OK Joe, I will do that since you ask so nicely! :)))) Here's the deal, the above part means this: Albums: - -you can nominate any album released in 1998 or 1999 Songs: - -you can nominate any unreleased song that is on any of the above albums (albums released in 1998 or 1999) - -you can nominate any released song (single/album cut) that was on the charts this year - -you can NOT nominate a song that was released last year or sooner and was not on the charts in 1999 (even if it is from an album released in 1998 or 1999) I hope this is clearer! True, Jewel is a very soulfull artist and an awesome talent but she is not a major money maker! The back street boys for example (not bashing Mike), they sold out there tour in 1 day. That is what everyone likes and everyone wants. Looks, money making abilities, voice doesnt really matter these days, and a sense of style! If there is a good critic out there who knows his/her music, that persons judgement will be passed in a bias way according to that persons thoughts! So what if a critic writes 1 little bad article on Jewel, that's his feeings on the topic of Jewel! Not everyone likes her nor should they have to! I sang YWMFM while trying out for a part in a play that my town was doing. It was "Give my regards to broadway" A musical. I got a major role. Trixi. I was so proud I also won 3 talent shows singing songs by Jewel. See I have been taking voice lessons for 10 yrs, and I neer won anything. But when I began to be a fan of Jewel she tought me that I should sing with my heart as well as my voice. Now I am actually going somewhere as I wasn't before. I even have a record contract! I was noticed finally. I owe Jewel for that one! Hello all! Hope Thanksgiving was wonderful for all of you and hope you are taking the time to enjoy all this season has to offer. This is a reminder about the gift we are putting together for Jewel. As a thank you for all she has inspired in us, instead of buying a Christmas gift, we have decided to make donations to HGH/Clearwater Project. We hope this will become an ongoing EDA project, possibly even adopting a location to sponsor. So if you don't have the money now, there will be other opportunities to make a donation to this project. Many EDAS have already donated to this project. We are currently creating a card that will be presented to Jewel, by Nedra, on Christmas morning. Alan/Mr. BB has been giving us some helpful suggestions, but this project is solely the work of a group of EDAS. You still have time to donate. For your name to be on the card itself, we ask that online donations be made no later than Dec. 9th and mail in donations sent no later than Dec. 6th. This will give us time to actually put the names on the card, but Alan has assured us that all donations made before Christmas will be given to Jewel along with the EDA total. Don't feel obligated to donate, this is not meant to make anyone feel bad. But it doesn't matter how little or how much you can donate. Jewel will be given the total, but she won't know each individual donation amount. OK, now to the actual info 1. If you are mailing the donation, send a check or money order. (Cash isn't the best option, but you can send it. Just make sure you can't see it through the envelope) Make checks/money orders payable to: Higher Ground/Clearwater (absolutely nothing else!!!!) This is how Jewel begins to answer a question about how she stayed focused acting in her film debut as a Civil War era Southern maiden in RIDE WITH THE DEVIL. What she’s really doing is fabricating for the media more legends about her upbringing "I come from where there’s a code of how you get to know people. You don’t assume to know people. You have to learn their respect and likewise." By now most everyone knows that the current pop-folk music darling Jewel was raised on a ranch in Alaska without the benefits of plumbing or television. It’s also well known that in order to save money and concentrate on her goals of becoming a successful singer while living in San Diego, she camped out in a van for a few months subsisting on carrots and peanut butter. What may not be known is that she left Alaska as a sophomore in High School and attended The Michigan Arts Academy to pursue art, acting, music and dance. And now at 25 she is pursuing one of those other artistic endeavors by co-starring -- along with other young up-and-coming stars Skeet Ulrich, Tobey Maguire and Jeffrey Wright -- in Ang Lee’s Civil War period drama RIDE WITH THE DEVIL. Jewel has a candid freshness about her that is part and parcel to her stage presence as singer and while talking with her it’s easy to believe that the role of the earnest, hard working character was written for her. She plays Sue Lee, a single, progressive woman who runs a ranch house in the Kansas / Missouri area in the 1860’s who falls in love with Maguire and Ulrich's characters. When asked about the similarities with Sue Lee she agrees that she could relate. She explains that Sue Lee is; "very earthy [with] an earthy sensuality and she lives on the land, works the land. I grew up working the fields, with a lot of physical labor." No matter what legends abound on Jewel’s life she faces a lot of cynicism in taking the leap from platinum music star to the big screen movie actress. She is conscious of this attitude saying defiantly, "I come from the music world and everyone wants to hate you when you make the transition to another art." It may be because of this that she has chosen a pretty respectable first role. On her choice she comments; "You can’t control how people respond to you but you can control what you do and what kind of role you take." When asked why she chose this role as opposed to an easier role like a romantic comedy she smiles and comments; "If I took BODYGUARD 2 it would have been a certain kind of movie and I would have been regarded in a certain kind of way. But, if you want to be taken seriously do a real role." BORED WITH SINGING The truth is Jewel was getting