Just thought some of you might be interested in this. I aint very positive... Take Care Jess **** anonymous California Date: 3 February 1999 Summary: A rather slow film with a few redeeming moments. I only saw a test screening and therefore it isn't fair to judge the film as finished - but from the product I saw it is clear that the film is terribly slow to start and drags throughout. There are a few humorous moments - usually from Tobey Maguire or Jeffrey Wright. I appreciated the fact that the film portrays the Civil War in a very different way than the stereotypical Civil War film, and the action scenes were very well done. A decent film, but not one I'd pay $7 to see. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 12:56:36 +0200 From: Marcel Ummelen Subject: * Re: What's bugging me about Jewel Hello Angels, Remko reacted on former message: >> 1)Jewel's departure from her image and new image: >well, I don't think Jewel's got a real new image, although I didn't know her >before about year ago, i don't think her general image has really changed, >yes, of course it's changed a bit, but I don't it has that much. I think she changed her image for sure. The innocent 17 year old girl from POY has been left for the mature woman of Spirit. It's so clear. Every performance on TV or stage gives me the same idea of this change. Well, I don't give my opinion on bad or good but I think it's a fact. The Fashion Police was not a great success. It was just meant to be a way to come to the change issue but many of the listers were picking it up in a wrong way. Sorry for that! But I still would really like to know what Jewel is wearing on stage at this tour. Please include your description on that .... I saw Jewel in 97 and she was a totaly different girl (on stage and on TV) compared to now. When I met her last May after a dutch tv-performance I was shocked that she hadn't changed a thing in daily life since the meet of November 97. > I really do think that all the "change" is not all Jewel's choice... I'm not convinced of that. I have thoughts on it but my mind is in a battle all the time. Is Jewel a type that does what she likes or can she easily be influenced by the managers at Atlantic? I really wouldn't know yet. >Yes, again I completely agree, they've realy overproduced the songs, as I >said (sorry I keep repeating it, but I just have a hard time expressing >myself, and I like you all to know how I feel) I miss the spark in the songs >on spirit, on the tour they were back (at least a whole lot of 'm), and *I* >think that that's just because of the overproducing. I like Spirit and love the way she brings sparkles in the songs. The loud version of Down is a total shock for many I think but I was hoping for it a long time. I feel this is the real Jewel that was on stage. Those last twenty minutes of her show rocks and I would die to see it again :-) I was stunned seeing the promo tour of May 97 but it was a complete different perspective. I don't compare these periods but I did draw a line last spring to end the POY-phase in my musical mind. Let's start a new phase and enjoy it. Just my opinion..... I noticed at her european spirit tour, that Jewel seems to enjoy herself singing country songs. And i have to admit, those songs she sang at her european tour are very touching and inspiring. Fly to me Angel, I don't wanna be loved by anybody but you and some other new songs do emphasize the desire of Jewel i suppose to write songs that gives you a happy feeling and that are meaningful. I personally really love the songs, as her voice and her accoustic guitarplay comes so much to flourish that i really enjoy listening to this songs a lot. So close to heaven is another example of a song that Jewel wrote not too long time ago, that is so beautiful. The lyrics of this song are very special, and i keep listening to this newer countrysongs of Jewel a lot. So i definitely will give Jewel a go ahead for making a countryalbum, as i think it would mean a lot to people in a lot of situations. No matter what you think , Jewel and her lyrics make of every day a wonderful day. I am really curious to listen to this songs they sung together Jewel & merle. I hope to read concertreview from the states with a lot of new songs of Jewel that i heard Jewel sing in europe too, or maybe some other new ones as well.. Anyway have a great summer and enjoy yourselves at the spirit concert tour in the usa a lot. i want to see Jewel in Europe again, i hope it will be happening soon . A very true thing, I hadn't thought of it that way, and I must say that you're making a very interresting point indeed, Yes I agree with you an album just gives a glimpse, I have been to 2 of her concerts in May, and have had the most wonderfull time, also with the songs from spirit (as I said she brought the sparks back in them), but wouldn't you think that if it were overproduced (it's just my opinion it is) that they (not just Jewel) have mad a small mistake somewhere? Why did I like her Spirit songs on the tour better then the album, and I'm talking about the songs themselve, not the performance around it. Why are the songs on Spirit so different from her live versions, I can only come up with overproduction, 'cause this is not the case for the PoY songs, I also heard these at her concert just as good as the ones on her album (OK some were a little better, some were a bit less, but the difference with the songs from spirit was more obvious to me). >It doesn't matter what songs comprise a setlist. It only >matters how the songs in any setlist are performed. No, I don't agree, it isn't the only thing that matters, but indeed a very big part, and it's certainly more important than the setlist. I have simply not been able to put the amount of nessessary preparation into promoting this show as my limited resources have all been focused on the San Diego and Irvine Gatherings. This does not mean that the Gathering of Angels is over, Just that I have learned that a successful event of this nature requires more time and resources than I have been able to give to this particular project. A friend ( a fellow EDA) and I are now working on an event called "Forest Fest" that I feel is more in the spirit the "Gathering of Angels" was intended to encompass when originally concieved. What is the Forest Fest ? I will post more about this very soon. But in the meantime here is a hint, At the San Diego, "Gathering of Angels," Nedra spoke of "Becoming your Dreams....." Hey all, I've got to say that I agree that the previous week of discussion was somewhat fruitless, but I thiink we need to be allowed that sort of thing. I haven't posted for nearly a year, but I feel inspired by the carnage I see before me. I'll keep it brief, however, which seems like a lost art these days. Friction is good. We should not all be able to get along. If Jewel does something that annoys us, we should be able to comment on it. I share many of Sean's views, but lack the venom and well placed adjectives he uses that seem to incite people. Whatever. I'm a little frustrated with Jewel's current incarnation too and I know she'll get through it. But I hope this still a list where I can say that without somebody getting weepy on me because they think it is their responsibility to defend Jewel at all costs. It's okay not to agree. Without some friction, relationships usually don't last. Without others to challenge our thoughts, our growth potential is limited. Now granted, I don't often refer to people's behavior or comments as "moronic" like Sean, but really, who cares? Too many fragile egos make a boring party. Relax. Take a breath. I love you guys, you are just so cute. Jon Reade ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #374 ***************************
