[Ian Delfin Subject: * Talent Show! Hi all! Yes, it was I who told you guys almost 2 years ago about the nasty song stealer girl. Here's a recap. So, this chick shows up at my school's talent show and taking the stage with her short sandy blond hair, blouse and high heels, she takes out her guitar that she named (guess what??) "Big Blue". Yes, thats right. She just didn't want to steal Jewel's songs. She wanted everything. It was completely pathetic. She opens up by saying something to the affect of "I just wrote this song on a whim last night, I guess it jsut came to me it is called Carnivore, hehe, actually, it's called never trust your pink fleshy heart to a carnivore" (everyone laughs) "Just some good solid advice my Granny, never gave me, hehe" As many of you EDA's know, this is EXACTLY how Jewel has been heard to introduce the song a few times, aside from the whole "just wrote it last night" part. Well, I nearly fell off my seat. Anyhow, she goes on to sing this (admittedly amazing) acoustic version of carnivore on her "Big Blue" guitar with a bad looking paint job. I nearly died, I swear to god. Anyhow, she went on to win FIRST PLACE at the talent show, her prize was a $500.00 scholarship!!! Now, I couldn't let her get away with this so I went straight to the priciple and busted her ass. Hehe! Not only did she have the prize taken away but she got a suspension! AND, she decided to just leave the school, I guess she was ashamed, well I would be too! The WHOLE school was talking about how amazing her performace was and what a great song writer she was and how cute she was blah blah blah. It was great watching her get her just desserts. I hope that doesn't sound horrifically mean, but it was! You guys should have seen it, she made herself LOOK just like Jewel. I think she thought she could get away with it because Carnivore is unreleased material, and here in Canada Jewel wasn't hugely popular at that time. At least not in high schools...... So yeah, there is the long-time awaited conclusion to the tale of the song stealer! October 2nd I'm going to be getting onto a plane and moving from Connecticut to Denton, Texas. This is a completely blind dive for me--I've never been to the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, even just to visit. Heck, I've never been to Texas, period, not even on a layover. I've never done anything like this in my life, me usually being very cautious and conservative when it comes to major life choices. But, ah, love makes you do things you wouldn't normally do and I'll be very happy to be reunited with my honey. N-E-way .. my point? Oh yeah. If any of you Texas residents, past or present, have any advice for a scared lil' yankee, I'd appreciate it. Anything and everything, from where are cool places to eat and drink to where's the best place to buy groceries; where are the most happenin' bars to the best laundromats. Help me out so I don't look completely clueless! Thanks in advance. Hi, That same thing was pointed out in a Shawn Colvin newsgroup... They were accusing Jewel of stealing Shawn's music. I don't remember the first time I ever heard "Sunny Came Home"... but I heard an older live performance of DSL from a few years ago, and Jewel was doing the same guitar part. I highly doubt she copied anyone. To Heather and any other list members who have defective JMerch items, including those purchased at the Jewel concerts this summer, below is what I posted on this issue in early August. Mike :-) ************ 8/3/99 Hi everyone :-) I just got off the phone with Mike at JMerch. (for new folks, that is the official Jewel Store on www.jeweljk.com) I called him to relate to him the number of Instant Messages and emails I've recently received either personally or through the list which were about defective merchandise either purchased online from JMerch or at a Jewel concert. Most were about the Spirit Tour book, which is a problem they know about. (It seems there have been many defective ones, including the one I received a few days ago...some "environmentally safe glues" just ain't doing the trick) Basically, he said that if you purchased something defective either through them online, mail order, or official Jewel merchandise at a Jewel concert, to please call them at their toll free number 877-295-3935 and they will make ammends (or you can email them at customerservice@jeweljk.com). To visit the Jewel Store online, head to http://www.jeweljk.com and once you navigate the "browser choice" page, click on "Window". I'm sure a lot of songs sound alike but that doesn't mean that they intentially coped it. I mean there are only so many sounds a guitar can make and sooner or later there is going to be some similar sounding music. A whole key DOES make a difference, a different rythm all of it. I mean there is a part in "jupiter" that kind of sounds like "My Heart Will Go On" I think we make too much out of "copying" I mean I could play the exact same song chords and all and it could sound completely different. You can only copyright the recording of it and the lyrics. Not the notes!!! I could take the exact notes (chords) from DSL and play a completely different sounding song. Timing is everything.... So let's not be so hard on those just playing and writing!! People are inspired by other people's music it what drives musicians. And a lot of musicians change it that change is what makes it their own. It shows she is still singing from Jan. to Sept. and Lovitz starts screamin at her! He calls the Alaskan airlines and when they put him on hold its Jewel singing WWSYS again. In response to this email that keeps coming up now and then, who cares if it sounds like it, every single song ever writen has had influence from something else somewhere down the road. The songs kicks butt right? Some people make it sound like their always out to get Jewel one way or another. Goddness. I could say the same thing about almost every country song out there, no offense to country fans! Jewel's pretty original, so what if she was influenced by Tom Petty, she looks up to alot of Rock Legends, don't we all. I think it's a great compliment to make original music that has a touch from the past. P.S. It's been mentioned before! ~Bflykisses Ok, now I don't know if this has been mentioned before. In case some of you were wondering...Jewel uses medium guage d'addario EJ16 phosphor bronze guitar strings... issue no. 27*****an article about lilith fair and a nice pic of jewel on page 27. Heres what amy ray of the Indigo girls said about jewel on her interview on that issue of GWA... GWA:what did you learn on lilith last year? RAY:women tend to judge other women in many of the ways that maybe men judge women. You might see a glamorous woman star and feel she's not as good because she's glamorous.I learned that I might judge other people based on a media perception or an Image that has nothing to do with what their music acctually sounds like. GWA: I can only guess who you're talking about... RAY:[laughs] well there are so many... GWA: anyone in particular? RAY: No, I can't...well I definitely wasn't down on Jewel or anything, but here's someone I was completely unfamilliar with. And I was blown away by her talent, her approach, her versatility, her spontaneity. I probably didn't pay attention to her before because of the image and the media. well, thats definitely high praises coming from artists as distinguished as the Indigo girls, dont you think? thats all for now edas! love you all! btw, Im still bouncing all around the place cause I finally got some more angel food!
