Hello, hello! Another new face peeks out. :) I've been lurking for a *very* short time (on digest mode, no less, due to a rather grumpy ISP!), but I'd like to introduce myself. My name's Jessica, and I'm from Florida, where it's simply refusing to get chilly in time for the holidays this year. Nevertheless, I'm in cheery, seasonal mood, and I'll bet you can all guess why. =) That's right: I picked up my own copy of "Joy" last night, and it's been spinning 'round in my CD player ever since. Another incredible release from Jewel, and another CD that my parents will want to "borrow" if they get a hold of it. >g< I've been on a couple of lists, and I normally don't poke my head into the discussion for ages; I like to get a good idea of what the community's like, and.. well, I'm shy. :) But you all seem so nice and so kind--in fact, from my experience, "kind" is *just* the word to describe Jewel's fans. I haven't run into a single EDA online that hasn't been good-hearted and enthusiastic.. it looks like that's a trend amongst EDAs! The difference between this list and others I've been on is truly staggering. I hope you don't mind me joining you; I'll behave! :D I don't want to turn my first post into a novella, so I'll save my stories and questions and ponderings for a later date. I just wanted to let you all know what a pleasant surprise it was to find this list even *better* than what I expected (and that's saying a lot!). If you reply, please speak softly: this angel blushes easily. :) Goodnight, and God bless! - --Jessica ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Nov 1999 22:09:58 -0800 (PST) From: Michiel van Gorkum Subject: * Words of the beautiful Sue Lee song Hello Jewelfans, Is there anybody out there, who knows the words of the written song by Jewel for her first movie Ride with the devil titled Sue Lee song? I just was amazed with the beauty of the song about war and friendship. Jewel is so well educated songwriter that every new song to me tears of joy brings. Her lyrics are just phenomenal, and i would everybody recommend this japanese angelfood tape that i just recently own to get as well a copy of. Of course you can always get my dutch eda tapes if you like from Jewel's spirit tour in may 1999 Europe. It has taken just six years for her nomad days of living in a van with her mother to transform into a luxury career rig tooling down a four-lane highway of artistic expression. She tours the world singing to packed arenas, models fashionably, writes best-selling poetry ("A Night Without Armor") and has been quick to put her resources and talent to use for humanitarian causes. At the top of her creative game, Jewel has managed the feat of keeping an open heart. The latest expression of her sharing spirit arrives gift-wrapped on a new CD called Joy: A Holiday Collection. In it she serves up a baker's dozen of Yuletide musical chestnuts ranging from a pure "Silent Night" to a jaunty romp with "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer." It also features a medley combining the classic "Go Tell It On The Mountain" with her own "Life Uncommon" and the song Bette Midler made famous, "From A Distance." It's not surprising that a wintery theme should appeal to Jewel, since she spent most of her life growing up in Anchorage, Alaska -- home of the brave, land of the cold. Hers was a musical family. She learned to yodel expertly from her father and she discovered the intimate beauty of vocal harmony from her singing mother, Nedra. A life-changing experience happened when Jewel was "adopted" into an Ottawa Indian group and was allowed to participate in sacred tribal ceremonies. There, her confidence that she had gifts to share with the world was sparked in a way that has since been realized. Jewel focused on voice classes with opera training and also studied art, writing and dance. She even landed the lead in a college campus production of "Spoon River Anthology." In the early '90s, Jewel moved to San Diego with her mother and worked as a waitress. Soon she began playing regular gigs at a coffeehouse where she would tell stories and sing songs in what were sometimes 3-hour sets. Then she got a chance to perform with a band called The Rugburns, where she met her sometime writing partner Steve Poltz. It wasn't long before the ripples of her growing popularity eventually blossomed into a recording contract. She has since released three studio albums. She recently added professional acting to her list of credits, playing a role in the Civil War epic Ride With the Devil, directed by Ang Lee. Jewel has also taped an upcoming Yule-themed PBS special edition for its ongoing musical performance series, Sessions at West 54th, which will air on TV throughout December. As an added good deed in keeping with the season, Jewel issued a not-for-profit single of her "Life Uncommon" song with all proceeds donated to the Clearwater Project, which helps poor people get access to clean water. Like Jewel, it is a warm sentiment in a sometimes-chilly world. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 13:07:28 +0100 From: Seyfhor Subject: * Re: Video of Gloria I'm very sad. Except for 1 or 2 yrs, I think every year I've been in an Christmasy spirit but this year I really am getting motivation hehe :) I suggested to a few other EDAs that I'm friends with in my area that we should have a sort of...what I call..."Christmas Party EDA style!". This would entail the usual Christmas party, but would have: - -performances by EDAs of songs, poetry, etc. - -exchanges of angelfood - -Perhaps a polyanna if people can commit early enough - -and I was thinking of possibly some sort of service for the homeless/poor children who may or may not be so fortunate this year to give to the community too. - -maybe more! However, there's a PROBLEM: No place to have it so far. I was sorta hoping to set it up that we would hold it in the general Philadelphia or Southern NJ area because that's more or less a central location for EDAs in the area, however, everybody who I've asked has too small an apartment or is not in a position to offer their apartment/house/whatever to having this. I am in the latter as I live with 5 other guys unfortunately. Now, what I'm asking...if someone has an apartment big enough to host 20 people more or less(I doubt any more than that will show), please: - -email me at kaosking@voicenet.com - -ICQ me - my ICQ UIN is 175984 - -IM me on AOL IM - my AIM screen name is "espoire8"(without the quotes) Those of you who can't offer their apartment but are interested in attending, helping out, whatever...you can contact me too, but I'm moreso worried about finding a place to host it. Stay tuned in the near future for a definite date and more details about this Christmas extravaganza to remember :) Take care everybody and Have a WAY splendid Day :o) Seth D. The runaway success of the Tommy Hilfiger campaign featuring Jewel(Pictured), Lenny Kravitz and Britney Spears has Seventh Avenue scouring BILLBOARD for singers to cast in its ads. "Most everyone in the apparel world has been impressed with what Tommy has pulled off," says retail analyst Faye I. Landes. "Other people are going to emulate him." In fact, Calvin Klein's cK Jeans ads go one step hipper by showcasing rock-crit pets Liz Phair and John Spencer. But isn't having your face on a billboard a great way to ruin your music cred? Nope, says Andy Hilfiger of Tommy Jeans. "It's a so much more exposure than they'd get from just releasing the record. Good point about ruining your music cred.
