This is funny in parts :-) Mike :-) ****** http://www.woodstock.com Gate Crashing? A Reality Check with Ken Donohue, director of security operations for Woodstock 99. By Elizabeth Chanley The harsh reality is that when you get 250,000 people together, some will try and ruin things for everyone. With that in mind, heading up the security for Woodstock 99 are two of the toughest, most experienced law enforcement pros in the business former NYC Police Chief, Ken Donohue and former Dade County Police Chief, Dan Flynn. For those people talking about crashing the gates at Woodstock 99, Ken Donohue and the security team of Woodstock 99 have a dose of reality for you. Q: So what did you do before heading up security for Woodstock 99? A: "I spent 33 years as Chief of the New York City Police Department, where I oversaw a staff of 7100 and handled security for events like concerts, ball games, riots and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade." Q: How tough is it to organize all the security for an event like Woodstock 99? A: "Compared to my old job it's a piece of cake." Q: Whats the deal with all this talk about gatecrashing? A: It's not going to happen and anyone who thinks they can get into Woodstock without a ticket is in for a very rude awakening." Q: Well, a lot of people out there seem to think they're going to get in without a ticket. A: "Well, a lot of people are wrong." Q: You sound pretty confident. A: "I am." Q: Why? A: "People seem to think that this concert site is just some big field, but this is not '94 or '69. We're talking about a former military base. This place was built to be defended against a full military attack. I think it can keep out a few attempts at gatecrashing." Q: What will happen if someone tries to jump the fence? A: "First of all, there isn't a 'fence.' There are FENCES. Big fences, lots of fences and all of them are backed with steel girders. There are a series of fences and perimeter roads that surround the entire 6 ½ mile perimeter of the site." Q: On a site that large, how will you catch potential gatecrashers? A: "First, the perimeter of the site will be manned by hundreds of security personnel, including New York State Troopers, the Department of Defense and NEAD (North East Air Defense) and let me just tell, you these guys don't fool around. Second, if someone even managed to make it over the fences, they're going to have to walk more than a mile to reach the concert area and there's no way they won't be spotted from one of our observation towers." Q: O.K., what will happen if someone does try to jump the fences? A: "Well, after I kick their ass (laughs) actually, we'll catch them and they'll be arrested and charged with trespassing. We have a holding cell on site that can detain over 200 people and we'll have district attorneys and judges on site 24 hours a day to process any charges. Not to mention, parts of the site are federal property which means you run the risk of federal prosecution if you try to sneak in. I don't know about you, but $150.00 is a bargain to see over 40 bands I can't even imagine who would risk going to jail to save a few bucks." Q: How many security people will be on site? A: "There will be over 3100 security, law enforcement and support staff manning the show. Actually, security for the show is already on site." Q: How will you know if someone doesn't have a ticket for the show? A: "Everyone will wear a wristband for the entire festival, if you aren't wearing one, you'll be ejected immediately." Q: Why are there so many rules about what you can and can't bring into Woodstock? A: "Because it's our job to take care of the safety and security of ALL the people at the show. Let's face it, if you trip and fall on a metal tent stake or get hit in the head with a flying can of peas, you're not going to have too much fun at Woodstock." Q: How will you make sure people don't bring in the wrong things? A: "There will be security check points when you enter the show and when you enter the camping area. Everything brought into the show will be searched and passed through metal detectors." Q: What will happen if you bring things that aren't permitted at Woodstock? A: "Well, you can either take it back to your car, surrender it, or donate it to charity like food items that aren't allowed in will be donated to food banks. Of course, if you try to sneak in contraband, you'll be arrested." Q: Explain "contraband." A: "That would be anything that is illegal in the state of New York drugs, weapons, etc. There are local, state and federal law enforcement officers on site and they don't intend to mess around." Q: Why is there so much security on hand? A: "There are several reasons, we want to protect the ticket-holders and make sure they aren't cheated out of their investment and we want to make sure that everyone has the most fun possible. In order for both of those things to happen, we needed to make sure we had a large, well-trained security force on hand who could anticipate and handle any possible situation. Woodstock is the best concert in the world and part of being the best isn't just having the best bands, part of it is also being the safest, most organized and the most fun. That's Woodstock 99." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 22:42:27 EDT From: Sip5Alive@aol.com Subject: * Re: Jewel Taping A Must!!
