A lot of people on this list probably don't have much money and if they do, it is their prerogative to do what they want with it. Whether they donate to Jewel's charity or other charities, or whether they help people directly or not is also their prerogative. Many people on this list have spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars on Jewel merchandise, which has gone indirectly back into her charity. Others on this list do good deeds directly, and should not be expected, especially if they are poor or students on tight budgets, to make donations to a millionaire. Shall we start a collection for Donald Trump? I hear he's a little tight on petty cash right now, as most of his money is tied up in real estate and investments. Hmmm....maybe some cash strapped students or old folks on fixed incomes or maybe a few homeless can find it in their hearts to spare a few dollars each, skip a few meals, and send their money to the Donald? Okay, that was an exaggeration, but again, those few posts that attempted to coerce people into sending money off to Jewel were unbelievably trite, and dumb. People can do whatever they want with their money, can donate it to whomever they want. Even better than donating to Jewel, they can go out and help people DIRECTLY. Of course, donating to Jewel's charity is great, but it would be even more valuable to go out and make change and help people directly in your own communities, lives, etc. Sometimes the level of retartedness on this list stymies me. Folks on this list have made Jewel rich, poured tons of money that they probably should have saved into Jewel merchandise. To ask them or imply that they should donate more to satisfy some stupid fake moral obligation is UTTERLY ABSURD. I'm only admonishing the few who sent those emails, not the generous people who support Jewel and her efforts. It's a couple of pages long, and is about her childhood and stuff. Worth checking out. Also, I'm in the same boat as Tiffany. My parents won't let me donate, because they don't trust the internet. I'm not even allowed to send money through the post! I'm sure tons of other are in the same boat, so spare a thought for us who feel horrible about not being able to donate. I saved up $40 dollars to donate, and now I can't use it! I don't post to this list very often (in fact, hardly ever), but this is something that I think should be said, and may reflect how other people feel as well. Why do I like Jewel? Because her music, her words, everything about her eminates humanity, what it is to be human, and what it is to be alive. Only two other people have had such an impact on me. I have learned so much about life and living from Jewel that had I never heard her, I shudder to think how I would be at this moment. And for this, though she may never know, I thank her with all my being, all my humanity. ===== ~~~Zed~~~ "The Angel Who's Learned How To Live" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Dec 1999 14:14:46 -0500 (EST) From: Iris Lutfiye Elifoglu Subject: * my today show I know that this is late but i am busy w/ finals and all that but better late then never Well as nicole told you her , her sister, my sister and i went to the today show and even though we got there at 6:30 it was still packed!Well so we waited in the rain.....had to spend $5 to get an umbrella!Anyway We did see jewel adn heard one ong so we were like oh well let's go to the signing and at least get in there. I agree Lori of course, but I cannot speak for anyone but myself. Here are my reasons: 1. I am getting married in may( quite expensive for a large family on both sides) 2. I start college on January 15th I have to pay for tuition and books 3. It is Christmas time and I have an extremely large family 4. I live in NJ about 1/2 an hour from New York city, so it is not very cheap to live here Okay let me sum it all up. I am one broke young lady and if my reason's aren't good enough I am so sorry, but they are for me, and if I have money to spare before the deadline then I will gladly give wether or not my name is on the card or not. I mean I may be confused but isn't HGH an actual charity? So can't thse of us who can't afford it right now donate at another time, or is it very imp. for us to do it now? I am sure that there will be better times right? Well, I am going to go now, Iam sorry if I have offended anyone but I do feel bad and now offended because I feel like I am not doing good. I do good throughout the year I put change in every donations jar I see, and I am currently giving old clothes and shoes to the salvation army.
