So what if it was only 5 or 6 songs? They showed LMJLMA, the unedited WWSYS and the full YWMFM story..! What was the song she did at the end? Was it called "Angel"? She was beautiful, more so that usual! It was a great night at VH1altogether.. Melissa's Mehind The Music rocked too.. I've decided to write a review. But who the heck am I to write a review? So I've decided to add a little drama as well. Okay, it's not drama. Just more of how difficult it was for me to get to the show. So be forewarned, it's quite long. I put in a request for a ride to the concert on Wednesday I believe, but since it was only two days before the concert I knew the odds weren't great of getting one. I received a few "wish I could help" emails, which were well received. But in any case my friend and I were on our own. We'll call him Nathan since that's his name. And we figured it was a 45-minute drive so a cab would be pretty expensive. We made some calls got some connections and numbers to some bus companies that could help. We find a bus company that wasn't very good therefore I won't plug them on here. Online we try to read their schedule and we take the 5:29 bus, which is a few blocks from where both of us work. The problem with taking a bus for the first time to a city for the first time is you don't know if you're going the right way or if you've hit your stop. So at 7:05 the bus driver asks us where we're going. When he told us he wasn't going to our stop and we were on the wrong bus the excitement began. After we got off the bus and looked at the highway in front of us, we made up our minds we were going to walk along the highway, in the direction the bus driver pointed us to. Sure, the guy betrayed us by not taking us where we needed to go, but what were we going to do? So we walk and walk, sometimes crossing exit lanes and waving to 65 mph passer-byers. 45 minutes later we see the mall, which was our landmark we were aiming for. Not only had we survived, but also we could see the finish line. Nathan and I were hungry so we had yet another choice. Eat at the mall or eat at the venue. Eat fast cheap food in the food court or eat fast expensive food at the venue? Mall or venue? Mall wins. Of course we end up losing because the food there is expensive and it takes forever to get. While I was waiting for my food there was a girl in front of me and she looked oddly familiar. She looked a lot like Jewel, but I didn't want to stare. Yes I knew it wasn't Jewel, but the similarities were uncanny. She even laughed like Jewel. Except for the tattoo on her shoulder, the braces, and the child, I would have been fooled. Moving on. We leave the mall and head the same way we were going before. Then at 8:10 we finally get the Merriweather Post Pavilion. As soon as we get there we see some people Nathan knows from his school, which is really a great coincidence, since both of us go to school in California. They end up being our ride back to DC after the show. We get to our seats, somewhere in the center in hh. You know where that is right? Back of the seats in the center. Unfortunately we missed Rusted Root, and a good portion of Steve Poltz. It could have been worse though- a lot worse. I must say I was quite impressed with Steve. I had never heard his music before but had been looking forward to it based on the opinions of many of you. We heard three of his songs and a few of his jokes and then he was through. Intermission, yada yada yada. Then Jewel came out. She was simply awesome. I had high expectations, and that made me nervous. What if she wasn't as good as I hoped? What if I felt let down? I mean I went to some fairly far lengths to see her. Well, she was better then I hoped. And two minutes in I knew I wouldn't be let down. It is the first show I've ever been too, where I wanted complete silence. I wanted to hear every note, every comment, and every aspect of Jewel. She opened with Near You Always as expected. I'll I could think is wow. Her voice was overcoming. I was very surprised to find out that her concert didn't sound forced. Simply because on this list there's a lot of talk about how it's not the same Jewel. I thought maybe the label wants something that Jewel can't really get behind. Well, I didn't think that for one moment during the show. In my opinion she seemed so comfortable and natural. Also the fact that so many of Jewel's songs from her first two albums are slow tempo-ed, I think it's impressive that with just her voice alone she can move people. Of course she has a lot of rock songs in her overall plethora of material. And when she played a few like, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, a ton of people had to stand up. Personally, I think Jewel's versatility, as an artist should be admired. I don't think she does it so she can sell more records. I think she does it cause it makes her