[Mike Connell > Unfortunately I live in South Florida and I'm going to miss the show. I'm a big fan of Tara MacLean ever since hearing her album at Lilith Fair. Not as big as Jewel but I really enjoy her music and the relaxed style. I think she is amazing and would love to see her live, especially in an intimate setting like a coffee shop. If anyone knows if she's going to be in South Florida or even nearby please let me know, or if there is a source of information that would tell me I would greatly appreciate it. I got my wish to see Jewel and although if I only had one wish of who to see I would see Jewel again but if it couldn't be granted I would gladly see Tara MacLean. I also wouldn't mind seeing Rebekkah again, she was awsome and one of the nicest people I've ever met. In fact, if there's anyone that knows of a place, in general, where I can see similar performers I wouldn't mind knowing that either. Thanks ahead of time. With the setlists of the concerts included would this be a really wonderful collectorsitem for all the fans of Jewel out there. Especially since Jewel is taking some time off now and than the fans could enjoy this new booklet. The pieces of you booklet is still a wonderful one where illustrations and the lyrics of her first record could be read. Or the Tiny lights booklet with wonderful illustrations and photos. All this booklets were produced by the Jewel team Biebie Bielat and West Kennerly. So i think this idea could be considered. Thanks! I decided to scan the list archives to see when the term "big blue" was first used on the list while referring to Jewel's guitar. The list was born in February 1995, but was not available in digest form until January 1 1996, so I could not check the early early days of 1995 as I do not have those posts available. All I have is the digests beginning from 1/1/96. From that point on, the very first post that referred to the guitar as "big blue" was written by EDA list Hall Of Famer and Class Clown......CARTER NAVARRO!!!! Anyone here remember him? ;-) Carter's post from April 1996 is below. (he followed it up in the next week with a dozen or so posts referring to it as Big Blue) It is not possible to tell from this post if Carter or Jewel or whomever first called it Big Blue, but perhaps someone else still here from the early days might recall for certain (Greg Dunn? James McGarry?). Mike :-) From: Carter Navarro Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 01:28:28 -0700 Subject: All Things Letterman Thank God Jewel didn't get bumped! Letterman behaved himself with Lunden and left Jewel with plenty of time to strut her stuff. By the way, David Letterman is the only other person I know of who will drink tabasco sauce straight. My breath will never be the same, but it sure entertains my friends. Now, try some Vietnamese fish sauce! Here we go: The song: "WWSYS." Jewel went solo. A brave choice, and one that worked out very well, as it always does. So I guess "Jewel With Band" will be held over as a surprise until the third. She sang the original lyrics to "WWSYS," and I never noticed until tonight that the version on the CD was not the same as that printed in the "POY" lyric sheet. Whooo-ee, did she pull off that note at the end! I thought her rendition of the song on the show was a little less risky than the CD and club performances, until that final note. Congratulations, Jewel, on pulling that off before an audience of millions. The guitar: "Big Blue." My guitar-playing friend said she liked the guitar a lot, but my dominant train of thought during the performance was: "Lord, that guitar is big." Guitar envy, I guess. The blue stage-lighting accentuated that guitar and Jewel's blouse very nicely, but it also fluxed her blond hair into silver a few times, which I found alternately hypnotic and disrupting. The skirt: Jesus Christ! I'm not sure I can summarize my reaction in any religiously non-denominational terms, but here's an attempt: "Jewel looked quite nice tonight." I haven't started crying yet, but I know it's coming. This marks the first time I've seen Miss Kilcher wear something other than pants (well, she typically wears a shirt and boots too, but you get the point). Whoops, I did see her in a dress on someone's on-line photo gallery, so I guess I just lied. Ahh, so what, I'm already booked for Hell anyway. Running theme of the night: Alaska. Probably the only thing dungeness crabs and Jewel have in common. Next stop: 120 Minutes. Then Bimbo's. I'm drinking an extra large quantity of water to prevent the growing threat that I'll spontaneously combust before that show. Bursting into flames during her performance may get her attention, but I'd rather hear the whole show first. After that, flame-out! - - --- Carter "Come On Baby Light My Fire" Navarro ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2000 20:16:53 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: * RE:A LIFE UNCOMMON!! Hey folks :-) After posting about who might have first called Jewel's blue guitar "big blue", I decided to electronically search the archives for the other guitars' moniker "old yeller" (knowing someone would write in asking anyway :-) The first Jewel digest entry that calls the other guitar "old yeller" was from James Judd, and surprisingly it wasn't until the middle of August of 1996. (I was expecting it to be earlier. It COULD have first happened in 1995, but since no 1996 posts call it that until August 1996, I would assume James' post was the first) By the way, the same search yielded an August 1996 post from Carter (Navarro) where he states he first called the blue guitar "big blue" in an "old post about Letterman". So my earlier archeological dig was correct. Mike - The list trivia angel ;-) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #19 **************************
