As I am catching up on my mail, I notice many of you who just saw Jewel in concert got excellent seats. I've seen tons of posts from people who've been in the first ten rows. I was among the first in line to get my tickets and I got a row in the forties. Just curious on how you all get good seats. - -Brandy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 01:06:59 EDT From: Mika911@aol.com Subject: * VH1 & Contest Does anyone know which shows and when VH1 will or won't have on Jewel. I'm talking about any previous shows they did with Jewel and would be replaying this month since Jewel is the August Artist of the Month! I'd love to catch them. Also, if an EDA wins the Alloy Online Contest to meet Jewel, be sure to let the list know about it! :-) Mika ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 23:06:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Elana Subject: * My Toronto concert review... =) Hi everyone, It's me again, with my review for the Toronto concert!!! Sorry it's really late!!! =) I didn't get my Darien Lake review back through the list which is kinda weird, but I assume you all got it!!! =) I had the extra ticket, but I found someone from the list that wanted it, it was nice to meet another EDA!!! I brought some Alphagetti for the food drive that was really important, but there wasn't really anything else in the bins when I got there!!! =( I watched Rusted Root again and the hour went quicker this time!!! Then I went to buy a tour book and a t-shirt but they didn't have the black t-shirt I wanted so I only got a tour book!!! =( Then we sat down again to watch Steve Potlz, he came out and he was wearing the same clothes as the day before at Darien Lake, (orange shirt, and black suit) But that's okay!!! =) He was great again he sang more of the songs I know off his album!!! He sang Everything About You, which he said was about an old girlfriend that died, (Is this the same girl that Jessica by Jewel is about?) And he sang Impala, Silver Lining, ABC's of Love (without the take off your shirt and show me what you got... part, that he sang at Darien Lake), and the song with Liz from Rusted Root (good song), and the Star Wars song (very cute)!!!! Steve is really great, he's absolutely adorable, and very talented!!! =) I really enjoyed him!!! Then I started talking to a security guard about how to get backstage passes. I didn't get any =( He said I had to know someone, I said well I know you, but he said that wasn't good enough!!! Oh, well!!! =( I really wanted to meet Jewel so that I could thank her... But oh well what could I do... I have to say that the concert was so much better than Darien Lake, I wouldn't even put them in the same category!!! This was so much more intimate the stage was lower than the seats so you were looking down instead of up, and it was kinda like a theatre it was really great!!! And the sound was great!!! Then... Jewel came out onto the stage and the crowd started cheering. She was wearing a black tang top and the same skirt as at Darien Lake the day before in pink instead of orange though. (Long skirt with a pocket in the front and a zipper on each side) And she had this matching pink thingy in her hair. Jewel sang Near You Always and Deep Water and she probably said hi to the audience. She asked if anyone saw her when she used to play at C'est What (I didn't =( ) And a couple people clapped and she said Only a couple of you clapped because there was only like nine people there. I'm trying to remember the funny things that she said. Someone shouted something out, I don't know what and she said in a really cool voice "What kinda girl do you think I am." It was really funny. And she said there was a TV on in one of the rooms above the stadium and she said it was distracting and she wondered what they were watching up there. Then she said "I have really exciting news, I'm going to be the new spokes person for Crest" everyone cheered. She said "I have the whole ad planned out" And she smiles and pretends she's holding a tube of tooth paste beside her face and she says "Hi, I'm Jewel if you can't have straight teeth at least have clean teeth, use Crest." But she said, "They haven't gotten back to me yet though." Everyone started laughing and cheering it was very funny. It sounded like she was going to start to tell a story before Hands but all she said was "this is a song." I thought that was cute!!! She also told this really long like 10 minute version of the YWMFM story, I just recently heard it for the first time so I recognized it right away but it started with a road trip to Mexico and Jewel is the best storyteller, she is funnier than most comedians. She said she took a brake from touring to take a 20 hour road trip with Steve hee, hee. "It wasn't supposed to be so long but "Someone" go lost..." as she looks back at Steve "And someone wouldn't stop to ask for directions..." looking back at Steve. Then she says she could hear howling in the distance so Jewel starts howling owwwwoooo... and then she says, she was trying to get the perfect howl so she said she sat and practiced howling for awhile until she got the right one!!! It was hilarious!!! She says she was complaining about how long it was taking and she says Steve said "Oh, shut up..." and Jewel hits the air beside her =O everyone got alittle quiet (Steve hit Jewel? =O) Then she says "I'm just kidding, there was no domestic violence." Then she jokes "I hit him" and the audience cheers. Then she starts to pretend to cry "Steve, I'm so tired..." and then they saw a hotel sign so she goes "ohhhhhh..." But when they got there it was closed so... they broke in (yup) But she said she didn't think it was wrong because it was so easy, and if it was that easy to brake in it makes it okay!!! =) Then she goes into a really funny version of the YWMFM drug bust story, including her being worried she'd have to protect Steve from big queens while they were in jail. And her pretending to be Steve near the drugs going "Oh, this is nauty, oh this is very nauty." In a very funny voice the story was hilarious, and of coarse Jewel would get side tracked every so often, you