In the 4th largest city in the country, with over 5 million people there....I've yet to find ONE theater it's playing at! This being the case, I can't imagine it being in more than maybe 10 theaters in the whole country. Oh well. I live in Nashville, and I am sure many people think country bumpkin, but I hate country. Anyway, I went of course I was going to get around to saying Nashville is a big city with ALOT of movie theaters. One of them have 27 theaters with stadium seating. The damn movie is only playing at one little dinky theater for 5 days. Whats up. If I wasn't a jewel fan who hasn't been hearing about it for more than a year I wouldn't even know that there was a movie called Ride with the Devil. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Dec 1999 21:24:09 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: * Jewel on TNT's "Christmas In Washington".....Repeat tonight!!! I feel that it was very nice to be part of this project, I didn't write the message, I didn;t design the card, but I put my liite grain of $ and followed all the progress. This was a group effort, I really don't care that my name is shown anywere, I just happy with the thought of Jewel's face when she gets this on Christmas. It shows the true nature of our following as fans. I think of all us are people who in someway are trying to higher our spirit towards something better, something that lasts beyond a fad or a craze, and when we do something like this, together , we are moving a step closer to that. thanks to the actual people who put the card together, Steph, Joe, Louise (who suggested that all of us give) and more people that escape my mind write now. You guys were great. I would love to see the card . I think it's awesome to give something back unselfishly. That feeling lasts with you forever and I also feel good about us helping out people less fortunate that us through this clearwater project. take care everybody. I bet you're wondering what that means. Don't take it negatively, for this is a mere critique of the goings-on of the list. I agree it's nice to "get in touch with your spirit" and do things to make you more spiritually mature and to have faith and hope in something everlasting. But as a health warning (mental, emotional, spiritual, however you'd like to take it as) it's quite unhealthy to say that Jewel has helped so much, or that "If it weren't for Jewel, I wouldn't be alive right now." No, I'm not hard-hearted, I'm just truth-taught. As long as I've been an EDA (now I don't even call myself that for I have different beliefs on use of the term angels towards human beings) I've always questioned why some people were so fanatically amored with this pop star. Jewel's got great lyrics, yes, she has an uncanny ability to explain that which is obvious and make it seem so profound. I can do that too. I love her voice, it's very nice, she can do many scales. My point is, when I see a bunch of people just soooo excited to get a gift or a card per se to Jewel for Christmas or her birthday even (props to her for saying not to send any birthday gifts.. way to go), I get kind of upset in a way because we should be so excited to give cards and gifts to the ones we love who actually CARE about us as an individual. We should be so excited to give praises to God, the reason we celebrate Christmas because of his son! (That's the real reason for Christmas, by the way, Christ the Savior was born, I do believe Jewel sings about that on her new album Joy). If only we'd step back and see that this is all so silly. I admit I do have the clearance to say all this because I too was once a Jewel fanatic. I almost cried when I met her, I cried at the concert, I couldn't get enough! I wanted to see Jewel over and over and over again however I was sadly limited to just 3 concerts and a poetry reading at the Virgin Megastore. But I stopped and realized that all this oohing and aahing was done over a mere human. A human like myself, with a soul, like myself, and a spirit like myself, and the ability to do ANYTHING she can, LIKE MYSELF. Why all this "ooh wow" and "Oh my goodness it's Jewel!"ing over someone, who was just like me, except with a bit more money in the bank and a better ability to sing and play guitar (like it matters in the end anyway if you can play guitar well or sing well). Basically, I'm just hoping that this Holiday season and all year round, everyone on the list will just notice that they should be turning their focuses of "idol worship" so to speak (i know there ARE some that take it that far) or just plain fanatical obsession to something else that's a bit more eternal and lot more everlasting than a mere