make a difference in their lives as it has obviously made in so many of ours. Think about it.
