Subject: * New Jewel photo For anyone who hasn't checked out the new photo of Jewel at JMERCH, I'd advise to do so. It's autographed by her, and they're only selling 250 of these! Making it VERY rare. As far as value goes, I see this being worth ALOT in years to come. And for only $25 now, that's a bargain. Anything limited to 250 is very rare. I have items where 10,000 were made, and that's even considered rare. 250 is like almost unheard of. Get these while you still can, if they're not already sold out. Wouldn't surprise me. But I haven't see a post about that yet. I got mine the day they went on sale, and it came in on Saturday. (Shoreline ampitheatre/Mtn. View, CA/ June 29 1999. - still got >my ticket right here. ) I never posted about this show last summer, so this is a good an excuse as any. :) I still have the draft in my outbox, so here goes: First, some comments on the show Jewel's quote from one (or more) of the shows: "if i could tell the world just one think, it'd be that i love my job." Jewel finally lost the armbands for the Irvine show, but had then on her sweater (sigh) in SF. During steve's set, when he played the star wars song, he accidently (?) sang "george michael" instead of george lucas. he did this twice -- once at shoreline and once at either San Diego or Irvine. The cast of characters: Erin: Jennfier McBride (and friends): Caroline Hamel: Ray Wong: Tony Lai Benjamin, who isn't an EDA Caroline and her bunch of friends and Ray bought our extra tickets -- but I didn't get to meet either of 'em during the show :(. So I'm sitting beside fellow EDA Erin, waiting for Jennifer McBride -- who had won backstage passes -- and her friend Mo to show up. We have good seats -- about the seventh row. At some point during Steve's set, he pauses. Me: "My carphone's on the pill." Steve: "Are you a Rugburns fan?" Me: "Yeah" Steve: "Hey, who's that cute girl sitting beside you?" Me: "I have no idea" Steve [to girl]: What's your name? Girl: "Rebecca" Steve: "Would you like to come on stage and have a drink with me?" Rebecca: "Sure" Rebecca then walks on stage, Steve pours her a glass of red wine, and sings her the je t'aime / je t'adore / que voulez-vous encore song. Rebecca walks back to her seat. Later on, Jen and Mike come by and start talking to Rebecca and her friend. Turns out the reason they're sitting so close to us is that's who Jen had bought tickets for. Anyway, the show goes on. Shoreline was much nicer than Irvine Meadows or Coors (Irvine and SD), as the ampitheather itself was smaller. I wrote down in my notes that she played racecar driver, cold song and chime bells, three of my favourites. When Steve played Gold's Gym Guy, the people in the row behind me -- obviously new to Poltz -- found the song very amusing, and laughed out loud. I sang along and smiled. At the San Diego show, a pair of 9-year-olds found the line from "The ABCs of Love" "she had a lovely pair of Ds" to be rather giggle-worthy. Doug Pettibone was introduced as "Douglas _Price_ Pettibone" during the set. At one point, a fan cheered loudly for quite some time after one of Steve's songs, leading to an impromptu psuedo-song; steve picked up the guitar and sang "i was at the shoreline ampitheatre and a guy wouldn't stop going woo woo woo." Jewel came out during Steve's set, drank some of his wine and joined him for a song. Best sign I saw during the show(s) -- can't remember which one: "what's simple is true: you inspire me." Steve, of course, sang the guy's version of YWMFM: "i stab the yolks with my goddamn fork..." Now, later on Jewel is working her way through her set, and can't remember the lyrics to Little Sister -- as Ian wrote above. Many people yell out that they have the POY lyrics book. One row in front of me someone -- who turns out to be another EDA, Tony -- has the book. I yell at him to move his ass down there. So he gets Jewel the lyric book. She starts to play, but is having trouble reading the book while it's sitting on her guitar. Some guy yells out "I'll hold it" and much to everyone's surprise, Jewel accepts. So he gets up to the stage. The fans boo, because this is not the same guy who gave her the booklet. Jewel isn't quite aware of what's going on, and after another round of boos, Jewel plays while fan #2 -- with a -huge- grin -- holds the lyric book. A highlight of the show for me was when Jewel let everyone come to the front. I was perhaps five feet away from her at that point. It's one thing to be at a concert when you're back way out where, or on the lawn, but for those few songs, it almost felt like an initimate venue. I was so close I could see the colour of her earplugs: yellow. When I returned to my seat, a nice man in the row behind me had saved my pullover -- someone tried to walk off with it in the commotion. Being able to hear the pot bust story, the POY story (modeling convention, I'm guessing) and about jewel and steve's adventures at java joe's -- live -- was something special. Sure, you can read about 'em, and hear 'em on tape, but they're something else live. Fast forward 30 days. It's my birthday (7-29-1999), and my parents and I are sitting in the World Wraps at Church and Market in San Francisco. Some guy walks in and asks me if I was at the Jewel concert at shoreline. He'd recognized me from talking to Steve. It turns out this is Benjamin, who got to hold the POY book for Jewel. To get tickets you pretty much have to live in Austin. See this link for more info: http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/faq/faq.html#12 For all you Austin EDA's, here is the info you've been waiting for: KLRU has updated their answering machine, and you need to listen to KGSR 107.1 FM tomorrow and Friday. They (KGSR) will make the announcement when tickets are available outside the KLRU studios on the NW corner of the UT-Austin campus. Tickets are limited to 2 per person, so if I even get to the studio at the right time I CANNOT get tickets for anyone else. For a map to the studio, go to http://yp.yahoo.com then change your location to Austin, TX or type in the ZIP code 78705. Then search for KLRU. It will take you to an interactive map that you can print. Email me if you have any questions, want some specific directions or if you would like to work out a KGSR listening schedule/phone tree.
