Any visiting EDA would be on a wild goose chase if they went looking for this building, because it does not exist. The venue being played is the UCF Arena(University of Central Florida). Hope this helps any confused EDA's out there. I want to remind all of those that >will be attending the Jewel concerts this summer, it's important to tape >the concerts. Whether it be on a portable DAT or Cassette Walkman. You might think >you need expensive equipment, but it really doesn't cost that much. If you >have a cassette recorder, those work okay. Though the best recordings are made >with DAT using an external microphone. Most venues don't allow taping, >but that doesn't stop most people from taping. Sorry if this has been discussed before, I am relatively new to the list. Perhaps someone might be able to answer some questions I have on Jewel's taping policy... 1) Even though this topic has been addressed in the (somewhat outdated) Jewel-FAQ, does the information still hold true? Is Jewel still allowing taping, or has it been changed to "no taping allowed" since Jewel has become more popular? Obviously I am not going to burn CDs and sell them. (From the Jewel FAQ:) >...Concert taping however has been >encouraged by Jewel as a way of distributing her music through her fans >on a non-profit basis. Like several other artists, such as Dave Mathews >and Metallica, it is believed that this is a good way of promoting the >music and expanding the fan base even further. Jewel believes that >without this tape base, many of her songs would be lost forever. It is >uncertain if it will be allowed in the future she becomes more popular >and bigger target for the illegal bootleggers. 2) All of the venues that I will be seeing Jewel at have a "no taping policy unless otherwise specified" policy (the artist/artist's management allows it). Is this the case with this current tour? I can always smuggle in my equipment, but it would be nice if I (and other tapers) didn't have to go through the hassle. My advice for newbie tapers: George is right, you don't need fancy equipment to make decent recordings. I think you can get a decent Awia recorder for around $80. If at all possible, try to tape a few shows to get some practice. Also, become very familiar to the button layout of the recorder (especially helpful in dark venues). Steve The Indie Angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 00:10:20 -0700 From: "TSUNAMI" Subject: * NJC "Rizoule" and EDA's questions First off, it was me that said he couldn't find any sound-files on the site of "Rizioule" -- and that was my mistake. I'm sorry about that. I revisited the site tonight, and though I still can't access the "music" page from the home page, I can get into it backing in from the "writings" page. So now I can actually hear the content that I was only reading before (eg. Jewelsong "She's the Jewel in my crown/ She's my Queen and I'm her/ Knight in Shining Armour/ Lost so many years ago in a dream/ Lost so many years ago") One of the things that's very special about this EDA list, is the way that, like in a real community, people look out for each other. It's natural that questions will be raised when things are going on like they have been, and several San Diego-based EDAs have raised legitimate issues. This is not about how "Rizioule" dresses or cuts his hair, etc. etc. (it's not even clear who's seen him yet, so that's hardly a concern -- yet :) ; the concerns raised are about how people are being treated and whether or not the event(s) planned have taken into consideration all people as much as promotion of a few; (and there are other specific concerns posted here already); as someone who regularly puts on concerts, involving numerous performers, it's always welcomed if efforts are made to treat everyone evolved in an event fairly and equally (which doesn't mean the same, just respectfully in the same measure); that folks on this list are asking questions seems to me to be a healthy sign that people here still care about each other; we are still "tiny lights for each other" I hope everyone has a lot of fun this weekend in SD, and soon in Texas, La. etc etc etc.!!!, and real joy is shared cheers, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 20:17:06 +1000 From: Steven J Neville Subject: * "The Aussie Guy" is back home (from Jewel Storytellers/NYC) Hi all Wow, what a trip. For those who don't know, I just spent two weeks in NYC. I landed in NYC on the afternoon of June 8th. I checked in at the hotel, changed into clothing more appropriate for a heat wave!!, caught my bearings of the city and then attempted to catch a cab to the VH-1 rehearsal.... 45 mins later, I arrived at the Studio 20 mins late. Firstly, a few hello's. Dennis: So just when are you coming to Australia? I have to buy you alcohol at some stage!! YMCA, YMCA. Eric: My first night in NYC and you take me to a gay bar?? (Not that there's anything wrong with that. Poor Seinfeld quote.) Amy: I see the survey that Sue did shows you as being 33yo. ??? surely not. MrBB: Yes, after visiting Washington the Smithsonian's are amazing. So was the Surrealism at the Guggenhiem. Mike Connell: Where were you???? Lindsay: Great meeting you. Say hi to your mum for me. Chris: On your recommendation, I'm already planning a trip to Boston. Well, maybe one day!! Johnny and Kelli: Good to see an EDA performance was made at the Karaoke bar. Fran: Don't eat all the Vegemite at once!! Peter, Abel and John: How long did we spend talking to Lee?? Poor guy :-) Hi also to Sue & Jeff Harrison, Dan Stark, Leif and a few others whose names I've forgotten. Secondly, I would like to apologize to any and all who may have thought that I was very quiet and perhaps 'unsocial'. I would have loved to have meet more and spoken for longer with many of the EDA's in attendence, but by the time that I fell asleep at 5am, Thursday June 10th, I had had only 3 hours sleep in the preceeding 54 hours. Damn jet lag!! Anyhow, at the end of the rehearsal, the first EDA that I had the pleasure of meeting was Dennis Harris. I thought maybe it was