happy. Purely speculation though. In the future, I think she'll have no problems mixing ballads, and rock, or country-ish sounds on a cd. At this point I don't think I could misunderstand her intentions on an album like that either. ---Off my high horse---- She sang her hits through out. All of which got quite an ovation a few seconds in. WWSYS, YWMFM, Hands, Foolish Games, and Down So Long - all were awesome. She ended with the extended version of Who Will Save Your Soul, which I think is my favorite song, but it depends on my mood. My point is that it was nothing like the version I fell in love with. Good or bad? Well actually that's good because this version was incredible as well. So I think of it as getting two great songs as opposed to one. She told the story of how her and Steve met at a doughnut shop he was working at, and also about their friendship. Very smoothly she began talking about a song they wrote that had a "chick line" that he wouldn't sing. Jewel asked him to sing his version of the line, which is now the famous (or infamous) "I stab my yolks with my goddamn fork." Wa-la! It's YWMFM. Jewel played Carnivore, which made me extremely happy. It wasn't the version I had heard before, and this case I was kind of disappointed. But hey it happens what can you do? She sang songs I hadn't heard before, but I wasn't sure if they were new. I'll have to find out or maybe read some of the other reviews. Honestly I didn't read all of them because I didn't want to feel like I had been to a Jewel concert before going to a Jewel concert. Jewel's encore, if I'm not mistaken concluded with Absence of Fear, Angel Standing By, and Chime Bells. Whenever I see Jewel yodel I think it's easy because she makes it look easy. Then whenever I try to yodel I end up blabbering gibberish. Jewel got another standing ovation after her encore, but it wasn't enough for a third. After the show Nathan and I, along with the two people he knew from Stanford, went to the hotel where Jewel was rumored to be staying. When we got there after midnight there wasn't anything going on except for one guy with some sort of pass around his neck leaving the hotel. We sat in the lobby talking about the concert. We weren't going to bother her if she really was there, but we had nowhere else to go. Plus, at the hotel you need a card to get on the 8th and 9th floor. And the jump from the 10th to the 9th would have been extremely risky. I'm joking of course. Finally, we left the hotel at 1:30 or so and headed back to DC. Thanks for coming this far. There were a few bumps in the proverbial road to the concert but it was definitely worth it. If you've seen Jewel you probably agree, and if you're going to see Jewel you'll probably agree in the future. I've been lucky enough to see two jewel shows in one week. I was also at the Jones Beach show in New York last Saturday. I have to say that I preferred the Toronto Show for a couple of reasons... first of all - her acoustic set was MUCH better at the Toronto Show. She started with a song I've never heard before. part of the chorus is "Down Down Down" (it's not the rocky song "Down" BTW).. she said it was new.. she played it at woodstock I think. She then started to sing a song I recognised but couldn't put a name on.. and suddenly when she got to the chorus I realised.. it was CARNIVORE!! Now I really thought this one had been put to rest forever but I'm SOOO glad that it hasn't been.. it's a WONDERFUL song.. one of my faves. then she sang Sometimes it be that way - which was fantastic also. She rounded off the acoustic set with Enter From the East.. which was beautiful. the second thing i liked about this show was the fact that the audience was SOOO lively.. much more so than the Jones Beach Show. when Down So Long played a few people started getting up and dancing and then as soon as she started singing Down everybody just RUSHED down to the front of the stage - she didn't ask us to or anything. I got RIGHT up close! everyone was dancing and clapping and you could see she was having a good time. Who Will Save Your Soul was fabulous also. and the last great thing was the fact that I got to see the encore. at jones beach i had to rush off after WWSYS because i needed to get a bus but this time i got to hear Absence of Fear, a poem (miracle - dedicated to Elaine.. or Elaina) and Chime Bells. Anyway.. overall it was a great show here's the full set list: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter You Were Meant for Me [unknown acoustic song] Carnivore Sometime it be that way enter from the east barcelona life uncommon foolish games down so long down love me just leave me alone who will save your soul Absence of Fear [poem - miracle] Chime Bells cya later steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 00:38:56 EDT From: Piperpeace@aol.com Subject: * Storytellers!!!!
