Maybe not... oh well! Steves Angel!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 12:08:41 AKST From: "Summer Star*" Subject: * Jewel's concert cancelled Hi everyone I know there were a lot of people planning to go to the Jewel concert that lived not only in Alaska, but in other parts of the world too. A lot of people bought tickets AND plane tickets and lost money. MAYBE, if everyone who was going to go writes to her or if we just keep sending mesages to all the EDA's... maybe she'll see how much this concert affected other people. I know it's not her fault, but if her management cancelled the concert because of Y2K concerns, why in the world did they schedule it in the first place? That thought must of crossed their minds before. Maybe, like Michiel said, she could move it to the 27th of December. So PLEASE, if you were planning to go to the Jewel concert, or you wanted to go, let everyone know! I know she was going to try to do something in the spring, but for all those people who purchased plane tickets, it'd sure be nice if they wouldn't have to lose money. So EDA's, please let everyone know how you feel about this. Thanks! Superstar folksinger Jewel makes her film debut in the Civil War epic Ride With The Devil on the back of a mule. She is the same folkie singer-songwriter and backwoods poet who grew up calf-roping and herding animals from horseback on an 800-acre cattle ranch in the Alaskan hinterland. More than anyone else in the movie -- including co-stars Skeet Ulrich, Tobey Maguire and Jeffrey Wright -- Jewel Kilcher is at home on a horse. Especially when it's some magnificent steed thundering across a grassy meadow, kicking up dirt from its hooves, defying gravity. But the first glimpse you get of her in Ride With The Devil is a long shot in a bleak, early-winter scene. Playing a Southern belle on a mission of mercy to guerrilla fighters hiding out in the woods, Jewel is a blonde apparition in petticoats. Astride her plodding mule, she moves toward us with glacial speed. By the time she gets close enough to recognize as Jewel -- the Jewel -- all the romance is gone. But the men in the movie have stallions that catch the wind. "I can't show my face to my father," Jewel has joked about the indignity of her debut on the mule. Her father is Atz Kilcher, a former social worker and folksinger who runs the ranch near Homer in south Alaska. Her mother is Nedra Carroll, another singer, who performed as a duo with Atz and now serves as Jewel's manager. Jewel, of course, will get over it. So will her horse-crazy father. Her acting debut was too important to her to worry about image. "This was a dream," she says in an interview about Ride With The Devil. Nothing in her voice or eyes evokes even a droplet of cynicism. "It doesn't get any better. It's the perfect beginning." The dream is a decade old. "When I was in school, I had to take drama, but I had to drop out because I had too many majors." When she made her debut in music and shopped for a talent agency in Hollywood, she insisted on finding someone who also would look after her interests in acting. So, when Ride made its world premiere at Toronto's filmfest in September, Jewel had her day. On Friday, the stakes go higher. The film is being released in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and selected U.S. cities with visions of Oscar nominations dancing in distributors' heads -- especially for the film and for the male leads. In the case of Jewel, the surprise is that she makes the transition from music to acting look so effortless on screen. The truth is that she was scared, even "horrified" and "terrified" by how much she did not know, despite tutoring from director Ang Lee, the Taiwanese filmmaker who has scored two artistic triumphs (The Ice Storm and Sense And Sensibility). She threw herself at his mercy. "It's not that I had a lot of faith in myself," Jewel concedes, "but I had a lot of faith in him." At another point in the conversation, Jewel picks up on the same 'love-thy-director' mantra: "I always trusted Ang Lee. He's a brilliant artist. He's very insightful. He's very smart. And, if he thought I could do it, then ..." Jewel was on set for three months. "It did get easier," she says. "The first two weeks were the hardest. But it took at least the first month to start feeling like I was getting my grounding, like I was pulling my own weight. "But it's not like I watched the film and went: 'I sure did that right!' I never reached a point where I went: 'Yeah, I'm confident.' It was never like that." Jewel fears failure as an actress. The pressure is on, especially after her meteoric rise in music. Her debut album, Pieces Of You, which she recorded at age 19, sold an astonishing 10 million copies. Her follow up, Spirit, did not sell as well, yet still made the charts. Jewel has a third release ready, Joy: A Holiday Collection of Christmas songs, spirituals and a new version of her own Hands. In acting, she still feels incredibly vulnerable. "It's funny," she says. "In music, if I fail, it's just me. I fail. It's my life. It's my job. If I give a bad performance, it's on me. I take the risk and, if I fail, I take the responsibility. "In film, it's a whole family of people you not only respect but you really want to please. The most terrifying thing for me (on Ride With The Devil) was: 'What if I could not hold my own?' And it's a lot to hold your own with these guys (she is referring especially to Ulrich, Maguire and Wright) because they're the best. It definitely inspires you. You just keep your head down and try as hard as you can." What Jewel did not need coaching on is her character's earthy sexuality. Her Southern belle is a woman who gets caught up in a torrid affair, first with Ulrich's dashing guerrilla fighter Jack Bull Chiles, the son of a plantation owner, then with Maguire's more cerebral, sensitive character, Jake Roedel, a German immigrant farmer's son. "Jack Bull was a passionate, romantic thing for her," Jewel says, grinning and flirting her way through the interview dressed in baggy pants and sweat shirt, looking every bit the anti-star who still knows she has the charisma. Even Lee told Jewel that "I had brought a strong womanhood to the film." She exudes passion. "I was raised in the country in Alaska. The women I was raised around were womanly. They weren't men. "I was raised in a real voluptuous environment and I definitely think this was part of this script, a different kind of femininity, a more earthy, strong, feminine presence without it being a maleness, you know what I mean? I think when you're raised on the land, you're given a certain awareness of your sexuality -- a real fertile, real earthy kind of thing." Jewel facts INTERESTS: Music, poetry, dance, writing and acting. CREDITS: Three albums: Pieces Of You, Spirit and her new Christmas release. A book of naive poetry, the much-lampooned A Night Without Armor. HER ACTING DEBUT: "I wanted to do a film desperately and I wanted to break from music." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 18:33:50 -0500 From: Lynn Casper Subject: * tabs hey can someone send me the link to the website that has tabs to all of jewel songs? i had it a while ago, but i cant find it anymore. thanx in advanced. and if u can... please send the link directly to my email address ca01@juno.com .. cuz i have digest and i would like to get the tabs asap. thanks again *Lynn* AOL IM: TRiPPKiCK ICQ: 17038301 http://metrippy.cjb.net Voice mail: 1-888-700-9845 ext 5806 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 18:49:22 EST From: "Christa Hinman" Subject: * My top faves 0=) hey angels... here are my top picks...sorry, 3 is too hard to pick for me, so here's 16...hehe: Down Sometimes it Be that Way I dont Care Daddy She's A Goddess (W/Steve) Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Kiss Your Ass Last Dance Rodeo Money Grey Matter Nicotine Love Silver Satin Wings Carnivore 1000 Miles Away Flower Without You By my Side You're So Small there you go! Like when I was (or I thought I was) in love with this kid Justin, I totally related to YWMFM (let's just say that his feelings toward me were not mutual :-() And when I totally hated my bff for asking this kid Justin out, I loved Carnivore (espically the lines:I did it before / But I won't do it again / This time I'll be my own best friend / And I'll take back my songs and my poetry / This time I won't be so easy to read / And I'll...) and I have just always loved Barcelona (espically live in concert!!!)
