Think about it..Jupiter is the first single ever to be released to North America..we don't get the special lengthy CD's. We just get the ordinary 13 or 14 track ones. Now, don't think I am complaining about it. I sure am not. I just wanted to say that to all of you non-american EDA's, I wish there were something I could do :( Jenn List Moderator Note: To avoid replies coming in, "Jupiter" is not the first Jewel single to be released to North America. Just to add a couple of things. She read a poem out of her book to end the show. The poem was called God Exists quietly which she said was her favorite poem. During one of the lines "as my life took flight and lit out to travel the world" there were sparks up near the stage and some sort of speaker apparently overheated and caught fire. She stopped for a moment as the sparks flew and when the crowd settled down she finished the poem. When she shook hands at the center of the stage a fan pulled a little hard and she almost fell into the crowd. After she left the stage a fan jumped up and stole something off her microphone. Trace her guitar tech, who by the way is Melissa Etheridges guitar tech as well( another comparison I guess), got knocked down by the guy but got the pics back anyways. Then he gave them out to a few people who were standing around the stage. Another cool part of the evening was that Nedra came out just before the show began and took her seat in about the tenth row and watched the show with the rest of the crowd. Great show and Jewel is like a young Melissa as someone pointed out last week. She has learned alot about performing and her concert was just great last night. If you look at ticket sales, at a lot of her shows the place was > only > half-sold out or around that.. I don't think Jewel's an arena artist anyway.. > > She should be playing smaller venues.. Alright, that's just my opinion.. I agree with this in a way. Although i think you're shortchanging jewel by saying the venues were only half full! I went to 2 concerts and the venues were almost full.. there was just the occasional spare seat. there were some sold out concerts (I believe the one at Tampa was sold out - i didn't go to that one but that's what I saw from looking at ticketmaster a week or so ago) but not that many from what i can gather. jewel's tour is #36 on the top 40 tours at the moment. I don't necessarily agree that Jewel shouldn't play live arena crowds. she built this tour (setlist wise) to accomodate that with big songs like Barcelona, Life Uncommon and the last 20 minutes of the show to fit that kind of a setting.. and people definitely enjoyed it. I think the reason that Jewel's tour didn't sell out like it should have is because Jewel isn't the "big thing" right now. A couple of years ago she was a really big deal.. now it's died down because the "teeny bopper, bubble-gum pop britney spears thing" is in. and that's fine. all music is a cycle - Jewel has said that herself. as long as she can keep "almost" filling these big arenas and keep selling a decent amount of albums when she's not the big thing means that she will be staying around for a while. i mean if you compare Spirit and Pieces of You, obviously Pieces of You was a bigger success. it stayed on the charts for two years. sold over 10 million albums. Spirit has sold around 4 million in a little under a year - but has basically dropped off the charts now. 4 million is very reasonable. it's great. frankly, she's doing better than a lot of people in her field. her album did way better than Alanis' second try - which dropped off the charts while jewel was still in the top 10. i will always love jewel and her music will always be insprirational to me... but the "masses" are very fickle. probably in a couple of years jewel will release a rock CD and grab everyone's attention again - maybe she'll sell 10 million albums again and sell out 15 000 seat arenas in 20 minutes.... and then the next year maybe she'll only sell 2 million albums because people become more interested in someone who's motto is "hit me baby one more time" (personally i think this is a GREAT message for the kids - don't you?) anyways - it doesn't matter what the masses think really. i feel bad about jewel not selling out arenas because i think that if everybody who loved Britney Spears went to a Jewel concert they'd see real talent. I took a friend of mine who loves Korn and Limp Bizkit to the Jewel concert in Toronto and she absolutely loved it - one of the best concerts she'd seen. she said to me that she didn't think that jewel was THAT phenomenal.. and now she knows. i think it's those little cases - where she touches people in that special way that make her a success.. and not her position on the charts. steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 12:13:10 -0400 (EDT) From: folkrockgirl98@alloymail.com Subject: * Angel food I'm a new EDA /traderwondering if some one could tell me how I can get A copy of DC show 7/30/99 I went to this show so I want a copy. Hi everyone!! I just got back from my weekend in Tampa, and i went to the concert Friday (or course)! It was so great. I don't think anyone posted a setlist yet, but as soon as a listen to my recording of the show all the way thru, I'll post a setlist. Yes, I RECORDED the Concert! A $20 tape recorder, and the quality ain't too shabby. Grey Matter was cut in half, I'm missing about 30 seconds of it, and the last song she sang, (Chime bells) got cut off right after "summers eve" before she started yodeling fast, but if you never heard the song before, you wouldn't know anything was missing. I should'nt of started recording when the lights went off... but I didn't want to miss a few seconds of the beginning of a song... but if I pressed record 30 seconds later, I'd have a full recording. ANYWAYS!!! Here's my review thing!!! I left Palm Coast at 2:00 to go to Tampa, and we got to my brother's friends apartment at about 4:45. We hung out for a bit, went for a beer run for that night, and stuff. So anyways, at about 7:00 me and my brother left for the Performing Arts Center, and we still had an extra ticket because his other friend cou;dnt get off work intime to go to the show. So We saw a guy holding a sign that said "I need tickets" So I walked up to him and said "I have one extra ticket if you want it..." But he said he needed more than one... and I realized he was a scalper. But he said he'd give me $15 for it, and I said "how about $30?" (it was originally $40). But he couldnt agree to that. So then he asked me where my seats were, I said "Mez3, Row c" And then he told me he'll take MY THREE tickets, and give me two tickets in 5TH ROW CENTER!!!! He asked that we pay another $30 in addition, I know that's illegal for him to make a profit, but We saw it as an even trade... We were already gonna be out $20 each for the other ticket if we couldn't sell it, so what was $15 more? So we got out seats in 5th row center. The seats were awesome, I had a great view. After Steve's set, (he was great... I yelled "I LOVE YOU STEVE" to him when he got on stage... but I don't know if he heard me, he was kinda talking at the same time. So anyways, after his set, I snapped two pictures of him as he was leaving the stage, and the girl sitting 2 seats to the right of me, asked me if I'd be taking alot of pictures. I said yes, if I can get away w/ it, because security was standing right there. She asked me if I could send her copies when I get them developed, and I said okay. So when jewel came on, I took like one or two pictures (they're probabaly good shots too), and then the security guy came up to me and told me to stop. So I couldn't take anymore pictures. I'm kind of disapointed... because I had 2 rolls of film, and I could have gotten alot of great shots where i was. Jewel sand a new songs, she only had the chorus written, so she made up the verses as she went along... the chorus went something along the lines of "everyone needs to feel loved". It was really good. "Does Anybody Believe in Love" was beautiful too... and OH!!!! Before i forget.... NEDRA sat two rows behind me!!! I saw her in front of the stage w/ some guy and they were being led to the 7th row!! The girl who asked me for the pictures said "They couldn't get better seats for Jewel's MOM???" (me and my brother were thinking the same thing). I thought that was funny... I wanted to say hi to Nedra.. probably would have if she was either right next to me, or right behind me... but if she was, I'd be too embarrassed to let her see that I was recording. Hmm... did I forget anything? I think this was long enough.... and I'm totally stoked that I got 5th row center... and that I was less than 10 feet away from Nedra....she's really lovely... anyways, peace, kelly ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 14:06:01 -0400 From: "Shannon Mackie" Subject: * hello, i'm back This is jewel9283 and first off, i'm sorry.
