Ok, I was sitting there, I just put my cd in, and forgot I had the volume all the way up because I was bumpin that new Lil Wayne junt(Tha Block is Hot), so all the sudden I heard this friggin loud "JOY TO THE WORLD!" and I screamed and fell out my chair. Man, that'll scare the mess out of anyone(I dare you to try it). Anyways, It's an awesome CD and highly recomended. I love Face of Love, because I've never heard it before. It's sooooooo good. I also like Gospel Melody, but I have to admit, the Christmas Hands was silly at the begining. Ok, really, I liked most, or, all the songs on the CD. Yeah, that's it, all of them. I also like the Gloria video(especially on full screen). What a kewel CD! Jim Broadcastin' live off tha block it's Lil Wayne! Wodie you got that Joy, yo? Than sing somethin for me! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 18:04:44 +1100 From: "Jennifer" Subject: * Re: TRL in Australia? This is not for any certain event but an explanation! Please, this list is here for a reason and her name is Jewel! Let's all remember this song!... I'm Sensitive I was thinking i might fly today Just to disprove all the things that you say It doesnt take a talent to be mean Your words can crush things that are unseen So please be careful with me, I'm sensitive And i'd like to stay that way You always tell me that it's impossible To be respected and be a girl Why's it gotta be so complicated? Why you gotta tell me i'm hated? I was thinking i might do some good If we robbed the cynics and took all their food That way what they believe will have taken place And we could give it to people who have some faith I have this theory that if were told were bad Then that's the only idea we'll ever have But maybe if we are surrounded in beauty Someday we will become what we see 'Cause anyone can start a conflict It's harder yet to disregard it I'd rather see the world from another abgle We are everyday angels Be careful with me 'cause i'd like to stay that way! Hello Rebecca and other fans, In a message you wrote : Hi Angels, I just go these tapes from the Spirit Tour, one of the the songs is "Happy Endings" does anyone know, is this an old song, or a new one? It> sounds familair, but I don't know if it is an old song or not. Thanks. Rebecca - ----------- Here's the answer : I went on a Jewel concert trip in Europe may 1999 and this story starts in Berlin back in may this year. In a wonderful venue in modern part of Berlin Jewel played with her band songs from Spirit. As always Jewel starts playing wonderful songs accoustic with her guitar, and this night she started to sing a new song written for her friends, and that is the story Happy endings. I couldn't believe the beauty of the song as it's just amazing pretty. The songs i brand new i reckon, and she hasn't played the song much for live audiences. So Rebecca, the song you listened to was played in Berlin, the 16th of may which was a great concert where Jewel had a great night for her fans by singing her songs. I am glad that you like the tapes, to be honest i am proud that a lot of fans listen to the dutch eda spirit world tour tapes that i have been compiling. It's nice to see that a lot of fans enjoy listening to it and sharing it with eachother. We would also like to thank the EDAs and friends who ventured out to meet/show us around your neck of the woods. All of your selflessness towards friends marks you as the epitomy of the concept behind what elevates this list from a being a mere discussion/fan group. We thank you again :) Sonja and I flew off to the east coast not really knowing what to expect beyond a hastily assembled intinerary and vague travel plans. We soon came to realize that we were in store for quite a wild ride....and the man driving (both literally andd figurativly) was no other tahn Dennis Harris. Dennis was kind enought to pick us up in Providence and drive us back to his home. After a quick tour of local sites of past shenanigans we were soon slumbering away in anticipation of the big day in store for us upon the morrow. Oct 23rd (Sat) Armed with a large sack of treats for the road and tapes of the LRC from my home in August we hit the open road! We made our way thru the gorgeous fall colored landscapes of New England, stopping briefly to pick up fellow EDA Alice Esteves and generally harass the workers in a local greek eatery. Of note here was the fact that the counter lady spoke very sketchy English and when she felt pressured she would try to bribe the offending person to go away by giving them pastries. A simple repeated request for Ranch Dressing became a Abbot&Costello sketch from hell when I wouldn't be properly bribed and she wouldn't cough up the dressing. It was at this point that I think the comparisons to Dennis started to surface. So once we had dodged the campus police and offended the snooty pizza place workers we headed out for the benefit concert! We met up with Amy N, Alan, "Don't call me Crashboy" Eric, Kelli(sp?), and Mike Verdal at his home. After we all got aqquainted, I played a bit of Jason Mraz from the EDA Gathering of Angels" show and Dennis has captured us all with his new digital video camera for posterity (bug squashing? Terrorists!?! Alice...really....). From there we headed out EDA caravan style to the SLAM Benefit Concert for the EDA Foundation. The show...simply