Except for Jewel. She's canceling her New Year's concert at the Anchorage, Alaska Sullivan Sports Arena. But according to the Associated Press, it may not have been concerns over whether Jewel's spotlight would work that killed the show. Alaskan fans say tickets were overpriced. A seat at the show could have cost a Jewel zealot anywhere from $65 to $99. As it happens, many Alaskans preferred to usher in the millennium in the comforts of home rather than listen to Jewel warble "Hands." Only 1,000 seats were sold out of 8,000 tickets that went on sale October 18. Promoter Rick van Santen couldn't figure out why Jewel was such a poor draw at those prices when Barbra Streisand was asking $2,500 a seat for her stand at Las Vegas. He has dismissed the low ticket sales by explaining that it was much cheaper to see Jewel than Lady Streisand. Jewel had better hope that more people turn out to see her motion picture debut - she plays an adulterous Southern belle in the forthcoming Civil War epic Ride with the Devil. The singer told the Toronto Sun that making the film was a dream. "It doesn't get any better. It's the perfect beginning [to a film career]." Even if that means making-out with Skeet Ulrich? "I was raised in a real voluptuous environment and I definitely think this was part of this script, a different kind of femininity, a more earthy, strong, feminine presence without it being a maleness, you know what I mean?" Jewel explained to Bruce Kirkland. Although Jewel had majored in drama while at art school in Michigan, she still needed a little help when it came to not bumping into furniture. So she turned to Devil's director Ang Lee for guidance. "I always trusted Ang Lee," Jewel gushed. "He's a brilliant artist. He's very insightful. He's very smart. And, if he thought I could do it, then ..." Jewel found herself as she went on. "It did get easier," she says of the three-month long shoot. "The first two weeks were the hardest. But it took at least the first month to start feeling like I was getting my grounding, like I was pulling my own weight." One place Jewel hasn't been pulling her own weight is into the ladies room at CNN's Showbiz Today. According to this Sunday's New York Post, Jewel was about to pay the restroom a visit when a janitor stopped her. He asked her to wait while he mopped the floor. Jewel says he explained, "I will mop and then you will." "I said, 'Are we negotiating? How about I and then you mop,'" Jewel told the Post. "I thought I was defusing a situation." However, the janitor didn't take it that way and decided to take his mop elsewhere. He had some strong words to share with the cute-as-a-button singer as he departed. "I was shocked," said Jewel, forgetting her voluptuous environment for the moment.
