Hi everyone, How are you all doing? Sorry this is alittle late, but better late then never... =) I've had the best 2 days ever!!! It started by making my parents drive me all the way to Darien Lake to see Jewel in concert on Saturday and then back to Toronto to see her on Sunday!!! So, this will be a concert review for Darien Lake and I'll send the Toronto one after, okay? I have to say that I was alittle disappointed with the sound quality, at Darien Lake it was very unclear even when Jewel talked. I felt at times the audience wasn't cheering because they could hear what Jewel was doing with her voice but rather they were cheering because they already knew what she was doing, so that was alittle disappointing. I got to the concert early so I could hear the opener Rusted Root, they were okay for the first few minutes but an hour was alittle much!!! Then after Rusted Root Steve Poltz came out to sing and the first thing he said was "where's my beer" so someone ran on stage to give it to him!!! He was really great, the audience seemed to really enjoy him!!! He was wearing a black jacket and pants and a orange shirt!!! I'm not too sure about the setlist... I know he sang the abused chair song, Star wars song, ABC's of Love, and Gold's Gym Guy, and he sang a song with Liz from Rusted Root!!! I really enjoyed him, he's good!!! Then... It was time for Jewel!!! =) I've never seen Jewel live in concert so I was excited!!! She came out and sang Near You Always. She was wearing a black tang top and a long orange skirt with a zipper on each side, She looked nice!!! Then she sang Deep Water and said hi to the audience and then sang Hands. She sang the new version of Jupiter, and then some guy yelled out "I Love You, Jewel!!!" and she said "The show just wouldn't be the same without some twenty year old guy yelling out, I Love You Jewel!!!" she said it in a funny voice. Then well I have a really bad memory and I can't remember what order she sang the rest of the songs in so I'm sorry!!! If I'm wrong someone tell me!! =) She said before YWMFM that Steve and her argued about the line "I brake the yolks and make a smiley face". She said that he thought it was a chick line, and a guy wouldn't say that. Then Jewel declared that it's okay to call her a chick, she said she doesn't mind!!! (Okay) So, the audience cheered!!! Then Steve sang the line how he thought it should go sorry I don't remember what type of fort he said "I stab the yolks with [some kind] fork, I can't believe she's taking me to court" it was funny and the audience laughed. Then Jewel sang YWMFM and for the chorus she'd run over to Steve and they'd share a mike and sing it together, it was very sweet and the audience loved it!!! She sang Morning Song and then before she sang Innocence Maintained she told the story about being interviewed by the German guy, she's the best story teller she did it in the whole accent and everything!!! Then she said that German's don't have very good sense of humors or something then she said I'm aloud to say that cause I'm German so don't send me letters, actually I'm Swiss German, so it's kinda the same. (I didn't know Jewel was part German, is she or was she mistaken? =) ) Oh, she also sang a new song, I don't know what it's called, it's not listed on the web site but it was very nice, (Does Anyone Believe In Love Any More?) it was the one where she says she's part women, and half child I think. It was very beautiful. Then she sang Foolish Games. She seems to really enjoy her self when she sings Life Uncommon she really lets loose, so that was a high light, everyone was standing and people started going to the stage, I didn't though. =( Oh, I forget where Barcelona fits in but that was great too. When it got to the chorus the lights fully lit up the stage it was really cool, then midway through the song Jewel left the stage while there was the instrumental. I wonder where she went, then she came back out to finish it at "the red light is following me...". Okay, back to where I was after Life Uncommon she sang Down So Long. You know the part where Doug has his guitar solo type thing well, Jewel went over to talk to Steve, while they were both playing they're guitars. I was wondering when she was coming back to her mike cause I know when she's suppose to start singing again, and I guess she suddenly realized that it was going to be close too cause she started running over to her mike and she barely got there in time, I thought that was funny!!! Then she sang Down and Love Me Just, Leave Me Alone and Jewel can really rock!!! Then she sang Who Will Save Your Soul the really long cool version with Jewel's little dance at the beginning, and the back and forth thing with her voice and Doug's guitar and she even did the "when my kitty gets hungry it goes meow, meow, meow..." thingy from woodstock so that was a really great song!!! Then she left the stage!!! =( But of coarse she came back for the encore Absence Of Fear which is a really beautiful song, one of my favorites. Then she sang Chime Bells acapella, which was also really great she was standing on this little stage below the real stage. Then someone handed her the ANWA book and she read a poem I think it was Neruda's Widow and she said she doesn't like to read poems a lot or something then she signed the book and handed it back to the person!!! (this is where a light bulb appears above my head, meaning I got an idea!!! =) ) Then she left the stage!!! It was a really great concert, but if that's all I would have saw I would have been alittle disappointed, because of the really bad sound quality!!! Oh, one other cute thing, Jewel said Steve and her looked like they were going to the prom together when she stood beside him because they were both dressed in orange and black it was funny!!! Over all Jewel was great she is a very talented vocalist, but you can't really tell her full potential from her albums but when she let's loose it's really amazing what she can do with her voice!!! So, I did really enjoy the concert!!! =) It was great seeing her live!!! Oh, she had a lot of merchandise at the concert, posters, stickers, t-shirts, tour books, hats... I wanted a tour book and one of the new black tour t-shirts but I decided to wait till I was in Toronto to get them!!! If anyone made a tape of the Darien Lake concert or has pictures, could you please email me? thanks