Today's Subjects: ----------------- * Houston and New Orleans trip [Amber ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 19:59:08 -0500 From: Amber Subject: * Houston and New Orleans trip I got back yesterday evening from seeing the Houston and New Orleans shows. Saturday morning my sister Mindi and I (Amias, she is my sister not my cousin LOL!) checked into the La Quinta. Derrick and his cousin picked us up from there and brought us to the park. Now I had met Luna and Dennis the weekend before and already knew them, but Mindi was a little surprised when she walked through the trees to find an angel playing a guitar (ummm...that was Luna with wings!). And she immediately figured out that Dennis never meets a stranger when he immediately had her in plywood cow roping training. LOL! Well the picnic was fun and we could hear Jewel's soundcheck from the other side of the lake. It was quite interesting. Well, now to the show....I was on the 4th row center pit with Mindi. This was amazing seating! Most of the others had great seats too. Luna and Amias were 5th row center (in the very center) and Derrick and his cousin were in 5th row center on the left. Dennis and Amy went to find their seats early and realized that their uncovered center seats were blocked by the soundbooth tent (I think that's what it was). So Mr. Smoothtalker himself convinces someone in charge of tickets at the pavillion to give them better tickets. Well, better they most certainly were! They were just a few rows behind the pit on the left side! Geez! I didn't even know you could talk someone into that! Oh well, if it can possibly be done, Dennis will be the one to do it. ;-) Anyway, we met 2 EDA girls (well at least one was an EDA, the other I think was a friend of hers) before the concert started. This was Heather and Kim(I think). They hadn't been able to find us at the park unfortunately. Ok, so the concert starts and Steve is up there singing. Now, I must admit that I've only heard his album once (I borrowed it from a friend about 2 weeks ago) but I think he's really good. Some people weren't as responsive at first to him, but after he got through a few songs, they really seemed to be with him. It was great. During one of his songs (forgive me but I don't remember the name) I notice these kids running out on stage. I'm like "Mindi, look!". I was surprised that they had gotten to go out there. They were all wet and stuff which was not unusual because it was pouring rain (no I wasn't wet, I was 4th row center in the covered section...ok, had to rub it in... hehe). Now, I hadn't noticed that one of the "kids" up there was Jewel, but then (and I don't remember exactly how) I was looking at the girl in the khaki pants dripping wet and realized that that was Jewel! Her brother was up there too. But we didn't know it was her brother yet. Anyway, Derrick told most of the stuff about the concert but he didn't mention how I got to go up to the stage during "Foolish Games" to lay a gift at Jewel's feet (an angel beanie baby bear). That was the most amazing rush I think I've ever experienced! I looked up at her as she sang and layed the bear down. I'm just glad I didn't melt into a little puddle of liquid! Well, after the concert I tried to find the others who had already walked out (I was at the stage awhile). I couldn't find anyone so my sister and I started asking security at the gates if they'd seen a girl with wings (well, Luna, you must admit everyone noticed...LOL) because that would be the biggest distinguishing characteristic of any of the EDA's...hehe. They all said that they hadn't recently but they knew who I was talking about. How could they not? LOL! Anyway, we ended up finding everyone and went to eat at Denny's. Some girls there started talking to us about the concert (they weren't EDA's but were at the concert) and seemed to think that we were just so cool. They even took pictures of us. Go figure. Well, that night we hung out in the motel room and roped Woody and listened to Luna play Jewel songs on her guitar. She sings REALLY well. Ok...to the New Orleans concert. Derrick already mentioned the trip over there. I must say that deep discussions with Dennis are like talking to a brick wall. Sorry, Dennis, we still love you. ;-) And sleeping arrangements are quite difficult when Derrick is around. j/k. We still love you too, Derrick. ;-) We finally got to the venue and like Derrick said, we could have gotten a video camera in if we wanted to! I could have set it in my lap, zoomed in a bit and had a GREAT concert video! If only we had known. Derrick got the audio of it...of course me screaming throughout the concert is quite loud as you can hear every word I say. Hmmmm....oh well. It really gets loud and clear during "Life Uncommon" since I just freak out for that song. Hehehe. And every time the lights flash on, Luna, Amy, Dennis, and myself jumped up and down and waved at each other from across the venue! That was fun but the people around us must have thought we were mad because no one else even budged around us the whole time. It was like a sea of stones I was sitting in. Oh well, that's their loss. Ok, now I just want to know who the guy was in the blue EDA shirt that I met walking by the exit after the concert. I asked if he was an EDA and he said "yeah" without missing a step...HE KEPT WALKING! I called after him "I am too!" but he was unresponsive and kept going! Who are you and why did you ignore me? Oh well. Alright....you heard from Derrick about our little adventures after the concert with Steve Poltz and Jewel's band (and younger brother and his g/f). I must say that they are all so cool. Steve is quite friendly and I really enjoyed hanging out with him. We were out till after 4am! In one bar, I was playing video poker with him and some guy behind me started trying to hit on me. I don't know what it was that triggered it but Steve acted jealous of the guy and made sure I wasn't going to be with that guy and then asked me to kiss him(Steve). I kind of paused at first because I wasn't sure what to think. Then I just decided "what the hell" and kissed him. How many times does that happen? Well, I must say again that Steve is really cool and I really enjoyed hanging out with him. It was odd though because you'd think I'd be like "Oh my god this is a star" but I wasn't. He was just a really cool person who happens to be talented and writes and sings cool songs. And I'm dead serious about that. It's nice to be able to tell people about getting to hang out with him and the band, and going to a private party and private back rooms, etc but it was like being with friends because that's how they acted. They didn't act like stars. They weren't stuck up or all over themselves. It was just amazing to see how down to earth and fun they really are. I really wish we could have had breakfast with him the next morning like he'd asked but he really was hungover pretty bad. Later Derrick, Luna, and I went to his hotel and called his room and left him a message. We had to go so we couldn't hang out later. I assume that Amy and Dennis did meet up with him again because he said to call again about 3pm but we had to leave then. Oh well, maybe we'll meet again another time. He's really nice. The trip home was fun too. When Derrick doesn't have to compete with Dennis for talking time, he really opens up. ;-) So Derrick, Luna, and I have some very interesting conversations. Derrick I must admit is a really great guy. Well, that's all I have to say for now. And as soon as Luna left my house Tuesday morning I felt a little pang of lonliness. First we left Dennis and Amy. Then Derrick left my house Monday night. Then Luna Tuesday around noon. So now all the excitement and fun of the weekend came to a dead halt and I suddenly felt it. I can't wait to get together with all of you guys again! And I can't wait to get the copies of the Houston and N.O. concert tapes we made so that I can partially re-live the fun! Well, goodbye for now. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #406 ***************************
