Before I get to the point of this post, thought I'd jump on the "Getting to know your EDAs" bandwagon. I know a few of you, but for all the rest... My name's short for Jessica (DUH!) and a lot of my friends also call me Jay, or J-Jay. I'll be 18 on the 26th of December, and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I've liked Jewel's music since YWMFM came out, fell in love with 'Foolish Games' and bought POY. When I heard Jewel was touring, I decided to go along (I wanted to hear 'Foolish Games' live - which, by the way, is the most beautiful 5 or so minutes I've experienced in my life so far). I consider that concert the turning point from which I changed from an average fan into an obsessed crazy woman (I have since settled down a bit). I joined the list a few days later (March this year) and have kept myself happy with plenty of angelfood - which I need the most right now, b/c we got robbed yesterday and they took all the CDs from our lounge room (incl. my Sarah McLachlan) and TWO from my room. The robbers must have good taste b/c out of about 20 CDs they only took POY and SPIRIT - lol. Anyway, like everyone else, Jewel's music has helped me through a lot and I love and thank her dearly. OK, the actual reason for this was a review of Joy in a Melbourne newspaper - - and not a very good one... Jewel Joy: a Holiday Collection Justification? Folky/poetry girl delivers a festering festive album. Festive Favourites? A sadly non-silent 'Silent Night', 'Winter Wonderland', and 'Joy to the World', plus 'Gloria' (no not the U2 or Laura Branigan songs) and 'From a Distance.' They are delivered with all the conviction of Tori Spelling rather than Tori Amos. New Songs? A handful - if only to make some royalties out of this seasonal turkey. They include a "Chritmas version" of 'Hands'- the same old thing with some sleigh bells added. Lowlight? Singing 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' to prove she HAS got a sense of humour, OK! The verdict: 1 star (translated in the key as "don't bother") In a word: rubbish Hmmm...not too good, huh? Well, the good part is that the other four Christmas albums reviewed weren't exactly praised either. Oh well, I LOVE IT - hasn't left my CD since I bought it!! That's it for now - take care Jess ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 99 16:01:38 -0500 From: "The Nirvana Loving Angel" Subject: * Jewel in UniverCity Magazine >Jewel is in the new UniverCity Magazine. It's not listed because it's not confirmed. Jewel will be doing media, promo & charity work in NYC next week, & this show is being considered. If I hear of confirmation, I'll add it to the calendar. Otherwise tune in to be sure. Other than a "Nick News" taping for the Nickelodeon Network (which will be broadcast later this month), all confirmed shows, that we know of, are up on the www.jeweljk.com calendar now. To my surprise, I saw that Jewel was briefly mentioned. It reads as follows: "*A Night Without Armor*, her first collection, was a pop sensation, with 300,000 copies in print. Critics invented new criteria to handle the phenomenon. "Jewel's book of poetry is solid by celeb-poet standards, and a fair bit of it is actually sort of readable in its own right," one noted. By mid-February 1999, *A Night Without Armor* had occupied a place on the *New York Times* bestseller list where it was listed in Fiction for nineteen weeks"(12). Just thought I'd share that with you all. :o) Happy holidays, Drew :o) the angel with no name ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 20:55:07 EST From: KNicky3116@aol.com Subject: * my small Jewel experience Hey Angels, I went to the Jingle Ball in Boston this past Wednesday night with two of my sisters and a friend. KISS 108 had been promoting this event as 21+ and I am 18, but each time we called the venue we were told that I would be able to get in and that it was 18+. So...we get there, but we're already late from traffic and Alanis Morissette was already playing when we got there. I had REALLY wanted to see Alanis, but I was hoping to get in to catch the end of her set. Anyways, we got to the bouncers, and it turned out that they were checking ID's and it was STRICTLY 21+. I told the man that I had called the Avalon multiple times and I was told that it was 18+. That was NOT going to get me in...they were like mafia guys who thought they were the greatest, and to tell you the truth they were a**holes! Well, my two sisters went in because we did drive over an hour to get there and we were not about to go home. Kathy, my sister's friend, actually stayed outside with me. We saw Beth Hart walk in which was really cool, and then about a half an hour later we saw Alanis walk out and she brushed right by me. It was great, but I was still REALLY upset that I was not going to see Jewel. Jewel is why I went, and I was down in the dumps...plus it was cold and drizzling out and I had left my jacket in the car which I couldn't get back to without the parking ticket that my sister had. Anyways, Kathy and I met a group of girls around 15-16 years old who obviously couldn't get in. They were great company, and were just as hard-core music freaks as I am! lol Kathy didn't want to leave me alone outside, but I told her to go in because I wanted everyone to enjoy the concert, even if it meant I had to wait outside. So, she went in and found my sisters. At this point, I was crying. There was nothing I could do, so I just hung out with those girls, and we did get to see Jewel walk in. The Avalon is tiny, and there is no secret entrance so we were right up close to Jewel. I wasn't concerned with an autograph, but the other girls I was with got Jewel's autograph. Jewel was so adorable all bundled up in a hat and long coat. She had strap shoes but with socks on underneath to keep warm. So after she walked in, I was even more upset that those bouncers wouldn't let me in. I know they can get in deep crap for underagers in the club, but I didn't care. One of the bouncers kept his eye on me all night since I was pacing back and forth in front of the doors, and he noticed that I was really upset. So, I had a plan. I sat on the curb near the bouncers and the entrance to the Avalon, and even though I was crying, I just wanted them to know how badly I wanted to go in. It's not like I wanted to go in and drink because all I wanted to see was Jewel. About 45 minutes went by, and I asked a bouncer if Jewel had played yet. He said, "Hold on, let me check." So, he went in for a minute, came out, opened the barrier and said, "Get in, quick. Just get in" or something like that. So, I ran in and found my sisters. Then, I made my way about 3 rows of people from the stage (it was a standing room) and I saw Beth Hart, and then Jewel. Jewel was great and sang: You Were Meant For Me What's Simple Is True: she lost her voice for a minute, then proceeded to drink water and spit it out at Steve Poltz...very funny Hands Down So Long Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul Jewel was very funny and I forgot what she said, but she used some weird voice saying something...I dunno but it was great. By then, I was ready to go since I saw who I needed to see. I did not mind missing Christina Aguilera or Smash Mouth. My sister Jackie and I went outside and I told her that I thought Jewel would be coming out soon. So, we waited and after 10 minutes, out walks Jewel. She was swarmed by a small group of about 10-15 people, but I stuck my head in and said, "Jewel, you did a really great job tonight." She then stopped what she was doing, looked up, waved, and said "Thanks." That made my night. On our way home, we noticed that we passed right by Jewel's limo, and then it was behind us for a while. We lost it after a few minutes though. So yeah, that was my night. Thanks to all who read and I hope it was semi-interesting. I'm not going to proofread so sorry for my bad grammar! - -Nicole:) angel on horseback ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #749 ***************************
