Apparently many folks deleted it and then saw all the on-list replies to it, or many have misread it, judging by the misinformation being sent in to the list the form of questions. Please read this carefully, much of the info being asked in posts sent to jewel@smoe.org is in Alan's post below. By the way, if you get two or more copies of this, it's because of a special method I used to send it to the lists - list moderator Hi all, A few days ago Louise Tamblyn posted this EDA list idea: <<...what if every single EDA sent $5(or more) to HGH in a christmas card addressed to Jewel. That would be alot of money, and perhaps also the encouragment Jewel might be needing. She has given us so much, maybe we should give back. Just a thought, E-mail me or put up a message saying what you think and if you would be a part of it...>> I support this idea & your list-owner Mike tells me that many are writing in support of Louise's idea. If there is general interest in getting behind another major list project for the holidays, I think I can help everyone who'd like to participate. I had a good discussion about this idea with Shane Kilcher (Jewel's brother & HGH/Clearwater management) & of course HGH would love to have EDA support like this & we all agree that Jewel would be thrilled by such a gift! So here's a few suggestions that may help get this idea off the ground. I see 2 major areas that would need attention. They are: 1) Collection & tallying of all EDA contributions to HGH 2) Creating a LARGE Christmas card to Jewel from all the EDAs that participate & writing a message to her explaining this "giving back" idea. Then getting this card to her on Christmas. As most of you hopefully know, anyone can make a donation to HGH at their website, but since I think most see this as a great potential "list project", it would be nice to keep track of EDA contribution totals. Mike mentioned that several people have already volunteered to collect the contributions, but I think we can be directly helpful with that. Here's what Shane & I discussed a bit. We thought that maybe we could begin an HGH/EDA project together. A major current focus of HGH is the Clearwater Project. Although they are currently working at improving living conditions at two locations in Mexico & one in Bangla Desh, they want to add a fourth location, possibly in rural Alaska or one of several locations within the U.S. I thought perhaps the EDAs would like to "adopt" this next location. Does this seem like an idea that could fly on the list? I think so & I think it can easily extend past the initial idea of "Jewel's holiday gift", yet begin as that, since it's perfect timing. What we could do to facilitate the ease of contributing would be to set up a mailing address specifically for the HGH/EDA project. Then everyone who wishes to contribute can mail the contribution to HGH/EDA Project, etc & the HGH Staff could keep those contributions seperate for this project & keep a tally on current EDA totals. I can keep an ongoing list of all the names contributing & all those names could be added to Jewel's Christmas Card. We would highly suggest that ONE big card be designed as apposed to doing yet another "book of EDA messages". We'd prefer to see the EDAs designate an EDA team to create the card & write up a thoughtful message to Jewel explaining how you wanted to "give something back" to her in this manner. I'm not trying to trample anyone writing Jewel messages, but thats not the focus of this project, & I think its important to keep such a potentially huge project logistically simple. I can certainly get the list of all EDA contributer names from HGH & get them to the "EDA card design team". So in that way, everyone's name can be included on the card. I'm sure Jewel would be extremely happy to get a gift like this from the EDAs for Christmas & I can make sure she does recieve the EDA card, message & list of names personally. So....what do ya think? Please let me know if this project is indeed what The EDAs would like to pursue. As Louise said, "What if every single EDA send $5(or more) to HGH in a christmas card addressed to Jewel?". I can answer that! If that actually happened, the EDAs would be well on the way to setting up a clean water system that would dramatically improve living conditions for an entire community in thier adopted location. If the EDAs want to pursue this, I'll do whatever I can to help & we'll make it procedurally workable on our end. I'll be watching the list so no need to reply just to me. I'll be chatting with Shane & HGH staff again on Wednesday & would appreciate if a general consensus on this idea could be relayed to them by then. Is that possible? Please discuss ON THE LIST. When I see things like this, it reminds me once again, that the EDAs are amazing! Alan PS. Please visit the HGH & Clearwater websites to educate yourself more about their projects. Here it is: Jewel: Hi, everybody! I'm glad to here! AOLiveMC13: Let's start with this audience question: Question: How did you select the Christmas songs for you new album and who wrote them? Jewel: Some of the songs are original that I wrote. To pick the others, I stuck to songs that I wanted to sing like gospel music and arias. Some of them are childhood favorites. Question: When you made your new album were you happy with what you did with the album or