put.. was fabulous. I am a great fan of local music and was looking forward to the show, but even I was unprepared for the level and range of talent. Alan was kind enough to DAT the show and I highly reccomend getting your hands on these tapes when they are made available. Acts of personal note were : Janie Superstar, Renata, Pleasurecrush, and the Flames. Most of these bands can be scoped out by adding a .com onto their name and surfing on over to their websites. After a helluva show, networking (Dennis...you work that side of the room and I'll work this side), a disastrous public speaking engagment by yours truly (a special thanks to Husky Joes!!!), suprise appearances by Leif and Dan Stark, and many rounds of "refreshments" we headed back to Mikes to crash...uh ..I mean sleep Eric. Thanks to Alice for letting Sonja have the loveseat and to Dennis for not deciding he needed both couches.... Sunday the 24th We arose and ambled off to the customary EDA breakfast the next morning. After the usual EDA hijinks (SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!) we said some goodbyes to the group and headed off to the Bershaw's homestead for small EDAF pow-wow. What followed has become in retrospect one of the highlights of this trip. After we had put aside the business at hand, Alan suprised us with an advance screening of Jewel's A Life Uncommon video. For those of you who haven't seen this gem of a video yet, I highly suggest it. This is "our" Jewel, preserved for posterity. Intimate moments, creative genius, Steve Poltz, and more. The concert footage from the LA Vogue/HGH benefit alone is worth the money you'll spend (ok we're biased because we could see ourselves in the crowd..but hey..THAT'S COOL!!). Just for the record, I have not as of yet purchased the video....but my birthday is on the 25th of this month (Thanksgiving this year...hint, hint). Alan followed up with some early footage of Cindy Lee Berryhill and assorted archived gems which were only topped by the splendid meal we enjoyed. We missed Alan and AmyJo almost as soon as we'd left. Thanks again guys! To be continued..... I know she's going to get a lot of bashings for showing skin and whatnot (God forbid..), but I think the cold parts with her lover frozen and the love scenes by the fire meshed very well, and it really did fit the theme of the song.. It'll probably be stuck to VH1'a Insomniac Theater, but that's alright.. // I liked the clip from RWTD.. I'd seen it online, but it seemed less stupid on television.. That "stubby finger" insult was HORRIBLE.. I meant, as in mean, not bad-acted :-) // I know she said on TRL that the album wasn't supposed to be big, but so many peopleI know knew nothing about it.. Atlantic did virtually NO promotion for it.. What's up with that?? // And, last, I was SO happy to hear that she'll definitely do more movies.. It was at the first of two shows Jewel did at the >Beacon >Theater in New York in March of 1997. It's one of the worst if not prob'ly >the worst Jewel concert on record. My vote for the worst has to be the May 8, 1996 show at the Urban Art bar in Houston, TX. The show was sponsored by the local "alternative" radio station. At the time, Jewel was on her first tour with a band, but she came to do this show alone. The doors opened at 6:00 PM, but Jewel didn't go on stage until 11:00. The place was packed. And by the time Jewel came on stage many of the patrons were literally falling down drunk. There was one particular drunken, heckling lady who especially aroused Jewel's ire. Jewel flipped her off once, and later interrupted a song to say, "Will the lady who keeps yapping please take her wine cooler and go somewhere else." There was general and constant chatter from some parts of the crowd throughout the entire performance. Finally, after about 1/2 an hour, Jewel declared "That's it," packed up her guitar, put on her jacket and her belt, and walked off the stage. The show was not totally devoid of interest. When Jewel sang "Pieces of You," after the line "Did she sleep with the whole town," Jewel paused and said, "No daddy, we did not." Here it is: Jewel has concocted an intriguing and at times beautifully inspired holiday album, playing it straight with a big orchestra and backing voices for the first half of the record with standards such as "Joy to the World," "Winter Wonderland," "Silent Night," as well as a lovely rendition of "Ave Maria." Things finally get sparkling in the last half where Jewel does a low-key, kid version of "Rudolph" and sings her own compositions. Her moving "Face of Love" and "Hands" are certain to become holiday standards, capable of being sung in a country, pop, gospel, or R&B vein and deserving of an audience as wide as the nation itself. The record's centerpiece, however, seems to be a six-minute-plus medley that mixes "Go Tell It on the Mountain" with the recent hit "From a Distance" and her own "Life Uncommon." Nonetheless, her stunning adaptation of "Gloria" inspired, in part, by Bach's B-Minor Mass, two tracks later is as powerful and lovely a Christmas vocal performance as you will find anywhere. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, Joy is destined to become a holiday classic. --Martin Keller excellent! cya later dudes steve ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #658 ***************************
