For anybody who was at the PNC concert last Friday, if you happened to have gotten a close up picture of Jewel when we were right at the stage, could you please email me?? My batteries died half-way through. =( So I have a bunch of good sorta close ones (7th row!) but not any when I was at the stage....unfortunately. So if you do, I'd appreciate it. Okay, I know I can't help it because she already wrote the song, but ever since I absorbed what the lyrics of Jupiter meant, it's driven me insane. What does Jupiter have to do with love? I mean, I don't know how many ways one can't think of Jupiter, I only came up with the planet and the God. Jupiter= Zeus, and he was such a Bill Clinton, I don't really think it was that kind of love. I would have picked Venus(=Aphrodite). But oh well, maybe I'll never find out. - --- ~*Liz*~, the Misplaced Angel O =) "Nature has a funny way of breaking what does not bend", Jewel, from "Innocence Maintained" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 19:53:57 EDT From: LowEndMix@aol.com Subject: Re: * TRL I thought that only one vote is counted on Trl? Any area EDAs are invited, however, you absolutely must let me know that you are coming by Saturday night. I live in Oakland, NJ. It's Northwest Bergen County, near the NY state border and at the intersection of 287, Rt. 17, and 208. It's about 1/2 an hour out of Manhatten. I will give you directions when you contact me. Write to Alice_Esteves@brown.edu. BTW-there will be a fair number of non-EDAs there (my school friends, my brother's friends, and some guys from my parent's office)....but I promise that they won't bite as long as you don't. Hope that some of you can come...don't forget your bathings suits and towels...also, any CDs you might want me to play. Also, about Woodstock, I think it's unrealistic to try and judge it based on what MTV and the news had to say about it. I went and had a great time. Jewel was amazing, and so were many of the other artists. I actually left Sunday evening, so I missed the chaos at the end...however, the entire time I was there I saw no violence or other major disturbances. My only real complaint about the entire thing was the porta-johns...but it was definitly worth it. There is no way that TV could show what it was like to actually be there...and to me, being there was great overall. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 18:42:32 -0600 (MDT) From: Laurel Crump Subject: * Re: Jewel promo CD at Target stores - more info (cost etc) HI All!! One step up on a few of the people who went to Woodstock this weekend. And I'm uninjured. Even better. So now that I got that out of the way, here's my Woodstock experience ... this is long, so if you wanna scroll down to my thoughts on Jewel, go right ahead. :) Day 1: Me and my friend left here (Kapuskasing, Ontario) at 6:00 in the morning on Wednesday. We drove down with a couple of my friends who were going to southern Ontario. Got a flat tire on the way down, which sucked 'cause none of us know how to change one, but we finally got it figured out, and we were on our way once again. Made it to London (where my friends were going) at about 7:00 at night. I met up with a few other friends from my university there, and we went out and partied that night. Day 2: Alarm didn't go off in the morning ... we had to catch a bus at 8:30 from London to Toronto, and we woke up at 7:30 instead of 6:30. But we BARELY made the bus, so we were able to relax for a bit. We got into Toronto at 11:00 ... my buddy made arrangements with some chick off the net who was renting a car and she would drive us down to Woodstock. So we waited there for 2 hours, until we finally thought she wasn't coming. We went to the phones and started to call everyone in Toronto with her last name ... but as we were calling, I saw some girl who looked like her, and luckily, it ended up being her. So we got in her car and started driving. She turned out to be a pretty cool girl ... she was a stripper, which made it even more cool ... hehe. ;) We took the backroads to get there, which probably took longer than if we stayed on the highway, but there was a lot of nice scenery, so it was alright. We finally got to Rome at about 9:00 at night. Took us an hour to find the Woodstock sight ... they didn't have any signs up anywhere, so we were SO lost. But when we did find it, we were like *wow*. An amazing sight ... the walls all painted up, looking awesome ... fireworks going off ... cars as far as the eye could see, with licence plates from all across Canada and the States. When we finally got through all the cars, we walked for about 15 minutes to the gates. We stood in line for like an hour, and then were let in, with