["Kim Lees" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 01:29:34 PDT From: Jessica Maki Subject: * anti NoCal EDA meet :)/live Jewel nonvirgin Hi angels-- Four hours after the beginning of the concert and: ~I've lost my voice (screamin so much.. well worth it, too!) ~Am wearing the white Jewel tshirt I bought that says *Zappo!* & has this picture of this angel-type-person with blonde hair ~Currently listening to the Steven J. Poltz Answering Machine CD (which I really reccomend you buying, classic Poltz humor! I purchased it from the merch venders at the concert) ~and am on this natural high from the concert (well, duh! why wouldn't I be?!) First of all, the kind of NoCal EDA gathering crashed and burned, but I still had the best night of my life with my boyfriend.. hehe. He really took a liking to Steve Poltz. He's been discussing purchasing a Rugburns CD and was trying to persuade me to buy One Left Shoe at the concert, just so he could hear more of Poltzie. I guess he's one of US now *evil grin* For those who are interested, I had this envelope that I purchased our seats in covered with the setlist for the Poltzie and Jewel shows that I wrote down during the concert, so here it goes...! Steve-- I Love You (not sure about this title) Gold's Gym Guy (he gave us the pleasure of telling us the story behind this song) Everything about You Just a Chair (very cute little song) Leavin' Again Silver Lining (i liked the harmonizing on this song, very countryish) I Love You, I Adore You, What Can I Do for an Encore (not sure about this title) The Great Mystery The Dog Doo Blues (i loved his little Scottish 'shiet'.. i cracked up) Improv Song he wrote about us kids in Shoreline :P Impala (w/ Jewel, everyone screamed when she came out, Jewel also forgot a line of it and Steve corrected her.. silly lil Jewel!) Creep (dedicated to Lisa Lopes -=Left Eye=- of TLC, even though it sounded like he was callin her Lisa Loeb.. and he was talking about how she torched her football playing bf's house) Waterfalls (another TLC song, and he kicked ass at the rapping part..) Star Wars Song ***additional notes on performance*** during "I Love You, I Adore You, What Can I do for an Encore?" Steve charmed some chick named Rebecca with blonde hair with a glass of wine (it looked like white) and was kind of hitting on her :) before the Star Wars song Steve instructed all of us to grunt like Chewbacca or else he'll "feel like an idiot doing it all by himself" he also accidently screwed up a lyric in the song, instead of George Lucas he said George Michael... gee Poltz, not that big of a difference, eh? :) Encore Jewel-- Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter YWMFM (nice little diddy and story) Innocence Maintained (told a humorous story about a German interviewer) Little Sister Morning Song Cold Song (she went through the hole "philosophical polka" bit) Enter from the East Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games (in the middle of this song i saw a shooting star go across the sky, sorry, had to mention that) Down So Long Race Car Driver I'll Take You There (? not sure about this title, either, I had never heard that song before) Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone (really more glam-rockish than the earlier versions i've heard) WWSYS (the layers of instruments made it sound like a 10 min porno song.. i loved it :)) Encore Absence of Fear Chime Bells ***additional notes on performance*** Jewel happened to quote stuff from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged me several times, she must've named about 3-5 :) They showed some younger pictures of lil Jewel up on the mega-screen thing. In the opening bars of "Little Sister" Jewel anounced that she forgot the lyrics and asked if anyone had the inside book for PoY with them and this real shy guy got to go up on stage and hold it open for her during the song so she'd remember. He was also lip synching, or maybe even singing along with her, after she shook his hand, lucky ba-- *voices trails off* During "Morning Song" you could feel all the testosterone-driven males in the crowd getting a LITTLE too excited when Jewel was singing "c'mon darling, let's go back to bed" etc. etc. This one guy close by me screamed out "I love you, Jewel!" and there was this pause and later he yelped out again "No, really, I do!" it was pretty funny, all the people around me was laughing. As if she could hear him, I mean, he was loud, but not that loud :) "Cold Song" was fun, I jumped up when Jewel started to play it and I used mom's handy dandy lighter that I had borrowed a couple of songs ago and during the song I had it lit and was waving it back and forth.. *silly grin* I just had to do something idiotic like that, I couldn't help myself. FINALLY in