As you've probably all heard me complain before, I can't go to the concert on July 30th, here in Maryland, or any other concert for that matter. The point of this post was to ask a favor to someone who is going. Would it be possible (if merriweather allows it) for someone to record the concert for me? It would be much appreciated! Where she was screaming like Limp Bizkit. Alternative music, not an alternative as in another. You see, I wrote this at 2AM! And, even though the band could quickly lear a new song, that does not mean Jewel takes requests. They have a setlist now and they didn't before, and that's what makes all the difference. There are a few poitns where I'm sure she could improvise but there are many where she could not. It's one thing to improvise during a song (she skipped a verse in Love Me, then went back to fill in the blank verse, and then skipped the verse she sang originally -- accidentally -- and the musicians looked at each other and managed to go around it.) So I know they're capable of taht but they went straight from one song right into another, so they obviously had it all planned out. They can't all start going into a song and then Jewel says "Wait hold on I want to sing something else". This is how the concerts are nowadays, not nearly like they were before. So shouting out requests would do no good. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 10:23:46 +1000 From: "Christine Diefenbach" Subject: * Jewel's lack of spontaneity Urrrk her set list is basically identical to all her other set lists on this tour... Not nearly as much as I used to. But I was listening to her today and I think I know why I don't listen to her as much anymore. Because it makes me angry. Today I pulled out some of my tapes and listened to a few songs, just a few. I listened to the Innerchange Days version of "Been Down So Long" and then a few songs from Jewelstock: "Here When Gone," "Angel Needs a Ride," "Summer Home in Your Arms," "Everything Breaks Sometime." And I get angry because they are so damn good and now everything she does is so mediocre. It's not bad. The setlist from the first American show was far from bad, but it was equally far from good, excellent, wonderful, amazing, and triumphant. Those 5 songs I listened to were those things. They contain a level of true greatness that cannot be found anywhere in her recent "work." So I find it difficult to listen to that kind of music because it infuriates me to see people with such amazing potential fail to use and realize it. For a person who talks a lot about faith, it is very difficult to have faith in Jewel's music itself. Oh, and one other thing I noticed in listening to my old Jewelstock tapes. Look at the J-cards of those tapes. Her appearance is worlds away from what it is now. Mike Connell(this list's manager) has always argued with me that Jewel is a twentysomething female and she's gonna wear make-up and I should deal with it. Well, I disagree. In her videos and TV appearances that she now does her face is not even what we see. Her make-up is so thick it's like you're not even looking at a person. One's physical presentation of themselves tells you a lot about them in my opinion. I am reminded of a quote from the short story collection The Informers by Bret Easton Ellis where a character says the following: "She's wearing a lot of makeup...But she looks like most girls, waxy and artificial." And that's how it relates back to my point about her music. In the 5 or so songs I listed above, Jewel's music is outstanding, astounding really. Now it is blaise, mediocre, just like most girls, nothing special, nothing different or unique. To stick with the Bret Easton Ellis references, I am reminded of one last thing from that same short story collection. It is a scene where a couple are at the zoo. They are arguing bitterly while commenting on the state of affairs at the zoo: the fact that the animals looked drugged, they have scars from being beaten, the kangaroos cringe and squeal in fear when the zookeepers enter their cages, the monkeys are slow and pathetic. They are standing in front of the zebras as they are having this argument, full of obscenities and hatred. One of the zebras saunters over towards the couple and the woman looks down to see a small child, with a beaming smile on its face, waving at the zebra. It's a scene that really got to me when I first read it, as does much of Ellis's fiction, it is often very disturbing and a very real indictment of the human condition. But again it reminded me of Jewel's music. Where once she was the innocent child, she is now the bickering couple. It had already started by the time I hopped in my car leaving my boyfriend's house, but by what I heard, I really liked it. It was better than I expected. When I first heard it was going to be the next single, I wondered why couldn't they have picked a better song, because I couldn't imagine Jupiter being "radio friendly", but she sounds more energetic (on the album she barely sounds upbeat) and I like this song now, probably more than I do her other singles. I didn't think I would. Is Jupiter going to be released at all as a single anywhere? I'd love to get a copy of the import. The singer will feature in the 1999 fall women's sports collection catalogue and Hilfiger, in turn, will sponsor her upcoming US tour. `Like the title of her album, Jewel represents the true `spirit' of the Tommy Hilfiger woman,'' said Tommy Hilfiger. ``Jewel not only encompasses inner and outer beauty, but she has a unique and elegant style. Her musical talents and influence are revealed in her beautiful voice and moving lyrics. Beyond music, her force as a positive and inspirational role model for women is shown in her passion and concern for world issues and her personal career growth. I cannot think of a more suitable female musician who best personifies the Tommy Hilfiger image. I am thrilled to be working with her.'' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ be good!!, or bad ;-) Craig ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #357 ***************************
