Re: Just a thought. People who like the BSB and Britney spears like the radio versions of Jewel's songs. I know a few people who hated the album version but loved the "radio" single. So you see it's all about marketing not what we like. I guess they throw those really good unreleased stuff on there to get us to buy the singles. That's the only reason I buy them. I agree I love the album versions much better. It upsets me because with the "radio" single comes the really overdone video. The only really great Jewel videos were the WWSYS and YWMFM. People should like Jewel for Jewel. Poy was Jewel. It might have been half as "good" as spirit, but it had twice as much feeling and that's the reason the album sold over 10 million copies. The bearsville stuff also had that feeling. I think for Jewel's next album she should produce it. As they said at sessions, that conductor did most of the work on the Christmas album. I want an all Jewel album, all Jewel arrangements, production, and editing. Hey it might take her a while, but what a great album. That wasn't too bad. Jupiter got a whole new beat and everything. I think it was fine the way it was on Spirit. The video was strange, not that I didn't like it(she was gorgeous!), but it didn't seem like her type of thing. I am getting to like the new version on Jupiter, but I still like the old one better. I haven't heard the new version of Life Uncommon and What's Simple is True or anything(not a big fan of singles, but mabye I should be), but I really don't mind the changes too much. It's her music and she can do what she wants with it. If she dosen't like how she sang something, she can change it. I will always like her music though, unless she just goes all out wierdo on us, but I'll still support her! Ok, I'm getting off the subject, so, yes, I don't really mind the changes, I'l just listen to the versions I like. Oh yeah, she sure does have lots of singles off of Spirit, like Hands, Down So Long, Jupiter, Life Uncommon, and What's Simple is True. Also, Innocense Maintained in the B&B cd. That's a bunch, about half the songs on Spirit. Man, that's a lot. Ok, I'm done now, bye. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 00:01:53 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: * Re: changing of songs to fit the radio hi i think that there are certain circumstances that require songs to be re-recorded. > Excellent point. I agree. Why must Jewel bastardize and "popify" what are > otherwise decent songs. i think to call it BASTARDIZING is going way too far. the single version of Jupiter WAS better than the album version. it fitted the style of the song much better. the song was not supposed to be serious.. but more playful.. listen to the lyrics.. it was too slow on spirit. i think she changed it because she felt the new version was better and she was bored of performing the old one. with You Were Meant For Me she changed it because she hated the vocals on the album version. she thought she sounded awful and i think the single version is better personally. on foolish games i do agree the album version is better, but there's no way it could have been released to the radio and been successful. also - that was re-recorded to appear on a soundtrack. it was essentially released as a single from the soundtrack of batman and robin (as well as pieces of you) so it would make sense to have a different version on the soundtrack so that people dont' just go buy the original cd. from the movie producers point of view anyway. that was an EXTREMELY commerical movie.. it's expected. i also think jewel just generally hated her vocals on the first album and wanted them redone. what's simple is true is similar. jewel is the only thing that's going to sell the ride with the devil soundtrack (unless the score is so amazing that it sells like the titanic soundtrack did) so therefore the record company would want a different version. most people who are going to buy a soundtrack based purely on a jewel song are already going to have spirit so it's almost pointless to have the title song from a movie the exact same version as that which appears on the singers cd itself. i also agree that WSIT could do with some improvement from the album. steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 23:09:34 -0700 From: Michelle Novelli Subject: *An olive branch... After reading a ton of responses to my question about whether or not we should be wondering about Jewel's "religion," I think I should clarify what I was trying to say. A lot of people wrote that there's a difference between gossip and questions about her religion. I think that beyond differing subject matter, the subject of Jewel's religion is possibly the most damaging kind of "gossip," in that it's bascially total speculation. A few people could remember tiny clips from shows and old tapes where Jewel briefly referred to God or religion, but for the most part, it was all really vague. I think the ambiguity on her part is intentional. I agree with the guy who wrote something like, "While we're all her fans, no one knows the absolute truth about anything in Jewel's personal life." And that's how it should be. Her words and music speak for themselves. Like most great art, the meaning of her work is open to interpretation. And that is a beautiful thing. If we didn't have to put a label on Jewel, the various people who've been saying stuff like the girl who wrote Jewel's music would mean more to her if she knew Jewel was a Christian, or the guy that was "just short of outraged" about Jewel's recent apparent conversion to Christianity, the various people who contend that she's not religious but spiritual, (I tend to like that one myself...), etc, etc... would all be content with their interpretation. I don't think Jewel intended that her lyrics or her poetry should mean the same thing to everyone. It would be wonderful if we could all respect our differences... keeping in mind the one thing we all have in common. SO, as the person who inadvertantly stirred up all these heated words about religion & our "right to know," I apologize to anyone who was offended or upset. Some people said stuff like all I wanted to read about was Jewel's music... not true. I just think that if we're all here because we admire Jewel as an artist and a person, we should give her a little respect. And while we're at it, let's give ourselves and each other a little respect, too. It would be rather boring if she performs the song over and over again and not find new meaning to it. A way of doing so is to jazz the song up a bit like YWMFM and Jupiter. I think they are good renditions to the original. It's like designing a car really. The old model is reliable and sturdy. Revisions of that model only make the car better. And that is what i think Jewel is doing. She's experimenting with her songs. That's all good and i think she should keep that up. I had actually planned on asking about it before this came up. So now i've missed the whole discussion and no one is going to read my post :( Hehe, but i'll write it anyway. This isn't about whether we should ask about jewel's religion or not, that goes without saying. This is just my opinion about her religion. Ok, first off, i will tell you who this is coming from. I am a Christian, saved by grace, so my opinion may be biased :) I don't think Jewel conforms to any certain religion. She seems to me like a curious 20 something that is out there trying to find meaning in different things. By listening to her music, you can tell she's gone through different phases. You can catch a glimpse of many different things: Humanistic views, atheistic views, disdain for organized religion, sarcasm towards religion, some judeo-christian influenced views. Now, her most recent music seems to lean towards a monotheistic type. I wouldn't say she is Christian, unless she says she is christian, which to my knowledge she has never done. I also think that is she is a christian, and were asked, then she would say. Its not something that is shameful, so why would she keep it secret. its something to be proud of. I would love it if Jewel was a christian, i could then relate to her music even better. But i have been a big fan of jewel for years even though i suspect she isn't. So, it really doesn't matter (i don't mean that it doesn't matter...at all, i just mean that it doesn't affect whether i am a fan or not) , but its something that would be nice to know. I also think that to go only by her music and lyrics isn't a smart thing. So many things can be read into ambiguous lyrics. Its like when you read a commentary on some classical piece of literature (metamorphosis for instance) you often times wonder if the author ever intended for these themes to be in his writing that all of these "experts" derive from it. Many lines like "but to be forgiven we must first believe in sin" now naturally i see that and thing, "yes, to be saved you must realize that you fall short of perfection" but from past jewel lyrics, i think she might be making a cynical remark about Christianity. Saying that it focuses on the bad. And "God kills children with our very own hands" someone could say that is a statement against God, or you could say its a statement against abortion, or many many other things. there are so many things that can be read into lyrics. I think everyone has there personal interpretations. Thats why shows like storytellers are great, it sometimes lets you know what the artist means. Ok, im just going to end here abruptly...once i get going its hard to stop, and i doubt many people read this far, so im going to quit :) Kevin <>< the angel who loves religious debates, though he has little time for them these days :) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #619 ***************************
