I only took three copies for myself, and two are already promised to two other EDAs. But most definitely look for it by you. :-) And I'll scan the pic and article and put a temporary webpage up for it for whoever wants a copy. :-) I'll send a post to the list when I put it up, so read the digests. - -Matt, The Philosopher Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 02:57:55 EDT From: DRotter154@aol.com Subject: * jewel song spotted hey all- I was watching The other sister w/ my buddies and a small clip of I'm sensitive was played. That was too good! I explained to him that I trade Jewel stuff just through email. All my friends make fun of my angelfood and whenever I get some stuff in the mail they laugh and make fun of me. I find it very amusing and funny! They think I am obsessed with jewel, but I tell them she has so much music that just the two albums do not do her justice. They think this whole angelfood and EveryDay Angel stuff is crazy and they tease me a lot, but I just laugh right back. "It's a whinnie the pooh, blustery day." Hi everyone, Just some spiritual thoughts on a rainy Sunday morning. The list sure hasn’t been boring over the last couple of months, that’s for sure. I was sitting here wondering how Jewel must feel reading about her life as viewed through the eyes and minds of others. It must be very difficult at times to be a public figure. But hey, she is a very remarkable and strong woman. She can take it. Must get it from her mom, she's pretty special too I hear. Religion is a touchy subject to be discussed anywhere. It always leads to polarizations, just the nature of religion to divide and polarize people. That’s pretty sad when you think about it, isn’t it. So what’s Jewel’s “religion”. She has none. She doesn’t belong to any one religion and she has said so repeatedly. (note: unless you count the recent Muslim conversion) The word religion attempts to define and confine within a nice neat framework the answers to all life’s mysteries and questions. I truly hope that it never succeeds my friends because it is the very search for those answers that makes us human. I prefer to use the word “Spiritual” instead of religion. I like to keep things wide open, ready for change based on new found knowledge and glimpses of wisdom. I think Jewel is similar in this way, she is seeking knowledge, wisdom, but doesn’t pretend to know all the answers. Nor has she ever diluted her human spirit, which by its very nature seeks out answers rather then simply trusting others in so called “blind faith”. Jewel is a “Spiritual” person; she even made an album called “Spirit”. How many of you would have bought it if it had been titled “Religions” . hehehe. So what are Jewels beliefs? Well, only she really knows that. I can only guess based on what she has shared through her songs and poetry. If you had to ask me what her main theme was I would probably have to say similar to that of Native America Indians. They believe that within all things there is Spirit and that there is a “Great Spirit”. What is her belief? Well she believes in the power of song and music to have real change in the lives of others. She believes enough in others to have made an effort by virtue of her music. In short she believes in all of us and herself to make a difference. What is her faith? She has faith in dreams. Faith in the fact that if you follow that dream you can and will succeed one day. Maybe your dream comes true, maybe it comes true in a new way, and unexpected way. Whichever way, all that really matters is that you have faith in yourself, just as she does. It doesn’t really matter if you succeed or fail as long as you have tried. It’s the journey, not the destination that matters my friends. I think that’s the closest she has ever come to “preaching” through her music. Believe in yourself, follow your dreams, try to be the difference that makes a difference in the world and in the lives of others. Not a bad belief system if you ask me. Too often my friends we focus so much on the messenger that we lose sight of the message. I hope that we do not do this with our Jewel. I believe that would cause her great sadness. She has given us a glimpse into her spirit and shared her hopes and dreams with us. Not to convert but to share with us her joy at searching for her own answers, in her own way. What answers has she found? Just little things like, “In the end, only kindness matters”. Or how about, “It’s nothing without Love”. And lets not forget, “My hands are small I know, but their not yours, they are my own.” Maybe it’s just me but those sound like some pretty basic, fundamental and yes, even quite profound answers. But they are nothing really new. At the core of all religions, faiths, spiritual belief systems is a central repository of wisdom we call truth. I appreciate and hope that she will continue to share with us the “simple truths” she has found on her journey through life. After all, isn’t that what friends are supposed to do? Share and help each other? Here’s a simple truth I have learned. Friends don’t enforce their beliefs, their religions and their answers on each other. We help each other to find them. Jewel if your listening, thanks once again for having the courage to share with all of us, your friends. Thanks for letting us share in the complexities and beauty of your song and poetry. Thanks for being who you are and what you are. You are such a Jewel. And most of all thanks for putting up with all of us, even if we are a real pain in the butt sometimes. We love ya, but you already know that, why else would you keep putting up with us. Hey, Billy Joel is on the radio “Keeping the Faith”. Hmmmm, wonder if he’s a Muslim too,…. Shine on Jewel, you crazy spiritual little diamond you. Your words and your thoughts sparkle brightly indeed for those who take the time to listen.
