Well, I've been getting some mixed responses to my post and so I thought I'd clear a few things up. Firstly, Sean Hooks said: >You used Jewel's own quote to expose her hypocrisy. Well done. Didn't actually mean to do that. I didn't mean to imply that I thought that quote was true today. Mike Connell brought to my attention, very correctly, that she said that in an interview long ago when she didn't write setlists. I have absolutely nothing against her writing setlists. How could she not? It would be total chaos. Anyway, she still maintains some of the essence of her early shows and her fathers teachings with her solo set. Someone posted that they grabbed the setlist from one concert and all it said for that part of the show was "Solo" - no songs - right? I know she definitely read the audience at the first concert of the tour (Melbourne), taking requests and reading poetry. Also, in the subject line I wrote "Jewel doesn't write setlists!" to grab people's attention instead of writing another "lack of spontaneity" or what-have-you. It was actually being sarcastic, but these things do not come across when read. OK, that all from me. Take care, jess ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 00:58:45 -0400 From: "Russell Luyt" Subject: * A new twist... Hi everyone! My name is Russell and I joined this list (and became and EDA) about a month ago. It really is interesting hearing everyone express their opinions. The biggest reason why this list exists is because we all have an appreciation for Jewel. So we write about Jewel, her songs, her concerts, her "image", her works etc. and this is great. BUT, there is so much more this list can represent. Think about what it means to be an EDA, an Everyday Angel. It doesn't mean simply being a member of this list, at least not to me. It means something more, about being good, spreading kindness, doing positive things in our lives for ourselves and others. I would like to suggest that you think about what it means to be an Everyday Angel. Are you living up to that name or at least trying? And if the anser is yes, well then great, and let's hear about it. Perhaps by taking a new twist to this list, we can focus a little bit more on how WE as EDA's are making a difference in our lives and others. Make a post about how you helped someone that day, how you found courage to overcome an adversity, how you are feeling low. Maybe by telling all of us about how you are helping make this world a better place we will be inspired to do the same. This is what is called synergy, combining our efforts together to make the product more useful than individual efforts. I think it can work, what about you? Since I made this challenge, I will be the first to contribute. I was inspired by a fellow EDA by the name of Laura who wrote a beautiful post a while back about spreading kindness. Well, her post was particularly timely for me because at the time my faith in humanity was dwindling. The words and thoughts that Laura expressed were very helpful in picking me up and helping me to realize that we humans have so much to offer each other and that life is truly beautiful. So, with this reaffirmation of faith, I now try to look for positives in other people, looking for what they have to offer rather than wasting energy on their faults. Everyone big and small, friend and foe, has something positive to offer, it is our job to find out what that is. Best wishes in this search my friends! Mike, We really enjoyed your witty insights on the whole "changing Jewel negativity" thing. We ALSO wrote what could be considered a somewhat negative e-mail about her responsibity in her recent changes. We'd like to think of it as "constructive criticism," Mike, and we'd like to personally volunteer as charter members of the clothing SWAT team. :) Brigette has some fine Gap khaki's to offer Jewel before her Gorge appearance, and if she only wore size 6 Birkenstocks, I'd love to donate a pair of sandals so well-worn that her feet would just melt into the stage. See, we're trying to save her from the pain of spike heels and tight mini skirts. We won't even touch the cleavage subject with a ten-foot pole. (We're not that kind of girls, Mike...) Bottom line: we like the musical changes just fine, it's just Jewel's new "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" look that we could do without. Let's hear it for worn jeans, a comfy tee-shirt, and a damn good show at the Gorge! ~Brig & Chelle, Jewel's little helpers ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 23:36:43 -0700 From: Gerrit Subject: * NJC: Attn all Bay Area/Northern California EDA's! Hey everyone! Remember the regional EDA lists I created months ago? No? Well head on over to my web page and click on 'Mailing Lists' to see if there is one in yer area. If not, let me know! We're trying to get gatherings across the U.S. and abroad! My web page is located at: http://www.endor.org/jewel The news today is that the EDANoCal@endor.org mailing list has finally been created. The first request came from Paul Schreiber in March, but no one else came forward, so it was not created (Remember, the requirement was like 3 or 4 requests from one area). However, since I noticed quite a few Bay Area EDA's at the recent Southern California gatherings and well, even more obvious, my best friend asked me to make one for the Bay Area, I finally did. :) To start off the list, Paul Schreiber is already on it. However, all of you Bay Area EDA's gotta get off yer butt and onto the list to start organizing some Bay Area gatherings! =) Of course, be sure to post your final plans to the list to get others in on it so maybe you'll have some unexpected EDA's dropping in. ;P Oh Yeah... I almost completely forgot. To join the EDANoCal list, you can follow these simple directions (again , which you can also get off my page at http://www.endor.org/jewel under Mailing Lists) Send a blank e-mail to: EDANoCal-subscribe@endor.org And all the rest of you not in California, speak up! E-mail me privately so we can get some gatherings going in your area!!! Can't complain 'bout missing out if yer not doing anything about it. ;) Gerrit P.S. Season, I would have added u, but I dunno which e-mail yer using fer the lists, ehhe. :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 00:43:34 -0700 From: Gerrit Subject: * NJC: JewelLyrics Mailing List! Hey everyone, I just had an idea after seeing a silly mailing list for people to be updated when someone updated their web site. Why not have a mailing list SOLELY for Jewel Lyrics and Guitar Tabs? We all know how often she writes new songs and how many of us notice there are new songs we have not heard/ready about for months since someone first transcribed it. Well now there is a group for this. Yes, we are getting even more divided. But hell, I think it's a good idea, so I'm in. :) I also made it quite easy to download ALL of the lyrics and/or tabs from my web page. There is a nice button that says "Download Entire List of Lyrics" which goes thru the database and displays each one right after the other in a big huge text list which keeps