You'll need Shockwave Flash to view it (they'll have a link if you don't have it).. It takes a while to load, but it looks really good.. There's production notes, cast & crew bios (with a fairly outdated, pre-Joy Jewel write-up, the Quicktime trailer, postcards, registration (not sure what for.. maybe they'll give out free stuff.. i'll see.. i signed up..), and more.. a few of the links don't work yet (movie stills, music, desktop themes, etc.), but i guess you can get the majority of the content.. Rolling Stone has a review of the article in the lastest issue with Christina Ricci on the cover.. It says: "RIDE WITH THE DEVIL gives pop star Jewel, 25, a chance to show her stuff as an actress, in a Civil War film directed by Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Sense And Sensibility). Wisely, she takes a supporting role--no Joan of Arc histrionics **referring to the previous review of The Messenger** for her--and acquits herself creditably as Sue Lee Shelley, a pregnant war widow who falls in love with two pro-South bushwackers, Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich) and Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire). Set in 1862 on the Kansas-Missouri border, the film concern young Americans on the fringe of the war who must decide whether to side with the rebels or the Union. Jeffrey Wright delivers the film's most powerful performance as Daniel Holt, a black man who finds himself allied with the pro-slavery forces. Lee, born in Taiwan, has always been concerned with social upheaval, be it on a small or grand scale. And working with screenwriter James Schamus, he transfers Daniel Woodrell's book Woe To Live On into a meditation on the racial and class conflicts at the heart of the American character. Despite the ravage sequence depicting the Lawrence massacre, led by Quantrill (John Ales), at the abolitionist stronghold in Kansas, Lee's film--stunningly shot by the great Frederick Elmes--may prove too thoughtful for the action crowd. Still, don't discount Lee's keen eye for the telling detail. My hunch is his film, lapses and all, will endure. It also has a small still from the film with Jewel sitting down. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 18:20:01 EST From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: * Let's blanket our communities with the EDA spirit! Last night an annual meteor shower passed over planet Earth, and I sat myself in a lawn chair around 1:30 AM and admired the New England night sky for an hour or so. After getting very cold, I collected my empty hot cocoa cup and blanket, and herded my dog Blood back inside, happy to warm my feet on a space heater, flip on my electric blanket and sit down to check my email one last time before turning in. Man, it was cold. Even with a blanket and the warm drink. Even after spending ONLY an hour outside. And then it struck me: it would really suck being homeless and cold this winter. I did the "living in my car" thing for several months when I was 17, but that was in Texas, and I knew it wouldn't be forever. Jewel lived in her van for a few months, by choice, in San Diego, on the beach. Next to her mother. (Damn gypsies, all of us... ;-) But a lot of folks don't have the confidence that they will one day have shelter and security. Many face violence and questionable futures. So, what can we do? Well, Jason Vierling, a member of the EveryDay Angels Foundation, has volunteered to head the effort to help anyone interested in finding ways to help get clothing and blankets to those in need this holiday season. It could be as simple as donating extra clothing, blankets or a sleeping bag to a local shelter in your area. Jason has already identified many organizations holding drives, and is willing to help YOU find out how to keep your neighbors warm in your community. Email Jason at EDAF_WEST@YAHOO.COM with your questions (and suggestions if you know of groups having drives or ideas how EDAs can help address this immediate problem). If there is interest among the EDAs, we'll offer as much support as the group needs! The EveryDay Angels Foundation is committed to helping provide the "basic needs" -- food, clothing and shelter -- in our communities. We have participated in foodbank volunteer activities, and are hoping to possibly do a few more in early December, when the 'banks need help the most (the glut of Thanksgiving week volunteers is past, and the warehouses are trying to get food distributed for the holiday season). We are also looking into our first projects with "Habitat for Humanity" this spring... With no apologies to that infamous monopoly, where do you want to take the world today? Pease" Subject: * NJC: Sarah Slean House Concert in beautiful Worcester, Massachusetts Howdy folks, For those of you who saw Chris Snyder's announcement the other day, of a house concert with Sarah Slean, but said, "Dammit, I can't be there, but I'd die to be able to see her play," here's a second chance for you to see her perform. Same day, different venue & time! Sarah will be performing at my house, just outside Worcester ("WELCOME TO WISTAH!"), Massachusetts on November 20th, from approximately 6 to 7 p.m. She will be performing with her band (consisting of drums, upright bass, and cello, as well as Sarah on keyboards.) This is a chance to see one of the most amazing singers & songwriters I've heard, ever. If you don't know what she sounds like, or haven't heard anything about her, go to her web site, and listen to some of the sound clips available there in wave and real audio formats, at http://www.sarahslean.com. It will be a small, initmate performance -- the performance space is about... 25 feet by 25 feet -- I'm trying to keep attendance around 20 - 25 people. With that in mind: SPACE IS LIMITED!! If you want to come, respond to this email & let me know as soon as possible, please. I've already got 12 definite confirmations, and anticipate a couple more this evening... so -- the faster you let me know you want to come, the happier you & I will be. So, without further ado, here's the details: Who: Sarah Slean, with band (cellist, upright bass, drums) Where: My house, in the warm & sunny little cow-town of Millbury, MA (directions will be provided to those who need them) When: November 20th. Show starts at 6 p.m., doors open about 5 p.m. (I'll provide soda & a few bits of food & the like... if you want anything else to eat or drink, you're welcome to bring it with you. NOTE: This is a "dry" (non-alcoholic) event, and a "smoke-free" venue. If you need to smoke, you will be banished to the porch for the duration of your cigarette... if you want to drink, you will have to wait until after the show, and go find a bar. :) Admission: I'm asking for $15 per person (which is more than what Chris is asking, because Sarah will be playing with a band at my place, and there's 4 people then who need to get paid -- however, if this is too steep, but you can swing $10, let me know, and maybe we can work something out...) If you're interested in attending on Saturday evening, respond to this email and let me know as soon as you can. Hope to see some of you there...
