Today's Subjects: ----------------- * Random Question (Jewel guitar picks) [Phillip Jacques Subject: * Random Question (Jewel guitar picks) This question will probably seem rather insignificant in the midst of all this deep, philosophical discussion about exactly how much Jewel has changed over the years, but I'll throw it out there anyway. :) Did Jewel used to have guitar picks for sale through her website? I seem to remember that she did a while back, but they aren't there anymore. If she did, what did they look like? I am just wondering because at the Irvine show, I got Jewel's guitar pick, and I was just wondering if there was anything that distinguished it from the ones that possibly used to be for sale thru the site. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. If you listen closely & try to isolate it from all the NEW instruments in there, you are bound to feel the soul in it. a few list memebers have mentioned that when performed live, the songs from "spirit" seem to take new form & has more appeal to them. maybe it's because of the fact that any music is meant to be heard that way, esp. jewel's. <<< the way she looks & dresses>> i don't have anything against it. the exterior doesn't really represent the interior. "do not judge a book by it cover". <<< is there anything positive >>> there is. the fact that people aren't the same. they will always have difference in their opinions, preferences, & perceptions. it would really be a dull world if we all think alike & dress alike. - - rvn http://noone.tsx.org [ a shameless self promotion brought to you by me] ' have a li'l faith in me ' - --- as performed by jewel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 17:48:04 -0700 From: "li'l waternymph" Subject: * uhh ohh, luna's getting excited.... > ImLauraS@aol.com wrote: >Race Car Driver- with band. this was the first time ive heard this. it rocked > WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO! i thought this song was long gone! she played racecar driver! WOW! ok. anyway, for those of you that don't know anything is going in texas, the cauldron's brewing! this past saturday dennis harris, tessa harris, derrick, amber and myself had a total kick-ass day. the real reason we got together was supposed to be to plan the remaining details for the houston event. oh, we kinda did that, but.... 1. we roped the woody. you guys just wait till you meet woody. he is so cute i made him sit in my lap while amber played the the guitar and sang us a beautiful song she wrote. 2. we played the guitar. for hours. tessa made us play morning song, uhh, what was it, sixty times? :-) and we even played racecar driver for derrick. 3. we finally met derrick. after three years of hearing from him on the list, talking to him on the phone, etc. we met him. and girls, watch out he is a REAL LIFE racecar driver. we all had our suspicions, the whole time, but he is such a sensitive man of the nineties, we love him anyway. :-) 4. we ate fried ice-cream! yup, can't get this damn close to mexico and not have it, but dennis and i were the only ones who had ever had it! so we called up hula hut, actually dennis called up hula hut and went MAD CRAZY on the phone. he convinced the manager that he was rob hill, one of his employees and suddenly we were invited to bring woody, the plywood cow, to the restaurant! 5. TOM PROVEN was with us in spirit, and lip! beware eda's that don't go where you're supposed to, we'll getcha! and boy did we get him good. we cuddled up to the cutest picture of him! i sang him a lullabye. and tessa, well pictures will be posted later! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha 6. we got pizza and pretended we were in the real world. seriously, we were all sitting around my table, lit candles and all, talking about religion and spirituality, etc. dennis and amber can both really talk! let me tell you, i though i talked a lot until i met them. 7. we bonded. big surprise, ehhh? geez, that's never happened at an eda event. we even told secrets, after tessa and dennis left, of course! so, for all of you that are going to the dallas, houston, and nawlins shows, stay tuned. there is more to come on the big ass tx-la angel road rules! love luna ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 16:22:03 PDT From: Erin Benoit Subject: * Review and Set list of July 2nd, GM Place concert Halo Angels!!! I am so happy that I finally got to hear what every one of you has been raving about. I attended my very first live Jewel concert with opening act of none other than Steve Poltz on July 2nd, 1999 at GM Place in Vancouver, BC, Canada. First of all I want to say "Hi" to Sarah and Tony who I also got to meet before the concert. (even though I was late...heehee) And you thought I talked alot then...well, here I post! Actually I will keep it to only Jewel and Steve related