always, elana ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 21:40:04 EDT From: KESACTS@aol.com Subject: * Appreciation... Well, I haven't posted in a real long time, and most of you probably don't know/remember me. That's okay. Just wanted to say that I got the Jewel stickers today (from voting on the site) and they are real cute. That's a real good thing they did... Also, I finally heard the radio version of Jupiter. I really like it. I don't tend to like her many different versions of songs, but this one i think is great. She went crazy, and she didn't cross over any lines. It's fun, and kind of rock. Fun... That's all. To keep the 7,869 concertgoers in tune with her Saturday night, Jewel sprinkled her performance with some Italian opera, some scat singing and some yodeling. These diversions helped combat the snooze factor, but an aura of mellow sameness enveloped the concert - despite the 25-year-old's immense vocal talents. Interplay between Jewel and guitarist/ex-beau Steve Poltz provided the evening's liveliest moments. Jewel co-wrote the smash hit I Was Meant for You with Poltz, who was given a chance to sing more masculine lyrics during the tune's opening segment. The pair followed I Was Meant for You with a cheek-to-cheek, tight-harmony duet of I Thought I Saw You Last Night. Earlier, Jewel grouped the first three songs of current album Spirit to nice effect. Deep Water, What's Simple Is True and Hands include optimistic truisms such as "It's nothing without love" and "In the end, only kindness matters." Hit single Hands rocked the hardest, with Jewel's band stepping beyond its New Age arrangements for a stab at Neil Young territory. Call it "Crazy Horse lite." Dressed in black pants and navel-exposing dress shirt, Jewel expertly preened and pouted for cameras projecting close-ups on a large video screen at the back of the stage. During a 30-minute performance as solo supporting act, Poltz (3 stars) did a fine job of transforming big-league venue Deer Creek into a cozy coffee-house setting. As boy with acoustic guitar, Poltz applies a brave wit to tunes equally influenced by Elvis Costello and Tom Waits. He had the crowd with him when he sang about the ABC's of love, Krispy Kreme and losing a girl to "that Gold's Gym guy." As jam-oriented opening act, underappreciated Rusted Root (3-1/2 stars) packed an array of sonic textures into its hourlong global hoe-down. Closely cropped vocalist Michael Glabicki guided his Pittsburgh sextet through fiery, melodic and dance-friendly material that's always well-received in Indianapolis. Near the end of Rusted Root's set, five band members participated in a storming, freestyle percussion interlude powerful enough to bring rain. In some alternate universe, Rusted Root sells out 20,000-seat venues while the Dave Matthews Band struggles to find work. ===================================== SETLIST: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands Jupiter some italian opera song (she said the title, but I don't know what it is) You Were Meant For Me (Poltz got to sing his masculine line) I Thought I Saw You Last Night Don't Everything Breaks Sometimes Too Darn Hot Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games Down So Long Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul ENCORE: Absence of Fear (wanted to read poetry, but no one had a book handy) Summertime ============================================== My extremely short review: I loved it. She rocked and was awesome. Six of us EDA's did meet before, during and after the show and that was cool. I also saw the Cincinnati show the night before. I'll hopefully post the setlist later this week if no one else does. She did read poetry and yodel to end that show. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 21:55:45 -0500 From: T H Subject: * Cincinnati (Riverbend) Review (8/6/99) Jewel a little lost in Riverbend-size arena Review by Rick Bird, Post music writer It was a show for new-age hippies Friday night as Riverbend hosted a sparse, mellow audience for the jam-band meanderings of Rusted Root and the pop musings of Jewel Kilcher. The audience was an intriguing mix of neo-hippie Root fans, teeny-bopper Jewel followers and red-blooded men attracted to Jewel's dreamy music and sensuous looks. The show opened with Rusted Root, the Pittsburgh-based band that has built a Grateful-Dead-style following based on its extended, eloquent jam feel. The audience was unaware that this tour may be the band's swan song: According to reports from Pittsburgh, the group has decided to break up after the tour. If there was any friction in the band, however, it wasn't apparent. Rusted Root played a solid set hindered only by the usual jam-band problem of not knowing when to end a song. If there was a star of the night, it was Steve Poltz, who played an acoustic set after Rusted Root. The San Diego singer-songwriter lived with Jewel for two years before she became famous, and the two co-wrote her biggest hits - ''Who Will Save Your Soul?'' and ''You Were Meant for Me.'' Poltz, who also plays guitar in Jewel's band, provided the night's comic relief with a clever set of inventive, fun songs that included such tunes as ''Why Are You Going Out With the Guy From Gold's Gym?'' and a goofy tribute song to the ''Star Wars'' movies. Then Jewel took the stage with her powerful, if girlish, voice. She has practically assumed the role of the Linda Ronstadt of the '90s, with a vocal style that both rocks and drips with intimacy. Jewel's empathic, sensitive singing was refreshing and poignant as she went through such hits as ''Pieces of You,'' ''Who Will Save Your Soul?'' and ''Hands'' (from her new album, ''Spirit''). The 25-year-old's tender singing and light pop fare are almost too sweet for a rock show, however. Jewel's biggest problem is translating her folk-based pop sounds to an arena crowd of this size. As tasty as her set was, it still seemed a show meant for a smaller club. Her stage style is to wink, nod and toss her hair, and she stayed in her '90s Earth mother role by reading the crowd a poem from her book ''A Night Without Armor.'' Through it all, the huge video screen almost saved the show, picking up her subtle nuances. While she closed the set wailing and rocking out on several songs, Jewel still seems a few years away from being a rock 'n' roll diva who can truly captivate the big crowds.
