Her performance was AWESOME. I like how she changed the ending slightly too. I was in awe the first time, now I'm speechless the 2nd time! Oh an unhappier note, my tape that I spent SOOOO long recording different Jewel performances, is ruined! I had EVERY Jewel appearance on that tape, and somehow it is messed up. It won't rewind or fastforward anymore, and when you press play, it's just the snow. I'm so upset! I lost everything!!!! Sigh, well, anyway, I hope you all enjoyed the show as much as I did! They had The Rusted Roots and Steve Poltz as the start up groups, they were okay but Jewel was wonderful. She played a lot from her sprit album, her pieces of you album and a couple songs from her new album which she's still working on. (Just to let you know, it seems like Jewel's going rock and roll for her new album, she was jammin'!) We got her to come back for and encore and at the end she yodeled for us! It's another one of those 5 page posts where the little scrolly thing just never seems to get to the bottom. Sorry? Aiight, first of all, Jones Beach was my first ever concert. I personally think it was amazing, but that's just my opinion :-) We got there early, after getting a bit turned around getting to the parking lot, gave food to the food bank, and walked around for a bit before going in to our seats. We sat (Section 1, Row G) and we scoped out the stage and everything. Then about 5 minutes after we sat down, Jade (Tiny Angel) came up to us and introduced herself. WoW! My first EDA meeting!! :-) Then, Rusted Root came on. They were pretty good. However, I was not all that interested in them because I was sooooo excited about seeing Jewel. My eyes began wandering, and I guess so did Keith's, because he soon told me to look over to the side of the stage. I took my binoculars, and glanced over to the side. And there, in khakis, a grey tank top, and a cowboy hat, was Jewel. I guess she was getting photos taken of her, because she was posing in front of the water. She was talking and laughing with the photographer. Then, she looked up at the audience, and waved. Of course, we waved back, and that made me happy enough to not complain (much) through Rusted Root. They finished, and woohoo, we had a 15 minute intermission (gr), Then Steve came on. He did some songs, some which were pretty amusing, others I wasn't paying attention to, and then he called some girl up on to the stage to have a glass of wine. Can anyone tell me why? She gave him a kiss, and slipped him some tongue, so Steve got his roadie, I think, onstage, who was kind of along in his years, and asked her to kiss him too. So she did, oh boy did she! Then, there was a 30 minute intermission (to which a man in front of us loudly complained about. TeeHee... I hear ya man!) Finally, we heard Near You Always, and the lights came on, and there was Jewel. She had changed from her cowboy outfit, and was wearing a long pink skirt that had zippers on the sides, and it was unzipped up to her thigh. She was wearing a grey tank top, and black sandals. She sang Deep Water, and What Simple is True. I don't really recall the set list, but I know she did mostly everything on the other steeliest. Jupiter was amazing (I finally Heard it Rachel!!!) and Down So Long blew me away. She told all the stories that she did in New Jersey, and she messed up a little in Pieces of you, again with the second verse. She just stopped and said that she forgot the words though, and then went on. She Yodeled at the end, and that was really amazing. Then, Jewel was done, and I had to leave. But, after not dying while getting out of the parking lot, on the way home, we heard Jupiter on the radio. Ah, that finished my night, making it totally awesome. Ok, I'll stop boring anyone who's reading this (by the way, thanks!) Take care everyone, bye bye!! Hey, While I was watching (ahem) Rusted Root with my binoculars, I saw a girl in an EDA shirt. She had a purple bookbag, and medium legnth brown hair, i think. She was sitting in orchestra, center, i think around the 7th row. I just wanted to know who you were. Aiight, bye bye! A few minutes ago, around 1:50 AM (central time), Kurt Loder came on the screen for an MTV News Brief. The first little story was about Jewel's new video for "Jupiter" (which will be debuting Monday on MTV on "Making the Video" at 10:30 PM ET). She gave a little background on the song and told a little about the video. It will include Sanskrit symbols and symbols for entiquity (sp?). I hope everyone's looking forward to the debut, and if there's anyone who doesn't have MTV, I am willing to tape the show, just email me back. I just wanted to write to say how much I loved Jewel's show at Jones Beach, tonight! Jewel was spectacular, and every song was a masterpiece. She sang all of her hits, as well as a lot of EDA favorites, such as "Angel Standing By," "Deep Water," and "What's Simple Is True." I loved how she re-worked "Who Will Save Your Soul." And her stage presence was amazing. It totally blew away her Papillion Tour, IMO. All the stories she told we all have either heard before or she told at Storytellers, though. And as for Rusted Root and Steve Poltz, I thought they performed wonderfully, and I like both, however, they were on WAY TOO LONG. They shouldn't call it Jewel's Spirit Tour, they should call it Jewel, Rusted Root and Steve Poltz's Spirit Tour. Like I said, I like both Rusted Root and Steve Poltz, but I think an hour for Rusted Root and close to an hour for Steve goes a little beyond opening acts. I think those classify as mini-concerts. LOL. And plus tack onto that a 15-minute intermission between Rusted Root and Steve and then a 30-minute intermission between Steve and Jewel, you get a little antsy waiting for Jewel to come on. And I felt so sorry for Steve. The audience wasn't kind, though they seemed to be OK with Rusted Root. Anyway, overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the night. Even ran into a fellow EDA (Pete), and spotted another sitting a few rows ahead of me, though I didn't say hello. Oh, and they put that new Spirit shirt on sale that we voted on for the free stickers. They used the low-res pic of Jewel, but it's still a decent shirt. At any rate, that's all I have to say for now. :-) Jewel is better than ever!! - -Matt, The Philosopher Angel P.S. Oh, and I forgot one more thing about tonight's Jones Beach concert. Did anyone know the name of the band that was performing on the mini-stage outside the bathrooms before Rusted Root came on the mainstage? Their sound was reminiscent of a lot of Sarah McLachlan's work. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 06:33:09 EDT From: JeWeLzKeWL@aol.com Subject: * Jewel was awesome at Jones Beach!! Hey everyone! Jewel's concert here in NY was amazing... I liked it so much. Now what am I gonna look forward to? LOL. I want to go to another one.. The wait was long, waiting for Rusted Root to end (What was up with that girl playing that piece of metal? LOL) Oh well.. they were Ok.. and then a 15 min intermission =P.. but everyone wanted to see Jewel.. Then we have to wait for Steve Poltz to be over, and then you think its time.. and the lights go on for a 30 min intermission!!:*(. Finally.. the lights go totally off and you hear Jewel start to sing Near You Always acapella.. Before this, my mom called Jones Beach and they said if I made her a sign, I could give it to someone during her set to give it to her. So I went there and they said they'd give it to her after the concert. The concert was great, it was very nicely divided between Spirit songs (mostly at the beginning.. she did Deep Water, Whats Simple Is True, Hands, and then Jupiter).. also life Uncommon which was really good,,and then towards the middle she did some Pieces of You songs.. and then some really good non album songs.. like Grey Matter, Down, Love me just leave me alone, the song she wrote for her father.. and some other one, im not sure...She went back to Spirit songs and did Down So Long.. and from Pieces of You she did You were meant for me(and Steve said what he wouldve wanted the line to be), Pieces of You (i was surprised, i never heard her sing that.. i looked at some set lists), Foolish Games.. and some super long version of WWSYS.. and she started saying stuff about a kitty going meow.. ?! it was cute tho, lol Anyway, she came back and did Absense of Fear and Angel Standing By which were both really great.. and Angel Standing By brought tears in my eyes because she sounded so nice and thats my favorite Pieces of You song..Then at the end she yodeled for us, LOL that was so cooL! I was getting kinda excited when it was over, just thinking, the guy said he'd give it to her after the concert.. so she could be holding my sign right now! (I thought) wow.. i drew 2 pictures of her on my sign (with charcoal and pastels) and on the back I wrote a long letter. Wow, I really hope she read it. Anyway, I went to sleep with my Jewel Spirit Shirt and when I woke up, I checked that I was wearing it and it wasnt just a dream, LOL ;) If anyone else has any comments they want to send me about this concert.. plz e-mail me *Jade* - -Tiny Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 07:21:33 EDT From: JeWeLzKeWL@aol.com Subject: * NJC: Help me, please! Hi Angels, I am pleased to announce to the lists at large what the So Cal local list has been planning for the month of July. A week from today (Sat July 31st) a stalwart group of us So Cal EDAs (and friends) are going to descend upon the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank and volunteer for the day. This proves to be both a fun and rewarding effort as the Foodbank is always in need of helping hands. The Los Angeles Regional FoodBank is a 55,000 sq ft distribution center that supports thru food donations and other programs over 810 different charities in the Los Angeles area. Our main activities will be checking for food viability, cleaning, and stacking foodstuffs (nothing to intensive) and we will all be working together. We plan to arrive at the Foodbank at 12pm and depart at 4pm. Also, for those interested, a group of us will be heading down to San Diego the night b4 for some live music. Afterwards, those that wish to head to my (Jason's) house for continued merriment and eventual sleep are welcome and so invited to do so (email me for details). This group will be caravaning from my house to the FoodBank. If you are interested in going to either day or both, but lack a ride (or are willing to drive others)...please be sure to contact Lori(larthur@Exchange.FULLERTON.EDU) as she is coordinating that aspect. The foodbank is located just off the 10 fwy at 1734 East 41st Street Los Angeles CA 90058-1502 Phone # (323) 234 3030 Find the 10 fwy (accessible from the 91,101,5,60,etc..consult maps.yahoo.com for driving instructions to the 10 fwy/address listed above) heading toward Alameda st on 10 west Take the exit for ALAMEDA STREET. Merge onto E 14TH ST. Turn LEFT onto S ALAMEDA ST. Turn RIGHT onto E 41ST ST. on 10 east Take the ALAMEDA STREET exit. Turn RIGHT onto S ALAMEDA ST. Turn RIGHT onto E 41ST ST ***NOTE*** To those traveling the 710....Yahoo lists an alternate route not involving the 10fwy...This route involves (in my opinion) too many surface street changes and extended travel over them...please be very aware of this fact...the 10fwy is very close to the Foodbank and nearly due north of the Foodbanks position...I suggest this as the quickest, easiest way in and out. Lets be safe driving in LA :) If anyone has questions of any kind about any aspect of this endeavor please feel free to call me at home (909) 245 2417. Otherwise, email ME or the SoCal list and I shall do my utmost to answer. To Sum Up Friday the 30th Excursion to SD for live music Sat the 31st Volunteer Day @ LA Regional Foodbank Noon to 4pm :) Possible continuing Gathering on Sun night 4 VH1 Storytellers Premiere I hope that all the SoCal EDAs that have the time or inclination come out for what promises to be a crowning moment in EDA activities here in Southern California :) Lori and I hope to see you all there and thank you for your continued support and friendship.
