We started this thing a while ago and have only recieved money from a small fraction of the people on the list. I dont remember the name of the person who was talking about all this before me but i agree if nobody wanted this card to be sent to Jewel then why didnt they speak up! It will be a very disapointing day when Jewel gets this card and only like a couple of hundred people out of 3000 actually cared enough to donate and make a difference. Im not trying to get on anybodies nerves but come on, donate now before its to late. Just think if we all donated 5 dollars a piece what kind of a diference we could make. Do the math people that puts us at over 15 grand!!!!!! That is allot of money. Also another thing i have been wanting to say. Why do we have only a few people actually helping in the making of this card on the other list. Out of all the people on the list, only and handfull of them are actually on the other list helping out. Okay im going to quit nagging everyone. But just remember when Alan finally does give the card to LeNedra and she gives it to our Jewel, wouldnt it be nice to have the funds to back up what our message is saying in the card!!!! Just my thought on the matter. You all take care. Because if there are people who are interested, who is anybody else to say, "No, that's a bad idea." Expecting 100% of people on this list to respond positively to this project is, frankly, ludicrous. 5 to 10 percent is a good, and realistic, percentage of involvement, I'd think. > I would be interested in hearing from the 2,850 or so of you > that haven't yet donated. Are your funds so limited that you can't afford > to send a single dollar? Well, there are 2,849 others yet to respond to you. BUT, I'm one of the people who haven't donated, and my reasons are varied. First, I've already donated a bit of money to other charities this year: the Red Cross & the Sa lvation Army, as well as some money to the Toys for Tots program, and occasional donations to my church, and various church charities. Could I afford to donate a bit more? Probably, but I do have other bills to pay, and my own Christmas shopping to do, as well... I'm not going to apologize for not participating, because I certainly don't think I've been... uncharitable... this year. > When I first heard about this project, I thought that most EDAs would give > at least five dollars. I was obviously being naive. Possibly... > The only excuses that I can think of for the total donation not being AT > LEAST $15,000 at this point is 1) There are actually 300 EDAs, instead of > 3,000 (2) You don't care about this project (3) You are completely broke > (4) You have somehow been misinformed about how and where to send donations > (5) You are incredibly selfish (6) You are young and your parents won't > let you donate. Well, let's think about it. 1) a 10% participation rate would be a VERY good rate in a population sample of 3000. To expect 100% participation is, as I said before, an unrealistically high expectation. 2) Don't care about this project? Well, yeah, there is a little bit of that, I suppose. Not being all that familiar with HGH, what they do, and what sort of programs they run, so yeah, apathy does take a part in it. I've donated to charities throughout the year that I've donated to in the past... I'm not going to just fire off 5 or 10 bucks to a program I'm unfamiliar with. 3) Completely broke? I'm sure there's more than a few people on this list that are that. College students aren't known for their large reserves of liquid assets (i.e., spending cash -- kegs of beer don't count... :), and high school students & people that are even younger typically have even less than that... this list *is* primarily made up of young people, many of whom may very well NOT have "a measly 5 bucks" to send off to charity. 4) Not likely they were misinformed. 5) Selfish? Let's lay off the guilt... does a donation of $5 dollars once in the year determine whether or not somebody's "selfish"? It's entirely possible that people _just_don't_have_the_money_to_give at this time of year. Christmas is a pretty expensive time of year... is somebody selfish if they've given money to charities throughout the year, but just really don't have the money to spare at this time of year? I'd like to think not. Your charity of choice may not be everybody's charity of choice. A guy I work with likes donating to a charity called (something like) "Save The Children", which I believe is an educational charity. He donated several thousand dollars to this charity this year (obviously, he's making a bit more than I am... :) ... is he selfish because he didn't give $5 to another charity? Again, I'd like to think not. 6) This is a _very_ likely point, given the population of this list... there is a high proportion of younger people who don't have the money because they either don't have jobs, or don't make enough money at their jobs to be able to give a donation. As such, they'd have to rely on their parents to make the donation in their name... there's plenty of parents who may not be willing to make that donation. > Can anyone else think of another reason? 7) In my case, it's simply because I choose to donate to other charities. I'm not going to apologize for this. 8) Other people may not care to donate at all... apathy is rampant in this world... does that mean they're bad, selfish, evil people? Nope. Maybe not as generous and giving as you'd like, but they're not evil. 9) And, more than likely, you set your goals too high. Don't blame the list at large for unrealistic goals being set by the people running this project. Expecting a 100% rate of participation was setting the bar much too high. > Personally, I hope the answer is #1. Anyone else care to give their opinion on this? I think it's more likely that it's reason #9 that I gave above. > How about the small number of you who HAVE donated. > Don't you feel a little disillusioned at this point? Why do you have to make it sound like a let down that "only" 150 or 200 people donated? That's still donations, the project was a success -- you got people to donate money. Don't blame everybody else for your disillusionment if you set the goals of your project higher than was realistic. Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone wanted to know why I like jewel? if so continue reading... Well it started when i was 15, a sophmore in high school.. Everyone in my group of friends were fighting , I had no one to turn to or talk to.. And had so many courses to take so my senior year wouldn't be so bad, which caused me to struggle on getting to my senior year.. And secondly I found out that I had A.D.D. ( attention deficit disorder ) and a mild case of dyslexia ( mainly with numbers ) which made me very depressed... then I found an excape from it all, the trip of all journeys , the vacation that never ends .. "Acid" ... I found someone to talk to finally ( myself ) I had something to do and look at all the time...... unfortunatly this phase of wanting to trip became an everyday thing... I was tripping on acid in school at home with family I didn't care I was happy.. At least I thought I was.. Then I started getting weaker.. My joints started to ache .. and my cartilage started to where away in my body....I did this for almost 2 months straight... to get to the point... one of the only people that I was talking to at the time, helped me threw this and while I was hanging around with her, I would always her this cd that just mellowed me out , kooled me off and just let me relax , soberly mind u I haven't felt like that sober in a long time.. So then I bought the cd .. The songs on that cd opened my heart... they opened my mind.. it was like a natural high... I never heard music like jewels before.. well nothing ever moved me like her music did.. the way she expresses her emotions threw the songs.. how everyone of her songs I can relate to... Her insights on life alone... How she give me the faith that I can make it.. she gives me the strength to believe in myself and how only you can make your life your life how not everything is handed to you .. you have to go for the things that might seem impossible.. Until you make that step... I am 19 now and I've tripped on acid once since I bought her cd,, she has changed my life .. My mom, Well everytime jewel comes on she cries.... My moms thankful to ya know .. And when I found out she had dyslexia that made me realize how much jewel really rocks !! My room is covered in her inspiration.... when I get a scanner, I'll show ya pics of my room .. well this is why I love jewel ... Cuz If I didn't find her when I did , I don't want to know how I'd be .. Thanks jewel... " Giving Back To Jewel " Erin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Dec 1999 03:31:25 GMT From: "R. Coat? EDAF is THERE :) *** I thought this was so noteworthy of an item I'd repost it*** (Launch) - Tori Amos, Brandy, Phil Collins, Michael Crawford, Jewel, Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath, Darius Rucker of Hootie & the Blowfish and Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 will help New York Cares with its coat drive. The organization provides coats to needy people. As for how the stars factor into the charity, their coats will be displayed throughout December at the Warner Brothers Studio Store on Fifth Avenue at 57th Street in New York City, until they're raffled off. Raffles will take place all through the month of December, with the drive aiming to collect 90,000 coats for New York's needy. *** Hmm....this is such a great idea....giving a scrap of clothing you have (and won't miss) or can aquire for next to nothing (yard sales, thrift stores, etc.) to someone who has no means to secure warmth for themselves. What a remarkably simple and direct way to impact another human life. My buddy Dennis Harris recently posted about living in his car as a teen much as Jewel did not too many years back. Can you imagine how different many of our lives might have been if either of these rare souls (or any of our EFA friends) had had to do so through a harsh New York or Boston winter? Or if they had had not even the walls of a vehicle to trap heat or keep the wind's chill at bay? Sadly this is the case for many of our fellow angels who are without homes or means to provide for their families. Thankfully, the means for us to be able to help with this can be found right at home. A old coat, a blanket, a warm scarf, a forgotten sleeping bag, or small tent can all go a long way to literally saving the life of someone who might someday be our next EDAngel bud. To this end, The EVERYDAY ANGELS FOUNDATION is calling on the EDA Community to lend aid to the less fortunate by sponsoring a warm blanket/clothing drive all across the US and beyond. Have something to donate, but don't know where to take it? GREAT!!! We'll hook you up with local shelters and charities. You would like to donate, but can't make it to the shelter yourself? No sweat...we'll find a drop box/point nearby. connect you with an organization that picks items up, or with a local EDA who is going that way. Were you looking for a way to give this holiday season that would have a bit more local impact? This is literally as local as the child huddled away from the cold in doorways not far from where you lay your head at night. Want help setting up your own collection point for your local area EDAs or simply would like to be able to volunteer more in your own spare time? We can help with that too :) This is simplicity itself folks. If it is collecting dust when it could be preserving another being's health and life, why not shed those fashion bygones? ;) Why are we offering our time and services in this way? The EDAF is dedicated to providing the links our online community needs to convert our SPIRIT into real tangible actions and solutions for the benefit of humanity. To become involved in this project please send an email to edaf_west@yahoo.com with the subject heading PROJECT WARMTH. I hope to hear from you all soon...and certainly the home town So Cal crew (hint, hint) ;) Let's warm-up the Holidays by following Jewel's example......