know how she does =) and Steve demonstrated all the different movements he had to do in the YWMFM video it was cute!!! At the end she said "You are all probably wondering the point to all this well..." During the chorus of YWMFM she shared a mike with Steve. She said she was sick of her album and she wants to sing all new songs tonight. =) So people started yelling out songs, someone yelled out Boy Needs A Bike so she started to sing it quietly to herself then she said she doesn't remember the lyrics. =( But, then she sang Carnivore which is one of my favorite songs and she sang Sometimes It Be That Way, and Enter From The East. She sings so beautifully, it was really great, she has such vocal range it's amazing, and the sound was so clear!!! =) Oh, and she sang that new song, I still don't know what it's called (Does Anyone Believe In Love Any More?) but it was really lovely!!! Also, she sang Foolish Games and oh, What's Simple Is True fits in some where and she sang Life Uncommon, she seems to really enjoy that song, she sang it really well!!! I was surprised that nobody was standing cause it's that type of song (I thought it was perfect for Woodstock) She really rocked on Down and Love Me Just, Leave Me Alone. At about this time people started going right up to the stage so me and my friend Jill ran down to the stage!!! And I was trying to get as close as I could I'm very polite so I don't push!!! =) It was so amazing to be that close to the stage!!! Jewel was really rocking it was so great I was right by the stage, I couldn't believe it!!! Then Jewel started singing Who Will Save Your Soul the really great version, and she was doing her little dance and then she started singing. Then she did that back and forth thing with Doug and everyone was cheering, and I knew it was almost finished so I tried to get as close to the little stage below the stage that I knew she'd stand on for the encore. So, I got right beside it and got out my ANWA book and a pen out and tested the pen on my hand (just incase) and Jewel left the stage. Everyone was cheering encore encore and I'm getting squashed up against the guy in front of me and the security guard beside me and then Jewel comes back out. She walks over to the little stage below the stage and she starts singing Absence Of Fear. Wow, Jewel is standing right in front of me singing. Absence Of Fear really is a beautiful song. Well, I've got my ANWA book with the pen in it up in the air with everyone's hands. And Jewel is standing right there, it's so weird cause you see her in music videos and then she's standing a couple inches away from you that's so cool. So, she finishes singing Absence Of Fear and she starts singing Chime Bells acappela and everyone's cheering and then she touches a bunch of peoples hands and one guy yells "I'm never washing my hands again." (ookay) and then... She reaches over and takes my book!!! =o yee,heee... And I hear my friend in background scream "she took the book" [commentary] And Jewel walks over to the other mike and she says she doesn't like reading poetry out loud and she's flipping through the book and she asks, "Who's book is this?" So, I put up my hand and I said "It's mine" and she asks, "What's your name?" And I shout "Elana" and she says "Sorry I can't hear you I'll take the things out of my ears" she could have just said yah what ever and read a poem but she took the things out of her ears and said, "What's your name?" So I shouted again "my name's Elana" and I hear my friend in the background going "her name's elana" and then Jewel says... "Hi Elana, it's nice to meet you." Oh my god Jewel's talking to me, I didn't expect her to cause she didn't the night before to the other person. Everyone's shouting out different poems and Jewel tells them to "shhhhh..." and asks me "Was there a certain poem you wanted me to read?" so I shout "Miracle!!!" she can't hear me "What" I said "Miracle, it's near the end where the pen was." Then she reads Miracle and signs it and walks over and gives the book back to me!!! =) And I say "Thank you" Then she thanks everyone for coming and leaves!!! The person next to me says, "wow, you are so lucky do you even know how lucky you are?" and I say, "yes, I do" with a smile. Well, I really wanted to meet Jewel and I kind of did even though it was in front of like 5000 other people she did say "Hi Elana, it's nice to 'meet' you". So I think that counts!!! =) So, it was an amazing experience!!! =) For some reason some people thought that Jewel read a poem I wrote, why would she read a poem I wrote at "her" concert? I guess they didn't realize Jewel has a book, because more than one person said that to me =) So, my book got autographed and I guess Jewel's hand's were sweaty cause I have her finger prints on the book too which is kinda funny!!! Hee, hee Anyway, the people with backstage passes stayed in the room, so we were walking out really slowly and just before they were going to kick us out I saw Steve walking back around the stage. So, I said to my friend yell Steve so we started yelling Steve and he looked up and started waving at us. So my friend yelled, "where's Jewel?" he didn't really answer so I yelled "not that we don't love you." So he started blowing kisses to me, and then I started blowing kisses to him then he said he had to go and waved goodbye and I waved goodbye and he left!!! =) hee, hee so I kinda met Steve too!!! =) He's absolutely adorable!!! Well, we started to leave and then we saw someone else with a Jewel tour thing around his neck. We stopped to talk to him and he happened to work for Jewel he's head of something I forget what and he told me some interesting things about Jewel that I didn't know, and some interesting stuff about the band too so I talked to him for awhile and I discussed Jewel with him and talk to him about the merchandise, Then we said goodbye and told him to say hi to Jewel for us!!! hee, hee Then I went home!!! So I would have to say that was the ultimate concert experience!!! Jewel talked to me and Steve blew kisses to me, what a night!!! I know I will always treasure my ANWA book, I'm very happy!!! =)