girl. Just so you aren't confused, I"m not telling anyone to stop liking Jewel, I know I didn't stop liking some of her music, but really, if there was no Jewel, you'd still be alive, you'd still be able to grow spiritually. Believe me. Take care everyone, Blessings to you all and good tidings for the Holiday season! This is a rich sampler of Yuletide favorites, one that includes Winter Wonderland, the passionate spirituals O Holy Night and Gloria, a swaying, hand-clapping gospel medley and a special Christmas version of Jewel's latest single Hands. Beautifully produced by Arif Mardin, who has worked his magic with such greats as Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand "Joy" is a holiday collection that is at once classic and contemporary. But, as Jewel says, "making this special collection of new and old Christmas favorites was simply great fun," and the kind of cheer she wants to share with everyone. Here it goes again. My sister and I had to drive 4 hours to get to San Diego (traffic). So, we were late to the concert and missed 3 acts. It's ok, I'm not too heartbroken about any of them. Dave Wakeling, Lou Bega (I HATE that song), and Barry Williams (a.k.a. Greg Brady). When we got to the Cox Arena, and after climbing at least 15 flights of stairs, Barry Williams was finishing up, so my sister and I bought some programs, and I got a "I drink like Poltz" shirt. I love it. We sat down in time for Duran Duran, who were surprisingly good live. They played for about an hour. After them, out came the wonderful Jewel Kilcher with her acoustic guitar and started with "Near You Always" (like the Spirit tour). then she talked about how great it was to be home in San Diego, and about how L.A. didn't agree with her, then she sang, the acoustic version of "Who Will Save Your Soul." Of course she was interacting great with the crowd of 13,000 people. Jewel then started to talk about how she was a crappy waitress, and someone dear to her realized that, and taught her the basics of songwriting. She invited Steve Poltz to the stage. I know some of you don't like Steve, but my respect grew even more for him Friday night, he was funny and great all-around. They sang "You Were Meant For Me" together. Then they sang "I Thought I Saw You Last Night", and then a great version of "Silver Lining." Then Jewel walked off to the side of the stage, and Steve sang "Everything About You" with Doug Pettibone on the pedal steel. After, he invited a high school girl (on inspection it was his girlfriend Anya) who got straigh A's on stage. But, this time he gave her 2 passes to DisneyLand, and a 12 pack of ice, cold....milk. Then he started kissing her, and the crowd went wild, and she walked off stage. So he started to play "The Star Wars Song." After the Star Wars song, Jewel walked back out on stage, and invited a high school boy who got straight A's to the stage. Some older man (Steve's manager) walked out and Jewel says "you're not a high school boy, who are you?" Then he tried to kiss Jewel, who dodged it. It was really funny. Oh, then the high school girl (Anya) walks back on stage and throws down the bottle of milk, and grabs Steve and starts kissing him. But, Jewel pulls her off of Steve and they all start laughing, and Anya left the stage. Then there was a great improv version of "Love is a Rose" it was really awesome. Then they were done. After it was Big Bad Voodoo Daddies, who were also pretty good, Alanis Morisette, Melissa Ethridge, who really rocked, Jeremy Toback, and Jars of Clay. By the time Jars of Clay were on, only 1/5 of the audience was left, most left after Melissa Ethridge. Which was too bad, because Jars of Clay were really good. My sister and I left the arena to find a white limo out front. There were about at least 25 cops or security gaurds around it. My sister and I had figured Jewel probably already went home to bed, since she never gets to go home, and that this was someone else. So we waited for 2 minutes and jammed, I never would have been able to ask Jewel for an autograph anyways. Well, we were passing Santa Fe, near Jewel's residence (from what I'm told), and out pulls the limo right next to us. So I of course slapped my forehead, and felt like an idiot. That is my story. Sorry it is so long, just it was really cool. I have the tape to listen to, but it's just not the same. Take care everyone, and I hope you are all enjoying your holidays, mine is complete by seeing Jewel and Steve Poltz. Plus I'm gonna go see Steve at Java Joe's again on Thursday. ~Jennifer~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 17:22:32 -0500 From: MrBB Subject: * MrBB-NEW Official Jewel Website Unveiling!