stuff. Steve's Set was as follows: - -Now's not the right time for love (Title anyone?) - -Ten Chances - -I love you, I want you, what do you want for an encore? (This was when he asked a girl up on stage and opened by saying that he is trying to learn french but he only knows a few things like 'Ferme la bouche' shut your mouth, and I love you, I want you, what do you want for an encore etc...so he put them all into a song. And it was so cute! But the girl just stood there sipping her wine when he was singing right to her face "Fereme la bouche goddammit and give me a kiss!" He finally got a peck on the cheek from her. ) - -Everything About You (intro'd by saying that he wrote it for his good friend who is in heaven now and dedicated that song to everyone who has freckles. Is this Jessica by any chance? Anyone? ) - -Silver Lining (with a great intro that explained a lot about who Jon Kruk is...etc... "I'll take my ball and go home!") - -The Great Mystery - -Hollistan Street (intro'd saying that he wa born in Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia and that his cousins always bug him cause he can't play hockey so he said he's going to learn how next summer. He said that he wrote this song about the place he lived here in Canada...very nice sweet song) - -Dog-Doo Blues (said you can buy the Answering Machine CD which is a Cd of like 56 tracks all 45 seconds long cause it was taped into a Sony Answering machine and this was track 48 or something. He even said the "BEEP" at the end of it...very cute song.) - -Star Wars (the usual...got the Chewy noises out of us...they are hard for someone who like me has never seen the shows) Unfortunately I didn't get any of his set on the tape I made. The darn thing just didn't want to record for some reason. And I was sitting within reaching distance of a Security Guard guy (ooops...forgot about that part when I got front row tickets...not floor but first row in the first level) So I didn't want to be too obvious. I waited until the intermission and checked the tape and so I only got all of Jewel's set. Jewel Set: - -Near You Always - -Deep Water (a little different style to this one.) - -What's Simple is True - -Hands (She sang "If I could tell the world just one thing it would be.." and then stepped away from the mic and let us sing the next line...when it turned out sucky she goes "that was a little anemic...let's try it again" We did much better the second time when we knew what she expected.) - -Jupiter (opened by saying when she gets bored she changes things so she changed this song) - -YWMFM (with SUPER EXTENDED VERSION of whale-watching story...talked about why women tell men they look manly when we don't mean it etc...and told about breaking in to Rosalita's Deluxe Resort, and how Steve nor her smoke pot and Steve is catholic and likes to stand beside anything illegal because he gets his own private catholic high from it. Very expressive story with all the accents and voices of the characters and very dramatic pauses. etc...Also everyone in the audience choose this quieter moment to get Jewel's attention and she handled it bery well...she was so hilarious copying the grunts and yells from the guys, making fun of a guy who 'got' a very obvious joke..."Rambo Jewe!" And then saying "Thank you Babies" when some girls screamed in unison.) - -I thought I Saw You Last Night (with Steve...they got so close together the audience felt the connection between them and 'wooed' to see if they would kiss but they didn't. Very close though. Great song!) - -Innocence Maintained (with a very cute German Interview story. She got the accent perfect and it was very funny!) - -Enter From the East - -Morning Song (my tape shut off here and I didn't get it back on until the middle of the next song) - -Grey Matter - -Barcelona (very good! They also let us take pictures at the concert, or at least didn't stop us...and I got a good picture of Jewel when she sang "fly" and raised her arms out to the side and it was also the picture in the paper that next day...of course close up and professional. The article was sucky though....I'll post it later) - -Life Uncommon (I cried...let's just say that! Very Jazzed up at the end and she got very emotional) - -Foolish Games (I think even she was crying on this one!) - -Down So Long (regular rocked out version with no real exciting orgasmic stuff though.) - -Down (can never hear the words on this song...the music is too loud and rocky! But it was great and got the crowd going) - -Love me, Just leave me Alone (At this point the security guards started letting the people in the back of the floor seating some forward and a whole bunch of people from the balcony ran down and got turned away. But then near the end of the song they had some room left at the stage and asked me and my boyfriend who were sitting in the first row on