So, Dennis Harris, Amy Neufeld, Amias Maldonado, and i finally got out of austin and headed for reunion arena in dallas. the ride was pretty good, except i get a little bitchy if i am not on time, and i have learned EDAs are never on time. we stopped at the czech bakery in west and got these spicy sausage chubbies. well, i got two and dennis was a brat because he only got one and whined that i wouldn't split my second one with him :-) Amias and Dennis thought everything was so god-damned funny! :-0 We finally got to dallas and found my friends' apartment where we were staying. my friends were so nice to let us stay with them, they let three strangers sleep in their place and they aren't even EDAs! so we headed off toward the venue. we met up with the texas foodbank woman and guarded the big red barrels of food. hardly anyone brought food. BRING FOOD to you concerts, sweeties! but, like amias said, we then met the sweetest bunch of EDAs! first we met Rowdy, who is the nicest person i have ever met in my life. then Corey, who made this fabulous backpack out of eda shirts and old striped towels, Courtney, who was COMPLETELY in love with steve poltz, Laura, who was cute and shy (i hope we didn't scare her) and their friend who wanted to go sit down (i can't remember your name, sorry)! all of these girls are so pretty and excited about jewel, steve, edas, gatherings, etc. it made amias and i realize how cynical we were. i wish texas wasn't so damn big because then we could all hang out everynight! speaking of cynicism. ok. i admit it. i was kind of on the verge of really not liking jewel's music very much anymore based on spirit and recent television performances. after the show, dennis and i got in one of our first big sibling squabbles over bumpkinness and snobbiness. i obviously am both. i have a major problem with some of jewel's imature lyrics, but then i can act like a 6th grader jumping up and down like an obsessed fan about another song. so i was a bit worried that i wouldn't like the shows. boy was i surprised. so we got to our floor seats. we didn't bring any cameras in because the security was pretty tight, and no one was recording the show. if you did record the show, please contact me so we can trade. steve comes on stage. steve is the most amazing live performer. songs that stood out the most were "i love ya," "silver lining" with steve (the pianist) and doug on harmony, and doug's bluesy interludes, "the chair song" with dallas-tailored lyrics, and of course "the star wars song." i screamed so loud during the go chewy go part that i had the worst sore throat after the show. during the intermission we met an EDA john, who was sitting right in front of us. his girlfriend was really cool too, she even went up to take a picture of her for him! then jewel came on. sean hooks, you would have been proud. first her magnetic voice captured the room with near you always. she was in the dark for the first part of the song, and then they flooded her with purple light, and then a crisp white light illuminated her. she was smiling. she had on simple colored makeup, fresh fluffed hair, long red dress with patches of embroidery and spagetti straps, and hippie-green pumps. very old-school. i really really tried not to pass out. i was sitting there stunned, so surprised that she looked so good, basking in that impression that inspired me so intensely many years ago. i was very impressed with deep water, also, she even left out the grape gum on the ground line (which i hate). the entire show was very enjoyable. she seemed to be singing lullabies individually to everyone in the arena. grey matter was very very slow, however, and dragged a bit. morning song was perfect and we thought of tessa. and she didn't even play it in houston, but she did in new orleans! YWMFM brought tears to my eyes and before the song she didn't tell the mexico story (which i admit i am sick of) but she told steve's version of her cute girly line and he sang it, "i break the eggs and stab the yolks with my fork, i can't believe that bitch is taking me to court." barcelona was quite impressive with steve the pianist jamming out under the spotlight. she kind of uses this song as a transition between the acoustic part and the rocking part. during the chorus, she spreads her arms out and they flood the stage and the audience with warm tangerine colored light. i never really liked that song much, except for the graveyard line, but in concert it was very memorable. i don't like jupiter, but the uh ee ohh uhhh ee ohh part definitely started to grow on me. and if i just hum da da da during the hitler line in innocence maintained, i can appreciate the beauty of her voice on the rest of the song. i loved down so long! we all went down to the stage during this song and the rocking portion began. Do you want to sing and Down were both really good, and Love me don't leave me alone was pretty good, except where she changed the line with midgets to minions. she didn't talk much in this show. most of it was sweet and lower key, she seemed more motherly than the shows to come. she did say her new li'l catch line, "thank-ya babies" when someone screams that they love her. this makes me melt. it is so darn cute! the best part about the show was being down in front during the rockin part, a few feet from the stage. i felt like i was at a club seeing jewel put on a rock show. very different from the jewel i saw several years ago. after the show, amy, dennis, amias, rowdy and i went to cafe brazil and even though my throat was sore i really enjoyed the chicken crepes. we visited for several hours and convinced rowdy to go to the houston show, even though he wasn't going to get any sleep at all! and so we went to my friends' place and camped on the floor. and this is the end of the first leg of the journey. part two coming soon!
