I know Jewel for just 1 month (ok..ok...), but I like her so much! I saw yesterday, some bands on Woodstock, and the most important, I saw Jewel singing Hands. It was the first time I see her live, she didn't seem glad to be there... But I wanted to talk about the day when there was fire, I saw it in the news before, but I'm french, and I'm in USA for vacation, and didn't understand well. I realized what happened, and It makes me mad, to see so many stupid guys, destroying everything. I think it is one more exemple of the human stupidity. And Woodstock = Peace & Love. I don't understand them. I tried to find Bits & Baubles in Target the day it came out, but I didn't find it, and nobody couldn't help me there, they don't know anything about the CD, they are not organized... It's mostly this horrible never-ending rhyme about Jewel's life, but if you click on the very last part, you can see a unreleased clips from VH1 Storytellers!!! ALL of the smoe.org lists and web pages will be down during this period. However, the EDA/Jewel list will be down one extra day so I can attend to some business that commands my attention. I will "bring the list down" beginning Friday morning at 6:30am eastern USA time, and will have it back up either late Sunday night or Monday morning. It would help immensley if you do not send any posts to the list during this period. I'll post a reminder just before this temporary shutdown begins. Well, my name's Elizabeth and i live in a city called riverside in southern california (about 1 hour and 45 min from San Diego and 1 hour from LA). I'm 17 and love Jewel from what i know of her. The first time i heard about angelfood was a couple months ago because, well, i wasn't really up to date with the whole internet thing. Well, i first heard of Jewel from the radio when they played WWSYS and i loved it. then i saw her on some VH1 special with Melissa Etheridge and i thought "cool" that's her! so after that i bought her PoY CD and loved Jewel even more. Then when her Spirit CD came out, i bought it immediatly. And so forth, i have come to an obsession (well as my friends who don't understand see it) so i came to the internet to seek comfort in those who love Jewel also. And i have found those things in Jewel mailing lists. *yay* In late June, i saw Jewel for the first time in concert in Irvine. I was ecstatic. it was wonderful and i know that i will continue seeing her in the future as much as i can. so, i'm finished rambling, but i thoght i'd introduce myself to everyone ... ~Elizabeth ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Aug 1999 18:37:32 EDT From: Puzzled36@aol.com Subject: * Bits and Baubles Bits and Baubles is awesome! I went to the Starlake, Pittsburgh show like some of the others, and I thought I'd add a few things. First of all~RR is totally amazing! I really didn't know anything about them ahead of time, but once I got there I was very impressed. Pittsburgh is their home town, so they had a HUGE fan base there. A number of people there that came to see them left after they were done which was pretty interesting. The funniest thing about Steve's performance was that he kept mentioning how he wasn't feeling quite well cause apparently some of the RR peeps took him out and got him drunk the night before. I guess he was hung over, but his performance really didn't reflect it @ all. The crowd was the most receptive to the Star Wars Song, ABC song, and waterfalls. Oh, and they really liked the one testicle explination. Some girls behind me went and bought "One Left Shoe" after he was done which I thought was pretty cool. I wrote down the setlist if anyone wants it. Then, we had to wait an atrocious amount of time for jewel to come out. I don't know if this is normal or if there was a problem, but the crowd got pretty antsy from what I could tell. Then the lights went down and this picture of jewel as a little girl came up on the huge projection screen and she started Near you Always. I was glad to see that she wasn't completly "made up" meaning hair poofed, lots of make-up etc. She looked more natural. I was very disappointed @ the set list....I think the large delay before the set had something to do with SIBTW and racecar driver and possibly others being taken out. What she did do she did well though. I was suprised that she really didnt play her guitar that much though. Especially on the songs that she usually does like YWMFM, etc. My mom remarked how much she reminded her of Janis Joplin which I thought was ironic b/c of that discussion on the list. One very interesting moment came @ the very end of the concert when jewel told the audience to call and request Jupiter on a radio station that was refusing to play it. Right before she left the stage after the encore, she said something along the line of "So call the fuckers and request it" which I thought was pretty hilarious. All in all, it was an amazing