I lost my J-Card for the Future Folklore 1 tape, so if any one has it scanned or on the web could you email it to me (or give me a link)? Or maybe someone has an extra they could part with... I'd really appreciate it! My DSL import single is still available if anyone's interested. And as always, if you want angelfood, email me. I'm also interested in some angelfood of Jewel's recent concerts, so if you'd like to share maybe we could set something up. Thanks guys! And if anyone who is going to either the July 23rd or August 4th NJ shows- email me! I want to set up a gathering. OK, I'll leave you alone now. Take Care Emilie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 12:16:03 EDT From: Sabato229@aol.com Subject: *Record Label I think 'Spirit' is too perfect. I love the songs but I love hearing Jewel mess up a little here and there like on POY. So I was thinking... does anyone know how many records she signed on to do in the contract for Atlantic? I don't know how record companies work or anything but Jewel and her mom should go make there own label (asap.) That way Jewel can put out whatever kind of cd she likes. That being in a coffeehouse, her living room or maybe even singing in the shower. And I am sure the 2 of them have talked about it. I was thinking this cuz I personally don't like the way they (atlantic) work, they seem kind of slow w/ Jewel. How long did they wait between Hands and putting out DSL? To them it's about milking the song for all it's worth and that's understandable but I don't think Jewel would do the same. To her it's about keeping the fans happy and herself not so bored. I hope I don't enrage anyone w/ my thinking aloud; just trying to put a spin on the dicussion. Plus I thought it was a good idea ;but I'm sure things are a little complicated in that wacky business world of making money off of other people's talent. I was driving some random place which i tend to do quite often now and well after finally realizing it was here(i'm a bit slow at times) and listening to it all the way through I've realized what her music is missing compared to a few years back....Energy. or Passion. When i heard the jupiter single i felt like she was just getting up there singing the words and walking away from the mic. Her high notes sounded a bit forced not like they use to. Back in the days of WWSYS and older songs that never made it to cd but should have(my brain isn't working today) there was true passion and Energy behind those songs. I miss that passion. I didnt meat any other edas there, i left on monday morning to fly to seattle(my family and i took a big trip to see the area). We had 5TH ROW SEATS!!!! I was like 7 seats from the middle. The stage was setup just like what i read from the fisrt show. Jewel was wearing a blue tshirt and a skirt that looked a little like an apron. Anyways,,, The Setlist NOTE: This is what i could remember. They are not all in perfect order but itried to put themin oorder as best as i could. Near You Always- she sang the first verse a capella Deep Water- I dont remember if this was solo or with the band Whats Simple is True-dont remember if this was solo or with either. Hands- This one was with the band. Somewhere arounf this point she told a story about how she had woken up in a good mood that morning and had decided to go excersise. She realized that she didnt have any tennis shoes so she had to go get some. When she went to the gym there was this woman on the treadmill who looked like the bionic woman or something.it was hilarious. Jupiter- the "new version" Cold Song-solo. after she was done and the crowd was cheering she said that she was glad that theyenjoyed the deeper stuff like she did. She told a story about how she recently was doing an interview in Germany. This is the best i cna remember it: (she did a hilarious imitation of the german guy, unfortunately i cant convey it on the computer) Interviewer: So, Jewel. Is that your real name? Jewel: Yes it is. Interviewer: Jewel, Jewel: Kilcher. Kilcher is my last name. Interviewer: Sounds German,no? Jewel: actually its Swiss. Interviewer: Jewel, May I ask you a question? Jewel: This is an interview. Interviewer: In your song, Innocence Maintained, why do write 'Hitler loved little blue eyed boys and it drove him to hate'? Jewel: Ask your parents or get a book about it. Interviewer: Why do you say in your song, 'Nature has a funny way of breaking what does not bend'? What is funny about it? I donot understand. Jewel: I didnt mean haha funny i meant funny as in"isnt it ironic" So then she plays Innoncence Maintained solo Barcelona- with band YWMFM-with. did a funny thing where she held the strings for steve and he played them. LIfe Uncommon- with band. she got almost the whole crowd on its feet and clapping for this. Foolish Games.