the beginning or mid-way into "Race Car Driver" Jewel gave the security guards a go to let us punk kids run down to the stage, so I got from being in Section 202, Row N, seat 11 all the way down to about 10-15 or so feet away from Jewel. It was pure heaven, even IF I wasn't , like, touching her. I was happy enough where I was. :) Oh dear, I nearly forgot.. THE NEW JUPITER. She played it. I like it. It's...... different, but it's better than Jewel being bored and standing on stage being all bored, now, aint it? Chime Bells was the last song of the concert, and I found it weird that I was the only one in the large crowd of people around me who KNEW it and was lip synching & singing along (softly and to myself, of course) I guess a great deal of them haven't found the wonders of angelfood yet. Actually, it was like that with ALL the non-album songs. The people around me just kind of gazed at me with baffled eyes because they had apparently never heard the song and here I was, mimicking my little heart out. Now, (for the chicks who went) was it just me, or was that electric guitar player (darnit, I can't seem to remember his name! I swore I wrote it down!!) was good looking!? Jewel made fun of that long-sleeved stretchy shirt. With that "conversation" (as we used to call it in jazz band) was going on between him & Jewel (ya know, someone plays/sings a little series of notes, and the other person has to copy them) was entertaining, too. In my little mind I was trying to puzzle out if in actuality the electric guitar player was just REALLY good, or if he and Jewel had rehearsed the same "conversation" earlier. Hard to tell. When I was waiting out in the parking lot I saw the guy who was taking down the "playing tonight: JEWEL" letters on the billboard-type-thing in front of the amphitheatre and I asked him if I could have the letters that spelled out Jewel as a souvenir, he was polite, but said no. I understand, he probably would have had to pay his superior or something for "loosing" them.. hehe In any event, it's late: I'm tired. So I'm going off to sleep now. If anyone made a tape of this concert or knows someone who did, please get in contact with me privately! - --Jessica, the angel covered in ink from writing down the setlist P.S. any errors I made in this review that are obviously unintentional and that I haven't pointed out that they could be, will most likely be corrected by me seeing how I'm exhausted and it's the wee hours of the morning here. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 21:29:35 PDT From: Justine L Subject: * Re: Jewel in sports catalogue I don't know about all of you, but isn't this going a little bit too far? She is ALWAYS telling someone to shut up when she performs... almost without fail. Applause is awarding, of course, but imagine trying to do something that takes concentration while you have three hundred people shouting "woo" and "I love you"... Just... clap. If you really feel you have to communicate something to her, you've really got to find a better way than screaming it in a crowd. > Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 13:43:59 -0700 > From: "Larry S. They're > playing her on my radio right now, its quite weird! i posted about this this weekend, but i guess it got lost during all of that craziness. the july issue of "mademoiselle" has a little section about the "sounds of summer's newest pop stars" and kendall payne is one of them. they go as far as to call her "the new jewel," so the fact that she played at jewel's show amuses me. the little blurb is on page 64. kendall's album is called "jordan's sister" and it is from capitol records. the title of the blurb is "the new jewel" and the jewel reference is as follows: "Nineteen-year-old Kendall Payne comes off equal parts gossamer (hence the Jewel comparisons) and guts (the inevitable Alanis allusions)...." i was at the lilith fair website yesterday and came across kendall's bio...i guess she toured with them last summer and is doing some shows this summer, too. hope that helps some! jennie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 21:50:39 +1000 From: "Christine Diefenbach" Subject: * Re: Jewel's lack of spontaneity & Steve Poltz CD > Maybe you feel that way because you've heard the story before. Well in this I partially agree, I agree that wearing to much make up isn't good, but you know, I think that isn't Jewel's descision entirely, I think that she is pushed a lot on those kind of things. But what I disagree on is that physical appearance tells a lot about someone, that is so untrue, it is true that everyone draws conclusions on someones appearance, I do it also, everyone does, but it doesn't give any clue about how someone really is. > And that's how it relates back to my point about her music.