concert. I'd love to hear what you other EDA's thought that were there. Thank you Tiger Moon for expressing your feelings about Jewel and being so open and honest with them. It was a very touching way to put things and some of the things you said brought tears to my eyes (yeah, I'm kind of a sentimental, but that's why I love Jewel). You know, Jewel is such a good person and I know that it would break her heart if she saw some of the stuff that is posted on this list. But as you said, when she reads something positive and filled with the spirit and honesty of life, like your post :), then it gives her the strength to go on and know that she is making a difference. I have heard so many stories of people telling me how much they have been influenced and inspired by Jewel and it makes my heart happy. I too fit into this category and cannot express how thankful I am that Jewel is part of my life, no, not her so called image, but her trueness of heart, her spirituality, her faith, her confidence to do the things she wants, her strength of will and her positive outlook on life. When I was first introduced to Jewel I did not have a lot of confidence in the human spirit and humanity in general. I see so much anger, violence, stupidty, ignorance, uncariness, and apathy in the world that it would be very easy just to give up. But like Jewel says, cynicism (sp?) isn't smarter, it's only easier and so rather than focusing on the bad things in life, I have learned more (and am still learning) to focus on the good things, the bravery, the courage of people, the random acts of kindness, the spirituality that people have, all of these heart warming things that make me want wake up every morning, to stay alive and breath the spirit of life 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and to help other people find this same peace of mind I have found in themselves. If I was ever able to talk to Jewel, that is what I would say to her, how she does make a difference, I mean she is very attractive and can be very sexual and stuff and I do like that about her but in the end that is only icing on the cake. What matters the most is her spirit. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting that email and I wish you all the strength that your spriit can offer you. And to every other EDA out there, you guys make a difference too, I feel it. I wish I could meet and talk to every one of you. Thanks for making this world of ours a better place. Since a lot of stuff has been covered, I will only mention new stuff. First, hi to Steve and Patrick, it was cool meeting you and being able to have someone to talk to during the concert was cool! I didn't know there were so many EDA's at this concert, from all the reviews there seems to have been a few there. I wish we could have all got together, oh well. My seat was AMAZING!!! I had a front row seat to the very left of the centre seating. Wish I could have been more central but front row... wow, can't complain too much. I had my little hand held camera and I was scared they wouldn't let me take pictures but no-one said anything and I took 3 rolls. Got em back today and words cannot describe how happy I am with them. When we were at the stage I was able to take some really good ones, I mean these are killer pictures, with Jewel looking right at me and smiling, and another with the drummer and elec. guitar player looking at me and smiling! I am thinking about posting them on the web. It was my first time seeing Jewel in concert and actually the first concert I have ever gone to. It was an incredible experience, and seeing her in concert is so much different than just listening to the CD's. It was really an intimate evening with the stories that Jewel told and how she played up to the crowd, it enhanced the music a lot. I think the evening got better exponentially, my fav. song was WWSYS with an extended scat version with Pettibone. That kicked ass! I was really glad she played Life Uncommon, this is one of my favorites. I also liked DSL with all the energy she and the band (they were really good) put into it. Abscence of Fear brought tears of joy to my eyes, Foolish Games did the same (these are my other two favorites) and Chime Bells was a good ending to a great concert. The only other song I wanted to hear was Angel Standing By but you can't have everything. I thought the reading of Miracle was appropriate for the evening. After Jewel signed the book I thought she was going to sign my duotang full of interviews that I put together but she didn't. Not a big deal. More to say but this post is already too long. End by saying: Steve was really good, I think his CD's will be entering my collection before long and it was nice meeting two EDA's and their friends. Whenever I tell my friends and bosses that I'm on this list they think I'm crazy but when you get to meet good people as a result, then it;s all worth it!