-Just with the keyboard Down So Long- with band. the crowd liked this one too. Race Car Driver- with band. this was the first time ive heard this. it rocked Down- with. having no angelfood except for a few import singles, i hadnt heard it Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - with. it took me forever to figure out what it was. i hadnt heard this before WWSYS- VERY long. the bass opening had to have been three min at least. She did the thing where doug has to imitate her voice. Everyone left the stage and they gave the picks to some people in the fornt. My brother GOT THE DRUMSTICK!!! Encore Absence of fear Angel standing by- told how it was a lullaby she wrote herself while living in her van. Chimebells- she yodelled really fast towards the end i didnt realize it was possible to do so so fast. I thought it was a great show. I hope i might can see her when she comes closer (note the er) to me. also, any sc edas out there? or am i the only one? Pease" Subject: * Re: Please give some thought > to the following, and respond either to me personally or to the > list if it's appropriate... Jesse, these are some excellent questions. I'll take you up on this one... :) > 1 - Why do so many of you say that Spirit is "deeper" and reflects "more > maturity"? I don't think it is... I would say that, at best, Spirit is "more of the same" in terms of "depth"... Spirit is not my favorite Jewel recording... there's some very good moments, but I wouldn't call it deeper and more mature. (Considering something like 5 or 6 of the songs on Spirit were written circa POY, I'm not sure how it can be said to be more "mature" than POY... :) So, hey... I agree here. I've yet to see a justification for Spirit being "deeper" and "more mature", and I'd like to see one, too. > 2 - What are you responding to when you talk about "all this negativity"? I think this basically comes down to everybody bitching about how Jewel has changed. Yes, it's well within everybody's rights to get all self-righteous and indignant about how Jewel has changed, and she's not as cool as she used to be, and she overproduces her albums, and she wears lots of makeup. I won't argue that you "can't" do that. I *will* argue that you *shouldn't* do that, for several reasons: First: It doesn't change a damn thing. Jewel's going to do what Jewel's going to do, no matter what we think about it. All that's being accomplished by whining about Jewel changing is that people are going to get annoyed by seeing the same tempest in a teapot OVER AND OVER again on this list. Second: There are plenty of other musicians out there. If Jewel's changing image ruins her music for you, just enjoy what you've always enjoyed, and move on to some new artists... she's under no obligation to put out music anybody likes, and it's a free market, baby. Third: It doesn't change a damn thing, and it's annoying seeing the same stuff posted over and over and over again. Fourth: It doesn't change a damn thing, and it's annoying seeing the same stuff posted over and over and over again. Fifth: It doesn't change a damn thing, and it's annoying seeing the same stuff posted over and over and over again. (There's a recurring theme here, notice it? :) Now, with all that said, I really don't care if people post "anti-Jewel" sentiment to the list, my basic take on that is "Um.. whatever. Where's that delete button?" (Of course, that's my response to a LOT of the stuff posted to this list, to be perfectly honest... :) However, I fail to see the point in getting indigestion over something that's completely out of your power to change one teensy little bit. - ---------- Kevin Pease kbpease@boston.crosswinds.net ICQ UIN: 3106063 AOL IM: kbpease http://www.crosswinds.net/boston/~kbpease/ "... no I don't need a miracle / but I could use a push in the right direction..." ---(The Refreshments, "Interstate")--- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 12:33:10 PDT From: Asian Pride Subject: * I saw Jewel in mtn view california Hey guys, I went to Jewel's concert at mtn view and I got her autograph I am the person who went up at the front of the stage when jewel asked for the cd cover. if any one went to that concert email me ultraexpress@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 20:40:38 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: * Jewel on UK Arena Saturday 31st July @ 5:10 pm, Sunday 1st August @ 12:15 am UK Arena Later on Joni Mitchell and Co >From Joni Mitchell through Ricki Lee Jones to Jewel and Shawn Colvin, Jools Holland celebrates the work of some of the foremost female singer-songwriters. I mean, if you guys (The Criticizing EDAs) are supposed to be her fans, then I wonder what people do when they aren't her fan? Being a fan is kind of like being a friend to her, support her when she needs it, even though you don't know her personally. It's one thing about contructive criticism, like I thought it would've been better if she sang the CD version of Jupiter, etc...but not to go out screaming about her clothes or something trivial like that.
