Well, first of all let me put this disclaimer up on the question of the song: Being a songwriter I know that a song can have many different meanings to many different people so it's mainly what everyone gets out of it personally. (Although it is kinda funny to sit there and watch people get your songs totally wrong) As for what the lyrics mean to me basically (without overanalyzing it) it seems that it has something to do with not trying to delve TOO deeply into things and taking a sort of leap of faith (sometimes in the name of love) instead of sitting in fear and contemplating the "what if's"....and if Jewel ever reads this she'll probably laugh....either way, you can try to do one of my songs one day and figure it out ...take that and like it !! ;-) j/k Most of all, just sit back and enjoy it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 10:05:27 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: * Re: About the MTV fanatic (with Jewel and an EDA) Darwin Cuenca wrote: >few hours ago, i turned on the tv and saw jewel on mtv fanatic. so i watched >her and another fanatic fan who interview jewel. so who is this fanatic fan >of jewel? email me about this. So people do not think they somehow missed a rare repeat of MTV FANatic with Jewel, Darwin lives in the Phillipines and saw it there. The lucky Fanatic was fellow list subscriber Sarah B from Chicago. Sarah used to be semi-active on the list in those days (posted maybe once a month or so), but is now in college and concentrating on her studies, so she's only on the Jewel-news version of this list right now. To more understand what her experiences on that show was, below are two messages she wrote about it. The first was one she had MrBB post for her a couple of days before the show first aired (she wrote it, he posted it so she would not get flooded with emails), the second was one she wrote directly to the list a week later, which includes a lot of Q&A. (EDAs asked her stuff about it, Sarah replied) Mike :-) ** Posted two days before the first airing of MTV Fanatic with Jewel: Hi everyone! I'm sorry I have not written anything sooner but I guess I am still in the heaven over the FANatic show. First of all let me say I wish all the EDA's could have gone - it was absolutely amazing and I will never forget it as long as I live. Part of me feels guilty that I was the one picked when I know that there are so many of you guys who are just as deserving. Don't get me wrong I am totally ecstatic that I was picked but I just wish more of you could have had this experience too. Let me tell you a little about what happened. First of all this came as a total shock to me - my door to my office flew open Monday morning and in came my best friend Meg and cameras and lights and Meg was screaming that we were going to see Jewel. I almost fainted (as you will probably see on the video - I then proceeded to go completely nuts!!!!). They got me into a limo and we were on our way to the airport. They filmed us everywhere we went - it was pretty strange at first always having a camera in your face, but I was too excited to notice it that much. Anyway the airport was a huge fiasco because first out tickets were messed up and then we missed our connecting flight. I wasn't complaining though - I mean come on who would? I was still going to meet Jewel so there was no complaining from me! Anyway they ended up chartering a jet to get us there (I was impressed!). We flew out to Montana which was the perfect place to be interviewing Jewel. It was soooo gorgeous with all the beautiful scenery - it took my breath away. Well finally the next day after 1 hour of sleep, no food (because I was so nervous), and much anticipation I finally got to meet and interview Jewel. First of all let me say thank you to all of the EDA's who submitted questions to the list for Jewel to answer over the Internet. I didn't steal your questions, but I did ask some questions that I came up with from all of the questions I have read. I figured that since you guys all couldn't be there the least I could do was to get the answers to the questions that you guys have been wondering instead of the same old questions that we have practically memorized! When I met her I was immediately put at ease. She is absolutely one of the sweetest people I have ever met - really down to earth. She rode her horse up to meet me. We sat down outside of this cabin on the side of a mountain with more mountains in the background (I'm not that good at giving a mental picture - Sorry). She gave me a hug and it was so cool because the interview really turned into more of a conversation then a strict question and answer session. She even asked me questions about my life which I thought was pretty cool. I was nervous that she would think I was just some obsessed fan, but after she got to know me a little the interview turned into a conversation between friends type of thing. She