only an extremely brisk bag check ... they didn't even frisk us, or open up our bags and look in. That's when we knew that things *might* get a bit outta hand. But we didn't care about that at the time ... we were just happy that we got our vodka in without any problems. :) So off to find our tent circle. We had made arrangements with about 400 people off the net to set up in one big area, which is what we needed to find. We walked and walked and walked ... impossible to find it. Then we saw 3 honeys with an MPS shirt on (thats what our circle was called). So they helped us find the circle. We set up our tents, and since we had SUCH a long day, we decided to go to sleep right away, and party the next day. Day 3: We woke up at about 11:00, I think, and about 15 of us were gonna head over to the main stage to go see James Brown and Sugar Ray. But of course, being since all of us met on the internet, they all wanted to go on the computers for a bit ... yippee. So we waited in another line for an hour, and finally got in ... they were in there for like 45 minutes, while I stood there, bored off my ass, waiting for them to finish whatever they were doing. We went over to the main stage after they were done, and found out that Sugar Ray had cancelled, so we waited there for the next act ... Jamiroquai. I don't like him, but we watched anyways ... he's a dirty guy ... talking about American titties and masturbation the whole time he played. But it was funny. :) Live came on next, but I really felt like going to sit down somewhere 'cause I was so tired, so we went back to the tents after about 3 songs. We rested there for a bit, smoked a couple bowls, met an awesome girl from Wisconsin, then got up and went to Offspring. They were fucking amazing. We were about 50 feet from the stage ... a huge mosh pit opened up right beside us, but we didn't go in ... I'm not THAT crazy, ya know. ;) During the set, *Everybody* by the Backstreet Boys came on, and there were 5 dummies set up on stage with BSB masks on. The lead singer from Offspring came out with a baseball bat and just destroyed them ... hehe ... funny stuff. And the dude from *Pretty Fly (for a white guy)* was there, too, doing crazy stuff on stage. KoRn came on next ... they were awesome, too. Crazy crowd, but I don't think anyone got hurt during it. Bush was on last, but we didn't wanna wait around to see them, so we went back to our tents, smoked some more, did a couple shrooms, screwed around with a girl, and had a great night. Day 4: I woke up at about 10:00, but my friend was still dead from the night before. So I just laid there for a couple of hours, listening to the girls outside my tent talking about how huge their boyfriend's penises were. I finally woke up my friend, but a little too late, 'cause the Tragically Hip were already started, and since it took like a half an hour walk from our tent to the main stage, we decided not to even try to make it on time. We went to get some food to eat instead, which was stupid 'cause everything costed SO much. We got a burger and a bottle of water, which came to $9 ... unbelievable. So we sat down and ate it, think we smoked up again, but I forget, then headed over to watch one of my favourite bands, Collective Soul, on the small stage. Turned out that they decided to switch places with Ice Cube, who was scheduled to play on Sunday ... at almost the same time as Jewel. :( So anyways, we went over to the main stage again, which took us another 30 minutes (the walking was waaaaaaaaay too much) to catch the end of Dave Matthews. Alanis was next, who is always great during concerts, put on a wicked show. Things stared getting crazy during Limp Bizkit who played after her, and the girl I was with was a small girl, so she wanted to leave ... so we listened to them from the sides. That's when one of the broadcasting towers was being shaken and trying to be knocked over. But all went ok, and Rage came on next ... we moved in *kinda* close for this, but kept our distance. It was just me and my friend now, 'cause the girl I was with had to go meet a friend. So we got close to the mosh pit, which was psycho, and listened to the concert, and only being pushed a few times. They put on an awesome show, too ... the crowd was REALLY into it. Metallica was on next, but I was so tired of standing, so I went back to my tent, did a couple of shrooms, and laid there for a couple of hours listening to muffled Metallica in the distance, until my friend came back. Time for the rave ... which (other than Jewel) was probably the best time of all of Woodstock. About 30000 people, all whacked up on something, whether it was E, weed, or whatever, were dancing to the psychadelic