Hey there fellow EDAs, Tonight I think I must've done the stupidist thing... I accidently taped over two Jewel songs that another kind US EDA had copied for me :o( I am desperate to get it re-taped!!!!!!. The songs were V-12 Cadillac (from MOM II CD) and Foolish Games (from the crossroads CD). I don't have a great deal to offer, but I do have Jewel's interviews that she did on Aussie radio when she was here earlier this year. If an Aussie EDA could possibbly fulfill this need that would be great, if not the kindness of any EDA would be very much appreciated!!!!! Thanking you!!!!!! Pressing the limits of the Session security staff, what became known as the Harris Gallery bantered with Jewel whenever breaks allowed. Early on Jewel, who was obviously distressed from having a group of crazed fans behind her, pretended to ignore their comments. Finally it became overwhelming. She turned away from the Harris Haven of Laughter saying, "You're retarded!" The rowdy section, who now refers to themselves as the "Harris Gallery" was stunned for a quick second but then retorted, "You've inspired us to be retarded." Jewel, shaking her head in pity, just decided to ignore their remark. As punishment to the troublemakers, Jewel forced whole audience to stay late after the Christmas program taping to listen to four solo acoustical numbers. It was true three years ago, as true as it is today … goddamn Harris! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 11:26:11 EDT From: CopperTex@aol.com Subject: * Sessions!!! Wow!!! This was the most incredible thing i have ever seen! I waited outside for 3 and a half hours just to get good seats and it was well worth it....I was in the front of the line and got about 7 feet from the microphone and could not believe I would be able to see Jewel so close and at eye level. I met a bunch of awesome EDA's and I'm horrible with name's...I don't think I can remember any of you guy's names! :) Well, we talked for the hours while we waited, and Alan came up for a bit so I chatted with him for about 5 minutes. Anyways...it was quite a unique experience, I must say...there was a choir of 5 women and 3 men, and a bunch of instruments. She played a bunch of Christmas music like Joy To The World, etc...most of the stuff that will be on the Christmas album. And Nedra was there and sang Rudolph and the Face of Love and one other if I'm not mistaken. At the end she did four acoustic songs...WWSYS, YWMFM, Sometimes It Be That Way (awesome!!!), and Grey Matter. All the Christmas music sounds great! It's all arranged really good and even though they are classic songs, they each have their own new, unique sound to them. She had to play Life Uncommon 3 times because of feedback problems or something like that..and I was in heaven (i love that song!) and the newer version sounds great..as well as the newer version of Hands. A Bunch of other cool stuff happened which I'm sure more people will talk about ..(such as pieces of the fingernails flying inches from my face). I had such a great time..makes me wish Jewel would play in front of audiences of 300 more often! Love you guys!!! I've utterly spoiled myself for any other Jewel concert I should ever go to again in my life. The intimate setting of Sessions could not be beat (alright, the chairs could have been a little more comfy but why quibble over details?). Since I was one of the first ones to arrive, I was in the front row, almost right across from Jewel, roughly eight feet away from her. /Eight feet/! Not eight rows, not eight yards, not eighty feet. It was surreal, I must say. I mean, you see this person on TV, as a speck on the stage, in print ads, thoughts reduced to type on a page, etc. And then you see her up close and it's like .. my God, this is a real person. She has bad hair days, she goes pee, she gets cranky, she gets sad, she laughs, she cries .. you get the idea. And then you find yourself putting yourself into her shoes: what must it have been like to go from being one of the 'normal, faceless masses' to someone who's adored by millions, someone who people feel entitled to scruntinize and judge you're every move, you're every word, you're every outfit. But, I ramble. It was an excellent, excellent show. Oh, did I mention it was excellent? I have decided that I want her to always perform with a choir and classical instruments. I wish she'd record as she does when she sings live. It seems like she really holds herself back on her albums. It was so nice to just see her tear loose and display all her vocal range and musical influences. Anyway, I didn't write down the setlist but I'm sure someone else will post that. Definately look for this show on PBS when it airs around Christmas time. Have a blank VHS tape and your VCR ready .. it's something you should not miss! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 18:04:52 +0200 From: "michiel - Jewelfan- van gorkum" Subject: * autographed tourbooks on www.jeweljk.com hello jewelfans, On Jewel's official site you can order autographed jewel tourbooks of her spirit tour. it only cost $ 45 if you haven't got a signed book than you can order it there. http://www.jeweljk.com. Bye, Michiel a dutch eda who envies you all seeing Jewel in the NYC Session special for X-mas...i wished i could hear Jewel sing those songs. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 10:33:19 -0600 (MDT) From: Laurel Crump Subject: * Obnoxious Fans?