answered all my questions and as long as MTV doesn't cut out the good questions I think you will like the answers she gives (since most of the questions were inspired by the EDAs). All in all I think I only spent an hour with her but I learned a lot and this experience really inspired me even more. We talked about the EDAs a little and she had lots of good things to say about us. I hope MTV keeps that part in because she talked about Jewelstock and how everyone has banded together to raise money for different charities, etc. It seemed that she really loves the support we give her, but most of all she loves the fact that we take her inspirations and give back to the people around us. I made a Jewel book that I keep the lyrics to a lot of her songs in and I showed it to her. She was so funny because as she started looking through it she would say things like "I forgot that song existed!" or "Oh yeah" and begin to mumble the lyrics. It was really cute. I don't want to ruin Monday night for you guys and since I am not sure what they will put in the video and what they will cut I think I will watch the show and if they leave out an interesting questions or funny stories that she told I will write another e-mail and fill all of you in. I am still in so much shock about the whole thing. It was the chance of a life time and I will always remember all that happened. Even just an hour with her gave me this great emotional high that I still haven't come down from - I just want to get out there and make a difference. Well I hope this post answered some of the questions you guys have been having. Like I said earlier I'm sorry I didn't get this out sooner and I hope you guys all watch the show. Oh and please be nice - I was so excited that I come across a little ditzy on tape. I just couldn't stop smiling and I was so nervous, so please keep that in mind. I am not always that nuts, but when it comes to meeting Jewel it is hard to keep from being so happy. I love you all! {{{{{{{{Hugs}}}}}}}}}}}} Sarah (Angel in heaven) ** Posted by Sarah about a week later: Subject: Jewel/FANatic, Update From Sarah Hello again you guys. I decided to write you guys flat out. I felt silly lurking around (since the EDAs seem like family and all) but being on AOL my mail box can barely handle the regular list mail so I figured posting through Mr. BB would be the best. I am sorry it has taken me so long to answer more of your questions concerning FANatic, but I was out of town for a little while. Anyway let me start by saying thank you sooo much to all the positive comments that you guys shared with me. I was really nervous about you guys seeing the interview because I care a lot about what you all think. You guys are like family and I really wanted you guys to enjoy the show. It is really nerve racking to watch yourself on TV I realized. I was nit picking everything I did - I mean come on could I put my hair behind my ear anymore? Or how many times was I gonna give that goofy "I am totally in awe" smile? Anyway - it really made me feel good that you guys were so supportive. It made the whole experience wonderful - Thank you all. Ok now on to the questions I have been reading from you guys and a few other side notes ~ 1) sesykes@juno.com (Scott E Sykes) So what was Jewel like in person? Anything they didn't show that you wish they would have? Jewel was amazing in person. She was very laid back and down to earth. I was really impressed at how "normal" she was. Let me explain that last comment: with all of the pressures of stardom and all of the fame she has recently been introduced to it seems that it would be easy to lose yourself in it all. Jewel seemed to still have her feet planted firmly on the ground. This made the whole experience less nerve racking for me cuz with her friendly nature she put me at ease immediately. There were a lot of things MTV didn't show about the interview, but I will get into that in a minute. 2) dkaracos@utmb.edu (Karacostas, Derrick W.) This is for all those who have had doubts (past or present) about Jewel's attitude, the way she carries herself. I have 3 words for all you people....JUST ASK SARAH!!! Who would know better? She just spent an hour one on one with Jewel. Your doubts will soon be erased....I hope. As I just said she was a total doll. I didn't think it was possible to be any more inspired by her, but after the interview there were so many things that were brought alive inside me just from being around her. