I really fellt in love with the new version. It has so much power and great singers with Jewel be the singer that really inspires the song in so many ways that i only can tell everyone : she is the talent we all eda's should be proud of . Her new versions of songs are just amazing, as you really get into the song. Hands is a wonderful example of Jewel's beautiful talents. I couldn't dream this song to turn out so lovely. Of course the A life uncommon single is very beautiful as well. I think her new record will be a pleasure to listen to, it's for us dutch jewelfans only 2 weeks away from now. Wow the way she introduced A life uncommon was so wonderful. She tells the audience that she donates the proceedings of the cd to her higher ground for humanity organization Clear water..Wow that is really nice as Jewel cares for her enviroment. Stop the Profanity Kid Rock and Korn lead the F-word troop on Woodstock 99's turgid "red" disc; "blue" acts like Dave Matthews provide little relief. by Chris Willman Which original Woodstock 1969 act had the biggest impact? Was it Jimi Hendrix? Janis? Nope--it'd have to be Country Joe McDonald, whose "Fish Cheer" ("Give me an F...") helped introduce a once-verboten four-letter word into the rock lexicon. At least, that's the iumpression left by Woodstock 99, a two-CD souvenir of the 30th-anniversary gathering. There's one amazingly profane stretch in which Buckcherry, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Sevendust, and DMX offer a nearly unbroken string of tunes where the F-word figures as either a cameo or the main linguistic attraction. Maybe it's just as well organizers didn't invite the '69 alumni back; I'm not sure how Joan Baez would've worked "motherf---er" into "Sweet Sir Galahad." That semantic single-mindedness isn't a hallmark on both CDs. Epic Records has helpfully divvied 32 acts up by genre, seperating "extreme" rock-rap and neo-metal acts onto a seperate disc. That means there's one CD for anyone who has a decal of a peeing Calvin on the back of their Mustang, and another for everybody else. The "red" disc, featuring the likes of Creed, Godsmack, and Megadeth, is a crunchingly immediate kiddie call to arms. The "blue" disc, wherein Jewel, Jamiroquai, Dave Matthews, and other more mature acts get their due, is more musical and more irrelevant. Taken together as a color coded yin and yang, the two CDs--alternately mean and mild--do effectively summarize the state of rock at the end of the century. For better or Durst. We'll likely look back on this Woodstock nation as a nation of boneheads, of course. So you can't blame this commemorative edition for any small attempts at post-riot image rehab. The Chili Peppers cover Hendrix's "Fire" following an announcer's warning to avoid the burning towers--emphasizing that references from the stage were reactive, not inflammatory. Don't bother looking for Limp Bizkit's "Break Stuff," oft cited as a crystallizing (Kristallnacht?) melee moment. Instead, they contribute "Show Me What You Got," full of friendly shout-outs to their favorite homeys, interrupted by commands to "Get the f--- up!" Anyone hearing the Bizkit here will realize they're cuddly and harmless and would surely return every broken plank personally to promoter Michael Lang if they could. Much of the red set is like-mindedly cartoonish, so you might feel churlish bringing up the climate of sexual assault. But it may be fair to wonder if rock as agressive and resolutely unsexy as much of this is fosters an atmosphere in which sex is desensualitized to the point of contact sport. ("There's no sex in your violence," sing one of the more effetely Aggro red bands, Bush--trite, but true.) Then again, such weighty considerations may fall aside in light of the easy laughs to be had from turgid penny dreadfuls like Korn's "Blind," or Sevendust's hilariously stupid "Bitch," in which so much energy is expended exhorting the crowd into an effin' frenzy, the song becomes an afterthought. The Offspring's "The Kids Aren't Alright" provides just about the only joy amid the red disc, so you hope for tonic from its mellower counterpart. But most of these acts are past their prime: It feels like The Best of Woodstock 96. Brian Setzer compelling mud-swinging is a change of pace, and God bless Sheryl and Alanis for ignoring the catcalls and showing 'em their hits. But the galvanizing moments we still secretly hope for from our Woodstocks are nowhere in earshot. Though it's tempting to--per Country Joe's ancient instruction--"give it an F!," all this millenial mediocrity ony merits an unprofane... It was fun! I am glad that I went despite the fact that Jewel only sang 3 songs. But then she talked a little to us about HGH so that was nice :-) After the whole Sessions experience, I learned that I should never have certain expectations and just enjoy it for what it is. So, I guess I really did gain something from going to Sessions.... and much more valuable than an autograph :-) The other bands were a lot of fun too. They each sang about 3 or 4 songs too so dont think Jewel got jipped or anything. It was just a different type of concert, and the reason for this concert was for something wonderful. I mean why buy the album AND the single if they're the same >song, but why does Jewel have to remake her songs to be played on the >radio... Personally I think Spirit's version of Jupiter may have done better Excellent point. I agree. Why must Jewel bastardize and "popify" what are otherwise decent songs. The single versions of Jupiter, You Were Meant For Me, and most egregiously, Foolish Games, are abundantly weaker than the original album versions. Why Jewel feels she has to take her songs and change them to conform to what may or may not be a hit single is beyond me. I definitely could do without it. I think a lot of people would have better opinions of Jewel's music if they, say, got to hear the album version of Foolish Games, rather than the sappy radio version. I am glad that the EDA I quoted above feels the same way I do, Why does Jewel have to remake her songs to be played on the radio? Other artists don't do it, and if they do it's a rare thing with maybe one song, she's done it at least three times already now. Am curious as to what others think of this. And I am curious as to what the new version of "What's Simple is True" will sound like. That one might be an improvement because I find it hard to believe it could be any worse than it is on Spirit. But only time shall tell. Hopefully others agree that, in general, the songs are stronger on the albums and her changing them to suit "radio format" is not exactly a good thing. What do you all think? Later, Sean Hooks "Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes." - -Henry David Thoreau An excellent quote from Mister Thoreau. I think Jewel should stop trying to dress up her songs and make up herself and just stick to her roots. That's just my opinion. Feel free to disagree or agree. And as always, all of you, be well. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #617 ***************************