spinning of Fatboy Slim ... wow ... he was GREAT. I was dancing like a maniac, and usually I don't dance. It's just something about raves that get my motor running, and especially since it was Fatboy Slim, 'cause I LOVE his music. So somehow we worked our way to the front of the rave, then back out again, and back in ... we were both so fucked up we had no idea what was going on, but we had a crazy time nonetheless. Then I lost my friend. Shitty. I continued to dance for a little while longer, and I decided to go find him. As I was walking, some chick screamed to me and told me that I was wearing wicked pants. I thanked her, and she came over to me, talking about her being on E, and her wanting sex so bad, and that she shouldn't have it 'cause it'll be the best sex she's ever had and she doesn't want to ruin every other time, but she still wanted it so bad ... but since I'm not one to take advantage of girls when they're not in their right mind, I brought her to her tent, which she invited me in of course, but I said no and hurried away, and met my friend down the road. It was like 4:00 by this time, so we went to our tents and slept. Day 5: Last day of Woodstock. We ended up sleeping in 'til like 1:00 in the afternoon. Which was about the time that Our Lady Peace was starting. So we hurried over there (grabbing another $20 lunch on the way) and saw them perform ... there were SO many Canadians in the audience ... it was awesome ... made em feel like there were at home again. They played an alright set ... although too many real new stuff and not enough of their older music, but it was still good. We walked around for a bit after they were over ... smoked a bit more ... and decided to go watch Elvis Costello. We don't like him, but we knew it wasn't going to be THAT crowded, and since I wanted to be real close for Jewel, we went right to the front ... about 20 feet from the stage. He played a good set, I guess, even though I don't know him, but everyone around us thought he was like a god or something. I dunno. I just wanted my Jewel. :) And when she came on ... oh wow ... it was amazing. She was looking as beautiful as ever, as she started into Near You Always right away. Ahhh. Love that song. I think she went into Deep Water next, which of course was awesome ... just like every song she played. She sang with such AMAZING emotion and seemed like she was sooooooo into every song. Jupiter was simply perfect. I've never heard her new rendition of the song, so this was the first time I've heard it ... and wow. Other than Absence of Fear, Jupiter is my favourite song, so I'd have thought that she couldn't have done anything better to it, but once again, Jewel has come through with flying colours. Perfection. Foolish Games was full of emotion ... almost made a tear run down my cheek. Hands sounded like the album version, which was cool. You Were Meant for Me was the only song I was a *bit* disappointed in ... it was great, but I've heard better ... like I love it when she sings it real soft and quiet, then powerful at the heart-wrenching points, but she didn't do that. Oh well. It was still good. She played some NEW songs, too!! Hahahha ... yeah right ... if you consider 4 or 5 years old new, then sure! ;) Racecar Driver (which the audience really loved), Down (very well sung ... only the second time I've heard this song), and I *think* she played Love Me Just Leave Me Alone (I forget ... if this is the wrong song, sorry ... but I know whatever song it was, she played it great.) :) Down So Long and Life Uncommon were the other two off Spirit that were played, too, which also were perfect. Who Will Save Your Soul was one of the last songs, and holy crap, she did an awesome job on it. Probably the best I've EVER seen her sing that ... she added in some doo-wops and it was just phenomonal. Then for her encore, she sung the soft, melodic Angel Standing By ... ahhhhh ... very very well sung ... I closed my eyes throughout it ... it's just one of those songs where you just have to listen to, and the world around you disappears. She ended things with a very short Chime Bells ... did the first line, and then just yodeled ... slowly, then getting quicker, like she always does. But overall, I found her performance almost flawless, and if I had to give her a rating out of 10, I'd give her a 9.8 ... it was spectacular. I'd have paid the whole $260 (Canadian) that I paid for the ticket JUST to see that performance. So anyways, I left after Jewel to go see how much of the Collective Soul set I could see. Ended up only missing a few songs, but it didn't matter 'cause I saw them in March, and they played almost the identical setlist as they did then. But it's a *bit* better when you have 50,000 people screaming *Ooooh oohhh oooh ooohhh, Heaven let your light shine down* than having 3000 when I saw them in March. :) So after that, back to the tent to find the girl I was hanging with, but she was nowhere to be found. So I met up with my friend at the tent (he had gone to see Creed) and laid there for a few minutes, and then the girl came by. We smoked a bit, then went over to watch the Chili Peppers. They had already started when we got there, but not that far into it. They played great, as all of the artists did. Under the Bridge was awesome ... that's one of my favourite songs of all time, and they played it pefectly. That's when the chaos started. We looked behind us. There were about 10 fires buring on the hill behind us. Whoa. Some dude came out on the stage and politely asked for the fires to be put out. Of course, they weren't. The Chilis came back out, sang two songs (including, ironically, the song *Fire*, which could either have been because of all the fires, or it was leading into the Jimi Hendrix tribute, who was the writer of that song) then left. The Hendrix tribute sucked ... all it was was old Jimi pictures on a big screen, a couple of lasers, and him playing the national anthem. Supposedly, there were a lot of special guests in the area who were going to play, like Clapton, The Who, Puff Daddy, among many others. But they opted not to, because of the fires and the people getting rowdy. So it finished after the Star Spangled Banner was complete. Some 50 year old hippie guy climbed one of the towers (about 50 feet in the air) and stood there with his arms in the air, thinking he was the champion of the world. Everyone was taking pictures. We just hurried along. (Supposedly, the dude fell off the tower.) We decided to go sit down for a bit, after we got something to eat, and wait for the rave to start. So that's what we did. Me and my bud took some E (which didn't do ANYTHING to us, by the way), and sat down with the girl for like 2 hours, waiting for the rave. Then all of a sudden, there were like a thousand people walking by us. We stood up, and saw that a bunch of cops in riot gear were swinging sticks at the crowd, making them get away from the stage and back to their tents (the main stage and the small stage were both set on fire). So we got up and started walking back. There was this dude running through the crowd, followed by 3 police ... they tackled him to the ground ... it was crazy. The vandalism continued ... one of the big trailors (about 20 feet long) was being smashed to peices ... all the windows were being broken. Then they decided it'd be cool to push it over. Just as it was about to go over, some guy threw a garbage can at it. He went to pick it up, and the trailor fell over on top of him!! Holy shit ... it was the scariest sight I've ever seen in my life. If the dude wasn't dead, which he probably was, he'll be paralized for life for sure. They lifted up the trailor, and the cops started swinging their sticks again, forcing us away from him. Wow. So we continued back to our tent ... met up with some guy who broke into an ATM machine and stole $2500 ... he gave us $20 each, which was kinda cool. :) Fires all over the place ... tents being set ablaze, transport trucks set on fire, peices of the wall used as wood for all the fires ... it was getting WAY outta hand. We finally made it back to our tents, and right across the path there was a hardware store set up ... it was being busted and broken into, and people were stealing everything from there, too. When we got back to our tent, the person who we got a ride down with was gone, but she had left a note on our door saying to meet us at her car. So we packed up, and left. About 45 minutes later, we made it to her car, but she wasn't there. We sat down and waited. 2 hours passed. We were getting scared that she was hurt or something bad. But she finally made it, saying she got lost, and we were outta there. We took a few wrong turns, but finally made it to the highway and back home. Got to the train station at 10 in the morning ... our bus was leaving at 6:00, so we slept in the station until we boarded, and came back home. Whew. What a weekend. Overall, I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10. It was nothing what we expected, which was probably why I rated it so low 'cause I had such high expectations, but I still had an ok time. Hope everyone else out there who went had fun and is in perfect health. Sorry for such a long e-mail! Just had to put my weekend in writing before I forgot about it. :) (And by the way, I didn't proofread this e-mail, so if there are mistakes, just bear with them.) :) Take care everyone!