/Harris Gallery I just am kinda concerned right now. I may have just read the message wrong or interpreted it wrong or somerthing, but How can we expect Jewel to continue inviting fans to preformances like this if we are distracting and immature during her shows? I mean, I am sure she needs to concentrate, and MOST OF ALL, feel RESPECTED...not just loved, ya know? Like a person up there, not just an object to be yelled at. It would feel crummy, to me. Don't get me wrong, I am sure she loves being appreciated, and recieving appreciation in words....but have some repsect, too.... Sorry to be so bitter! But last night, was a real disappointment. Maybe because I was at Storytellers and I expected it to be like the same thing. She didnt talk to us at all and as soon as the last song was done she walked off the stage with her mom and right into a limo and drove off. Of course they led all of us out of a different exit so we didnt even see her get into the limo. They seated ALL the EDA's (except three that I know of) behind the stage. Now on the stage was a full choir and orchestra. So, most of us couldnt even see the back of Jewels head, even if we dared to stand up! Actually there wasnt enough seats for everyone so they made a lot of the EDA's stand the whole time!! So noone got any autographs or pictures :-( A few grabbed the setlists from the orchestra. I got lucky to get Jewels setlist because I snuck back to where the crew was during the first song! So there I sat in front of a monitor with a crew. THe best seat in the house :-) Me and Amy (who also came back as they were changing tapes) got to see everything close up, including putting the makeup on her. So that was cool. What wasnt cool though was when I first got up and came back there, this blonde seating director lady totally cursed me out!!!! Using every other word FU#@%!!! She said I was lucky she wasnt throwing me the F-word out of there and that I was costing them thousands of dollars!!! She made Jewel re-sing that first song "Joy to the world" just because I got up while they were taping it the first time(he he)!! The performance was beautiful. But just so you all know; when this is on tv in December, the ONLY EDAs you'll see in the audience is Amy Phillips (hi Amy) I saw a glimpse of Erics face (crashboy) real quick but thats it. It is cool to already know this though, cause from watching the TV screen, I saw everything the cameras were shooting. Nedra looked great BTW too. So there I was with my white platform shoes (hoping Jewel would remember them from Storytellers), an 8 x 10 photo of her with a marker (hoping to get her autograph - even though I got one at Storytellers), and I had a poem that I written about her called "Angel of Song" along with a short letter in a cute little Christmas gift bag for her. None of these expectations came through for me so I am very disappointed :-( Walking ALL OVER NY afterwards in my freakin platform shoes with some EDAs was SOME experience!! We tried to meet everyone at a bar and went through hell trying to find a subway that was actually running!!!! By 3:00 am, my feet were in such pain they went numb!!! We had a good time at the bar though. But I missed the 6 AM train by about 3 hours by oversleeping!!! So got to work, yeah, pretty late!!!! Thats my story. See ya at the beach cleanup this Saturday. A friend got me in front row, so I was pretty close to this when it happened.nearing the end of the show a few avid fans, when she graced thier presence with her angelic touch, tried to pull her into the crowd. I know she was distressed by it as she often is by the excited screams and possessive behaviors. I just want to say, if you are fortunate enough to be so graced, let the touch be light, for the forceful drawing shall only make her withdraw from the EDA's where discussion and poetic exchange is concerned. she's a introvert in the first place. be not so brutal please. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 19:37:01 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: * Jewel at the London Film Festival This is from Empire Magazine's web site at http://www.empireonline.co.uk/news/news.asp?1614 - --------------------- Name dropping in London 15/09/1999 Film fans will be spoilt for choice at the stars who are turning up for the 43rd London Film Festival, which this year runs from 3 - 18 November. WOW! That pretty much sums up my experience at Sessions last night. Jewel was in top form and from the sound of it, the Christmas album will surely not disappoint. I didn't have a chance to pick up a copy of the setlist but I saw a bunch of people carrying copies of it around so I'm sure someone will post it. Basically it was all of the songs from the Christmas album as well as solo acoustic versions of WWSYS, YWMFM, SIBTW, and Grey Matter. She seemed very relaxed and was talking and joking in between takes. Some songs seemed to take a few more takes than others-Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Life Uncommon-but that was just fine with me. Overall, the show should be great. If anyone finds out the exact date, could you please let me know? I know this review is somewhat cursory, so much so I wouldn't even call it a review, but I'm still a little giddy from last night. Maybe when I calm down a little bit, I'll be able to say more about it. Take care! For everyone who would like to join us in cleaning our adopted beach this Saturday in South Amboy, NJ, the directions are below. Please plan to arrive around 10, as we will be going over instructions; passing out gloves, garbage bags, and data cards; and signing the liabability waiver (this is required per the NJ Adopt-A-Beach program rules). We'll start the cleaning at 10:30. We had a great time at the spring cleanup and I have no doubt this one will be just as much, if not more, fun! Afterwards, we will go out to lunch (probably Denny's) and then ?? something fun. If you're coming from far away, I can help you make arrangements to stay locally with an EDA. Here is the list of participants so far: Eric Montas, Sue & Jeff Harrison, Alice Estevez, Dennis Harris, Iris, Michelle, Abel Rosario, Johnny Wilson, Dan Stark (maybe), Leif (maybe), Rob & Tammy Campbell (maybe). If you're not on this list but planning to attend, please contact me at w1ggy2@aol.com. FLOYD: As for this obnoxious hurricane that threatens to mess up our day, we will play it by ear. If it's raining a little, we'll still have the cleanup Saturday, but if it's torrential rains and/or very high winds, we'll have to put it off - either until the next day (Sunday) or the following week. If everyone who is coming could send me their phone number, that would be helpful. Let's think positive and assume the 'cane will have passed by already or, even better, bypassed us altogether!