did you think you could do better? Jewel: I was happy with Spirit, and I'm happy with the Christmas. That being said, there's still always stuff when you get done that you'd like to try. Question: What is your poetry book "A Night Without Armor" about? Is about Your life basically? Jewel: Yeah, I guess it's just about living. It's not always about my life..... I write about other people, too. Question: Hey Jewel! I am so impressed with your new Christmas album, and I was wondering what your personal favorite of the album is. One other random question...what kind of horse do you have? Jewel: I have an American Quarter horse. I think the songs I'm most proud of on the Christmas record are the gospel ones and the Latin song I wrote, called Gloria. Question: How long have you been in to music? Jewel: My parents were musicians, so I was pretty much born into it. Question: jewel i love your poetry and i am working on a book at the moment Too, do you think you will release anymore poetry books soon? Jewel: I'm coming out with a second book sometime in the new year, but it's not of poetry. It's short stories and prose. Question: your favorite backup group Jewel: The band I have now! Question: Jewel, What is your advice for those who want to sing? Jewel: People sing because they love it. I guess that would be my only advice...... make sure you do it because you love it, more than love of wanting to be famous or rich. I think that's the only thing that sustains you. Question: Jewel I was wondering if you were planning on touring anytime soon, I love seeing you live! Jewel: I just got off the road. I'm not sure when I'll tour again. If I do a movie in the new year, I won't tour. If there's no scripts I really like, I'll probably tour again. Question: Hi jewel? what is your favorite sport? Jewel: I guess bull-riding. The BPR for professional bull-riders. Question: your music and life style seems not to be linked to the net .are you a fan of internet? Jewel: I like that the internet is close to the fans without a middle-man, but for my own personal use, I don't e-mail friends or anything. Question: Jewel, how many/what songs will you be releasing from Joy? Jewel: For singles, I have no idea. I guess we'll just wait and see how it all goes. Question: With the poetry contest you have with Scholastic, are you really judging the finalist yourself or having any part in it at all? Jewel: Yeah, I do judge the finalists myself. Question: Jewel, I saw you on the CMAs...are you making a country album? I Heard at one point you were, but then I heard it was put off...what's the deal? :-) Jewel: I definitely want to do a country record. I have no idea when I'll do it. I haven't decided what I want my next record to be like. Question: how old were you when u began to write your own music? Jewel: I wrote a few songs when I was pretty little, but not many........... like between the ages of 7 & 8. At 16 I started writing hundreds of them real regularly. Question: How do you get ideas for poems and songs? Jewel: I don't think about it, really. Any idea works for a poem or a song........ just living does that. Question: Who were your role models when you were growing up? Jewel: My mom and dad, of course. Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald. Edith Piaf, The Replacements. Question: what kind of guitar do you have? Jewel: I have Taylor guitars, and a couple of Farringtons. Question: What would you be doing if you would not of *been discovered* ... did you have any other goals besides music? Jewel: I like visual art a lot. But I think I just would have sung in bars. Question: How has fame affected your songwriting? Jewel: Radio hits have affected my songwriting more than anything because before having a hit, I'd never thought about it, so I just wrote real naturally. Then when Who Will Save Your Soul became a hit, I suddenly felt a lot of pressure and became really self-conscious of my writing. Then I just decided to get over it. Now I just write what I love! Knowing that eventually I'll probably not have radio hits during different phases of my career. Question: what inspired you to write the song What's Simple is True? Jewel: I was in Germany and it was winter, and the landscape was very frozen. For some reason, I just really liked the metaphor of trying to freeze love in order to preserve it. But in doing so, sort of killin that love. Question: Would you ever like to start your own record label? Jewel: Yeah, I've thought about it. I have so many projects, it hasn't been on the top of my list, but eventually I probably will. A lot of people know I've started my own merchandise and video companies and my non-profit Higher Ground For Humanity. Which has about 8 charities that they're either starting or supporting. It's kept me really busy. AOLiveMC13: The time has really slipped by, we have time for one final question: Question: Jewel I think you are a positive role model to the young today. What advice would you give to them about growing up with the peer pressures of today? Jewel: I guess to stay as honest as you can with yourself. Even if it's only when you write in a journal, I think you have to keep in touch with yourself. AOLiveMC13: Many thanks for being with us and taking our questions, Rosie AOLiveMC13: Many thanks, Jewel. Jewel: Thank you! OnlineHost: Copyright 1999 America Online, Inc.
