Finally. My review. no spoilers So, finally saw Ride With the Devil. Now, I didn't really see it 'cause Jewel was in it, but she is, and her performance will be commented on. Now, Ang Lee's last film was The Ice Storm, as close to a modern masterpiece as I've seen and one of my Top 10 Films of the Nineties. So my expectations were high for Ride With the Devil. My reaction is mixed. Mister Lee has crafted an interesting piece of work. It has a lot going for it but it is also lacking a lot of things. The thing that strikes me first about this film is its accuracy and attention to historical detail. It is such a realistic look at an America that, to our modern sensabilities, is absolutely foreign to us. Nothing these people say or do in their daily everyday lives means anything to us now. It is an archaic, base form of existence, remotely animalistic in its lack of sophistication and logic. And that is what makes it so accurate. The movie's utter lack of melodrama is staggering, almost to the point where you want a little throw in there. North and South with Patrick Swayze this is not. It's almost hard to make sense of a film about this time period when told in this way, where the characters' logic is clearly their own, and is extremely hard to relate to. This stunts character development and doesn't allow the audience to become close to many characters. And the level and display of violence is then surprisingly unshocking and graphic. This was obviously an intentional choice. Some called the novel this film was based on "an American Platoon." The film was not like that one at all. Nor was it like Braveheart, to show that impactful violence does not have to be modern. Lee's technique is detached throughout. This film to be is more of an exercise in beauty, as if he is painting a landscape, and many of the shots in this film are strikingly beautiful, like miniature works of art. The first half of the film feels condensed. Like we are being told an awful lot of stuff in a short time and it doesn't mean much to us since we don't know the characters yet. We don't get to know them all that deeply anyway, but again, I think that was intentional, showing that most of the characters had very little depth. This is an era where being able to read made you a scholar among men. Although one of the most fascinating aspects of the film to me was how, even back then, marriage was talked of in the same breadth as slavery. Both are forms of enslavement and restrict freedom. The conditions in regards to slavery presented in Ride With the Devil's time period are now unfathomable to us. Unfortunately however our society is still pervaded by the slavery of marriage. Maybe 150 years from now people will look back at our society the way we look at the one depicted in the film. In terms of performances, Tobey Maguire, an excellent actor with a great resume for a young actor, has a tough role to play and pretty much manages to pull it off, but it's nothing exceptional. Skeet Ulrich is mediocre at best. Jewel does a good job all things considered. She looks the part and is believable, in general. I wasn't blown away but she did show some talent. Ang Lee however is a master of directing actors, she would prob'ly have more trouble with a director whose talents are not as strong in that area. She displayed the greatest deal of intelligence of the characters at times, like commenting on the uselessness of the Bushwackers' efforts. But other times her level of thinking was as unadvanced as her male contemporaries. The best performance in the film by far was by Jeffrey Wright, best known for his work in Basquiat. He kept me in the movie, especially during the duller segments, of which there are admitedly quite a few. Like I said, it's a strange film. In some ways it isn't long enough in the beginning, but at other times it feels slow and kind of dull. A hard film to rate overall, definitely a worthwhile effort but never reaches a level of true greatness. Will prob'ly finish around the bottom of my Top 10 list for 1999, maybe in the 10-15 range if I were to rank everything I've seen for the year. Here's an updated list of everyone's name whose told me they intend on going to one or more of the Tara MacLean shows in Austin, TX on January 21-23, 2000. If you're interested in going to this and meeting fellow EDA's and Tara fan's, e-mail me and I can add you to the list. The show is FREE all 3 nights, start's at 8:00pm, and is at a coffeehouse called Ruta Maya. I don't think there is a minimum age requirement, since it's not at a bar or club. Most going are between 16 and 30. If you see someone's name from your area and want to go but don't have transportation of your own, you may be able to work out a carpool with them. So far the jeweljk store only has the US version. I have e-mailed the people at JMerch a couple of times about it (I'm in Australia) and they told me at the start of this week that they were really going to push it and to check back at the end of the week. So I will. I'm not sure as to whether it will actually be released in European and Australian stores, but you will be able to get it from the jeweljk store. It dawned on me that I had never really shared my collection with anybody. Despite being on this list since mid 1996. Well I've got my Jewel lists up, and you can see them at the following URL: http://www.his.com/~pauls/music/musicfrontend.html If anybody would like to setup a trade just follow the instructions at the website. It's all there I think. If I missed something email me with any questions. I just thought I'd give back to the community that has given me alot over the past 3.5 years. This collection is to thank Dennis Harris for his fabulous humor, Mike Connell for his tireless effort. Even Sean Hooks for his fiery debates, I've always found your posts to be a highlight among the EDAs. Oh and Alan, thanks for taking the time to still keep the lists updated on news, even with your duties over at jeweljk.com. Your work is much appreciated so thanks. I could use an HTML lesson or two tho! LOL! {I thought about using this opportunity to beg you to release the 'Bearsville Sessions' but I won't do that. The last thing I want to do is spark that debate again. . Even if your a newbie with nothing to trade, stop by you just might luck out. Tomorrow I'll try to get the 'rugburn/poltz' lists finished. I have some pretty rare stuff of there's as well. I'd say 65% of my collection is home brew and has never been up for grabs before, I'm sure even the most 'seasoned' Jewel/Poltz fan will find the visit interesting. Some of the recordings I made myself and are original generation 1 stuff. However the site is my first attempt at HTML, so it doesn't look to stellar, but it's perfectly usable. It's safe to say that you won't need the flash plug-in to view this beast...;) So in short come on in! A fun time is sure to be had by all. Once I get the poltz lists up I'll fire a message over to ruglist.