the next level if we wanted to go up and we jumped at the chance. I made lots of eye-contact with Steve but Jewel wasn't really looking our way much. I held up an EDA shirt but I don't think she noticed.) - -Who Will Save Your Soul (The most incredible display of vocal range I have ever heard from Jewel or any other performaer. It was amazing when one couldn't tell Doug's guitar from Jewel's voice in their little completition to out improvise eachother. IT was great. When Jewel messed up or couldn't get something she tried and then just laughed! Her laugh is contagious! And she won I think because Doug couldn't copy her voice more than she couldn't copy his playing. Amzing! And of course I finally got to hear the kitty cat thing. Very cute. Also she sang a lot of stuff Jamaican style! It was awesome!) Encore: - -Absence of Fear (Jewel seperated each pitch when she sang 'of' it sounded very cool! She also did that in WWSYS) - -Angel Standing By (she explained to me...cause I was yelling for her to yodel, that she couldn't yodel cause her voice was thrashed but she would sing this song instead because she believes in Angels. etc,... and she could barely hit the high notes and hold them...her voice was pretty rouch but somehow she made it sound so good. She had to clear her throat between verses everytime though.) All in all it was the BEST NIGHT OF MY ENTIRE LIFE! After the concert we walked around the building to see if we could get Jewel and Steve coming out to their buses and ask for autographs etc...and sure enough when we found the buses Jewel's was running, the band's was not so Jewel just came out with her little group of 'protector people' and security and gave the little group that was waiting there including us a wave and got on the bus. Most of the crowd left at that point but me and my boyfriend and a few other girls stuck around and we were waiting to see the band and Steve come out when my boyfriend calmly mentioned that the bass guitar player was standing right behind us talking to the other girls. And I looked and said. "Nah, that's not him...he is so much younger than that. " But it was Doug Pettibone and he looks older not on stage and when wearing a ball cap so you can't see his hair. So we talked to him and I mentioned that I was an EDA and said that I wanted to talk to Steve but he said he had already left. Then he asked what we were doing tongiht etc...I said partying...hoping that they would come get a drink with us...the other girls were probably around 16 years old. I also showed him this little Angel Suncatcher that I made (some of you already have one from me.) and he said he could put it on his guitar...but then asked if I'd like to give it to someone else, and I asked he could give it to Jewel and he said he'd make sure she got it! Yeah! I'm so happy! I want all the EDA's including Jewel to have one. Anyways, then Steve that piano player guy came over and talked to us and I asked him about piano and stuff and how long he's been playing for etc...and if he has any tips for learning Jewel songs. He just said to listen to the album and pick it up...and practice lots! Then he when Doug went to put my Angel thing on the bus the girls started to leave and he said "Where are you going? Steve Poltz is on his way out" So we stuck around and sure enough a couple minutes later out comes Steve with a couple of blond girls and a few guys and they are posing for pictures and laughing and my boyfriend said he thought they were smoking a joint? But that's not confirmed, and Steve was just going to walk right on by us with a little wave like Jewel did when Doug stepped in and said (pointint at ME) that someone wanted to talk to him. So I motioned to him to come closer and he did and I talked to him for a minute and then while staring into those wonderfully charming eyes I asked him if I could give him a hug and he said "Let's make it a good one" and he gave me a long, sort of intimate hug and then I asked him to sign my CD cover and he did and then the girls quickly took out their ticket stubs and borrowed my felt pen and Steve apologised for the messy autographs as it was pouring rain and the marker wasn't working right. Then I was sort of looking of into the distance as he signed the other girls ticket stubs and my bf sort of pushed me and I look up and Steve had his cheek leaning out to me and my bf quickly said that "He just asked you for a kiss!" So I came him a kiss on the cheek and then I asked him if he could sing the Chair song for me as he didn't in concert and so him and Doug sort of did a quick little line from the song a capella. Then with a wave and a blown kiss goodbye they got on the bus and drove off. It was the perfect end to the perfect evening and I will never forget it for as long as I live! Smiles and I hope you enjoy the up coming concerts as much as I did!