up to date just as quick as the web page cuz it's pulling from the database instead of having me go thru and making it for you. ;P Right now I have 63 unique jewel guitar tabs and 142 unique jewel lyrics (not counting diff versions of each). I know there are more out there, and I'm sure some web pages have a few that I don't have. Send 'em over! =) Feel free to snag 'em all from me so as many Jewel fans can find 'em as humanly possible. :) In any case, to subscribe to the Jewel Lyrics mailing list, just send a blank e-mail to: JewelLyrics-subscribe@endor.org Of course, anytime I add a lyric to my web page, if it wasn't received thru the list, you had better know it will appear there. :) As usual, this is a completely unmoderated list and will remain so unless otherwise necessary. In any case, as usual here is my web site: http://www.endor.org/jewel Gerrit ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 05:09:37 EDT From: JMHuber99@aol.com Subject: * July 5th Salt Lake City concert... hello EDA's... this is the second time ive written this list, basically because i joined to find out the most i could about this girl who sang these awesome songs that i fell in love with. these would be the songs that i listened to when i felt down, or tired, or sad, or even when i needed a pick-me-up because they always made me feel better. these would be the songs that took some of us younger list members through some tough stuff in school, with friends and family, even when your pet goldfish sammy died and you needed a friend. Jewel somehow works a little magic into her words that calm the soul and put aching hearts at rest, and instead of criticising the way she looks, turn off the television, put your headphones on and block out everyone and everything that you know, and try to figure out what made you fall in love with this girl with her guitar in the first place. if you can........... and the whole point of this letter was to let you folks know that i'll be at the Salt Lake concert monday (yes, i get to see her MONDAY!!!!) with a nice little digital video camera if anyone wants a copy of it. email me personally for info. later! they call me john. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 03:45:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Abigail Greif Subject: * Yo Go Mike! /My two centes. Hi Angels. First- Mike, you post was absolutely brilliant! You said it so well! Moving on... I have to agree... I think what we're doing lately- judging Jewel's every move- is very wrong. We need to remember that none of us really KNOW Jewel. We're her fans, not family or friends. And even if we were- we still have no right to judge her or try to improve her. People have different patterns, and Jewel's is different, like all of them. And those patterns are in constant movement, we can't change it, and the only think we CAN do, really, is stop bitching and trying to enjoy it and make all we can out of it! So her music is different. No one is forcing you to listen to new materials rather than the good o'le angelfood! This list may be a "Jewel mailing list" by definition, but I doubt that Mike and the other people running this meant for this list to discuss Jewel herself and nothing else. thanx for reading, === "If music be the food of love-play on!" How long has this discussion on Jewel's new look has been going on? Like Mike said Jewel's a woman in her 20s, why can't she wear makeup? I didn't know trying to improve your own appearence could offend people so much. I always felt offended when someone critisized any new look I had. Some post seem to say that the new look also comes with a bad attitude. I'm not to sure how one would come to this conclusion. Well I have I good idea but still. Who hasn't met some geeky, docile looking wimp who turns out to be the biggest a-hole you ever met. Then there's of course those huge tough looking gangsters. You start to talk to him/her with your don't screw with me manner and that person turns out to be so polite you feel guilty about the agressive and hostile front you put up.Please don't judge people by their appearence , just b/c Jewel looks like a shallow pop diva (by the way still looks good to me) but that doesn't neccessarily mean she is one. Maybe she is. I don't know her personally and I don't think many of you others do either. If you intend to continue with this philosophy then I am curious about the correlation between what you say and how you look. Anyways I just got back from the concert here in Vancouver and I have to say that Jewel is an ass kicker if I ever seen one. That was a wicked performance. If anyone taped it I wouldn't mind a copy. Most of the songs were from spirit I think, except for two. I do have a complaint though. Some of the people at the concert are pretty bitter about something, not sure what. I haven't been to too many concerts but even at those metal concerts where people are kicking each other in the head they at least help you back up. A friend of mine who grew up on some island w/ the population of a high school lit a cigarette at the concert. I know this was wrong but hey he doesn't know much. This guy behind us starts to complain so my friend puts it out and apoligizes, should be the end of the story right? This guy goes on for another two mins and then I hear him start up again 5 mins later and an usher comes and says shes gonna kick us out if we do it again. What's the deal with that? The smoke is out sorry was said let it go. He's gotta try to get us kicked out too. Later on when we were crowded in front of the stage some girl stands on the chair behind me smacks me in the back of the knee my reflex is to stand back up her foot comes off the chair and then back down even harder. I try to move to a row behind me. I ask the guy behind me to excuse me so I can move to an open area where there was like 6 seats open and he says no. It's like he looks like a computer programmer (sorry for the stereotype) so he's gotta act like a a-hole to compensate. I hope none of these ppl were EDAs and I'm surprised that fans of someone who constantly pump out the "only kindness matters" propaganda could act in the exact opposite manner. Not being a teenager anyone I learned that being a jerk and knocking out everyone who pissees you off dosen't work (thanks to the many ppl who taught me that Jewel, cops and ppl seeking vengence) but w/ ppl like that around I see how hard it is for alot of ppl who want to be nicer have so much trouble. To all you who read all this thanks for reading my bitching. Well, Jewel is well known now, and people expect to hear the songs from Spirit and PoY, don't get me wrong, I'd love to hear some other stuff, but we're no the only crowd. I too would like a more variated setlist, but as I said (sorry) about a million times now, I think that that's the management's (no not just Lenedra)/records company's doing, not (just) jewel's. They decide most of the setlist, even if Jewel writes it herself, 'cause if she's gonna change it to much, the record company will jump in, and revert it back to the standard setlist. At least that's what I think.