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and mine is that she is a great person and wonderful artist! :o ) 3)dkaracos@utmb.edu (Karacostas, Derrick W.) And why did Jewel call us EDA's freaks? Did you catch that Alan and Mike? She seemed weirded out by us all. I didn't get that part. Ok let me explain - MTV cut out a big part in there. When she was talking about being scared of the whole fan thing she meant when she FIRST was beginning to attract bigger crowds. She felt uncomfortable because of all the attention. She said something to the effect that she is just human like everyone else. She then went on to say how cool everything has been that the EDAs have done. She mentioned the birthday wishes as being very cool and that it really makes her feel good that we take the inspiration we get from her and help others with it. The way MTV cut the question it sounded like she wasn't very grateful for the EDAs, but in reality she said sooooo many sweet things about us. :o ) 4) casper31@juno.com (Adina F) Does anyone who knows Sarah or Sarah if you're reading this, know if she got an uncut version of the show for herself to keep? It really would have been nice to see the whole interview. I don't think I will be getting an uncut version. The producer that went with me told me that they aren't supposed to do that, but the camera guy winked at me right then and told me not to worry. I really hope they do cuz something happen with my friend's camera and NONE of my pictures came out of Jewel and me :o ( If I do get anything that I am allowed to reproduce I will let you guys know and maybe we can set up something so anyone who wants a copy can have it. I would be more than willing to do that :o ) 5) kristenluv@hotmail.com (* Jewel *) Okay ya know when sarah was showing her Jewel posters in her room on FANatic? Well, she had this HUGE one of the ANWA picture. Does anyone know where I can get that??? I know! :o ) Actually My friend made it for me. She copied/enlarged it using pencil I believe. Well I just re-watched FANatic and I am trying to figure out what was said and what wasn't said. MTV did a pretty good job with hitting the strong points of my interview, but they did leave out some things that were interesting. I will just give you a brief play by play. First of all the interview was supposed to be done on horse back but because I was so nervous about the interview (I was faint and felt sick, go figure) the producer wouldn't let me ride. He was afraid I would feel worse. Anyway, after Jewel gave me a hug in the beginning we walked over to the chairs and basically just talked about the fiasco I had getting there. She was funny - making jokes about how MTV wisks me away for a fun filled trip of no sleep and endless plane rides. I told her that I wasn't complaining ;o ) She just giggled. When we sat down the first thing she did was throw her gum on the ground - it was really funny. I mean it was just like I was with one of my buds at home! The rest of the interview was pretty much as it came across with just a few things here and there cut out (except for the EDA question which was cut big time!). Jewel expanded on writing as being what she enjoys most by saying that it helps her with all aspects of her life. (I'm sorry I don't remember her exact words here). She got a little more specific with the most autobiographical songs being Nikos (as most of you could have guessed) and Don't. I asked her about what keeps her going and she said that her mother is an amazing source of strength in her life and that she keeps Jewel focused on what she loves. I also asked her who is the most influential artist in your life and she said that it is funny - people think that just because I am Jewel I can't like Marilyn Manson or something, but I guess I would have to say my father. It was really funny the way she said it. She went on to talk about bar singing with her father in Alaska ( no knew stories there though). After the interview we just chit chatted about being on TV and weird it can feel. We walked back up to her horse and she introduce me to the horse. We took some pictures and then we were separated to do more single interviews. I think that MTV did a pretty good job working with what they had. The interview looked choppy but really that was because they kept switching cameras and angles. When they cut something out they generally cut the whole question out. I didn't like how they kept repeating my shock when I saw Jewel - they could have put in some other funny moments - oh well! The one last question and then I promise I will end what turned out to be a novel: dkaracos@utmb.edu (Karacostas, Derrick W.) Sarah, where are you now??? How often do you post to the list? I've never seen a letter from you, aside from the one incorporated into Alan's letter. When did you join the list? Well I am from a suburb of Chicago, IL. I don't post very often to the list, but I read everything you guys write. I have written a lot of EDAs individually concerning different posts and projects. I haven't gotten to go to an EDA outing yet since there aren't many in the Midwest (also cuz I am only 18 and still live with my parents who aren't too keen on the idea of me meeting anyone off the internet). I joined the list the end of March in '97, 2 days after I saw Jewel at the Chicago Theater. That is the run down on me.