bored with her singing and she wanted a break from touring. So an opportunity to pursue a different artistic direction seemed necessary. On this point Jewel sounds a bit like an old sage saying, "Every field needs to be left fallow for it to bear fruit again." Then she concedes, "I can’t just sing and tour constantly and act like it’s still inspiring me to do it. Plus, I was raised by a family where I was taught to basket weave, to sculpt, to sing, to dance." When asked if she will take anything from the movie experience into her singing career she comments; "I won’t be writing songs about sitting in my movie trailer or anything." But she adds that while the rhythm of acting is different the mental process is similar to writing songs; "Getting into character is the same thing when I write, as it is when I’m performing. Acting helped me go into a more subconscious level where you [usually] record people’s emotional lives as a writer." FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION Jewel admits that she was unsure of herself and a bit intimidated in her new field. "You talk about going from zero to a hundred. When I’m on stage I’m comfortable, I’m competent, all these things…but you get me acting", she makes a grimacing face and laughs, “It’s not like I surrounded myself with actors who would make me look better. It seemed like the guys could do this in their sleep. I had to spend every free second on how the fuck I was going to get myself doing it. I was stressing out while the guys were like, ‘Whoo-hoo this is going to be a great movie.’ I was like ‘Oh nooo!’" "I came in with zero experience and I could have compromised the entire film,” she says matter of factly. But despite her occasional trepidations Jewel says she enjoys taking on new challenges; "I’d rather drown in the deep end of the pool. If I’m not on the edge of failure I’m not challenged and that’s embarrassing when you’re only 25." The most difficult part of the role was adapting to the necessary physical skills needed for film acting as well as slowing down to fit into a 19th century pace; "For this period piece I had to drop all modern mannerisms, habits and speech patterns. I couldn’t use my hands or my feet." She also notes the amusing adversity she had with the tight fitting period clothing she had to wear; "At first I was so into the corset. I thought ‘Oh you’ll never get me out of this. This is an addiction.’ Then you get bruised kidneys and you start going ’Uggghh It hurts’." MY DIRECTOR MY GURU Jewel credits her performance to director Ang Lee; "My performance you see is him. He told me everything: ‘Don’t use you’re hands. Don’t move your eyes. Up on screen your face is that big, you can’t move around quickly’." She adds; " I just had so much faith in Ang. I felt like he wouldn’t let me do a bad job and he didn’t." One technique Ang used was to have her practice Tai Chi. "He wanted me to be really balanced in meditation." Although she adds with a smile that she was still a bit frustrated; "It wasn’t a real acting lesson. I was like "Is this helping me act now? You sure this is going to work? Will I act good now?" When asked about directors exploiting her beauty and her name for monetary value she emphatically defends Ang’s motives for casting her in the role as Sue Lee; "You can never accuse Ang of putting me in his movie to be sensational. Other directors would put me in a movie simply because my name would draw ticket sales and it would do nothing for my career. Ang put me in the position because he believed I was the right person for the job." All the actors had to attend a boot camp for a few weeks to learn how to ride a horse, shoot a gun and immerse themselves in 19th century customs, literature and attitudes. Jewel laughs that her boot camp was different than the guy’s camp because while they were learning to handle all the activities of life on the ranch she had to learn how to act. Although she notes that it was nice to have a few givens in the boot camp like practicing for one scene where she has to lead a team of oxen. SEX SCENES And what about her appearing nude in a scene? She shows one breast and it is used to feed a baby, she states firmly. There is also one darkly lit restrained sex scene between Jewel and Maguire. Jewel laughs and makes funny faces about the difficulty of shooting the scene; "It’s kind of one of those things where if the water is cold you just have to jump. You can’t think about it because it’s not going to make the water any warmer." She also notes how humbling and silly it can get; "You’re sitting there kissing someone and [the director] says; ‘Make more noises. More wet noises. And could you moan a little?’ And you’re like ‘Gawd!’ There is no hope of it being romantic. It’s not a romantic ordeal." CAREER PHYSICS Jewel’s performance is understated but she certainly doesn’t embarrass herself. She doesn’t think she could have achieved greatness the first time. She laughs about this, "It got to where I wasn’t having a heart attack every time. Which was a nice phase." But then adds, " I never got to the point where I thought, ‘Oh my god I’m good.’" And what book did Jewel just put down? Jewel answers "A book on quantum physics called ‘Schrodinger’s Kittens’. It’s a great book." She continues; " Quantum physics is, for me, the most exciting branch of science and physics right now." Then playing the part of the wise sage again she expands on this; "Quantum physics is dealing with such a particle quantum level of the universe that you have to start meeting the maker. It’s looking like in quantum physics, science and religion are going to start having to come together to some degree." Will Jewel’s next role be a Sci-Fi thriller? Will she write a song about this? Does quantum physics have something to do with the cowboy code? Or maybe this is more media fodder that Jewel is composing to add to her already renowned career. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #719 ***************************