the heat affecting his mind, but it turned out that Dennis is always hyper!! I then met Eric and a few others before we headed off to a restaurant called America. From here we walked for what seemed forever until we arrived at a karaoke bar called Pieces. After entering the bar, we discovered that it was a gay bar. Once we had considered our options, we decided to go with the flow and stay at the bar. Dennis was very generous and paid for my drinks (a favour which will be repaid at some future date) and as soon as he thought we were drunk enough, he attempted to get us to sing YMCA. Five guys doing the full monty to YMCA in a packed gay bar!!!! Yes, good in theory and I'm sure we would have won, but more alcohol was definitely required for that one! The concert was totally amazing. It was the first time that I have seen Jewel live and for it to be in such an intimate situation made it even better. After the concert I had my picture taken with Steve Poltz and then some farewells were said before about 6 of us went to "the bar on 11th between A and B". As you have already read, Jewel and Doug Pettibone showed up until the VH-1 guy scared her away. Later, Steve Poltz and Lee Greene showed up and we talked and drank with them until about 4am. If you ever get the chance, talk with Lee. This guy is amazing and probably gained his own fan club that night. (He certainly became a fan of Abel!!). Anyway, this is getting too long, so I'd better stop now. You cannot. It is not possible. However, you could do one of three things to join in: 1) sign up for America Online (AOL) 2) Sign up for AOL, and leave after a month (they have one month free trials) 3) go to a friends house who has AOL (bringing a free pizza and beverage will help sweeten the bribery process) Little known but money-saving fact....if you already have a separate Internet Service Provider, you can sign up for AOL and use a TCP/IP connection through the Internet Service Provider to use AOL and the AOL price is then ONLY $9.95 a month!!! I know it may sound complicated, but it's a lot easier than you think. More info about this is at the very bottom of my web page for list members at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Remember, the chat starts at 8:00 Eastern USA time. My mom ordered me tickets to the Jewel Concert in MD and they sent us tickets to the Lilith Fair for two days earlier. It makes me sad because there are no refunds and now I don't know if I get to go. I would like to go to Lilith Fair, but I have summer school and I'm not sure I'll be able to get there in time, also I don't know if my boyfriend can get off to take me. If my mom decides to let me get rid of the tickets, I will let you guys know. Well, enough of my complaining, I'll let you read someone elses mail now. :) Sherry The Dancing Winterguard Angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jun 1999 10:05:41 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: * Houston EDA Gathering Update! Special note to Luna and Dennis --- Please contact me asap if you've made any more plans for the gathering. We don't have much time left to organize this. **************************************************************************** This update will appear once more next week and a final version (hopefully with all the plans) will be posted a few days before the show, on July 10. Some EDA's are also planning to go to the Dallas show which is the day before, and the New Orleans show, which is the day after. This post will only refer to the Houston show though...as far as whose going, the plans for earlier in the day, after the show, etc. As of right now, there aren't any 100% *definite* plans, however some things have been tossed around, and we are speculating they will occur...once we figure out a time, place, etc. Plans call for an all-day gathering...before the show, and maybe after as well. Once a placed is established, we plan to have a BBQ/picnic/plywood roping contest/beer guzzling contest (j/k) whatever else you can think of that's FUN! Some EDA's will be arriving Friday night very late, coming back from the Dallas show. So no time or place has been established yet as for when this gathering will "start", and where it will be. More than likely, there will be some sort of BBQ either at someone's house, or wherever we can find a good place for that. This will occur around lunch time I'm guessing...but this isn't definite. We'll all hang out till it's time to make our way to the venue, allowing enough time to get there to see Steve take the stage at approx. 8:00pm. I'm predicting she'll play about 45 minutes, then there will be a 15 minute break for stage preparation for Jewel, then I think Jewel will play at least 1 1/2 hours...which I think is really cool since the longest I've ever seen her perform before was 1 hour. So it most likely won't be over till at least 10:30, maybe even closer to 11:00pm. After that some of us may get together and go to a club, or just hang out somewhere. But others maybe not be able to, and yet others may want to get an early start on their road trip to New Orleans the following day. So all this is still really up in there air. But we'll think of something soon enough. Right now we're looking at about 17-20 EDA's...unless more get tickets soon. Most of the covered reserved seating is sold out, although somehow ticketmaster.com is showing over 20 tickets left in this section, and a few weeks ago there was only 1 seat...so you still have a chance to get some GOOD seats it seems. So don't wait too much longer if you haven't already bought tickets. They are only $36.00, that includes all the taxes too, which to me is cheap based on the prices of other recent shows. Lawn seats are even less of course, if you prefer that. So that's about it for now...here's a list of all the people that have told me they're planning on coming to the show in Houston...if you have any questions, e-mail me, Dennis, or Luna...I think we're the ones that are "sort of" getting this all together...or so it seems anyway. All of the e-mail addresses appear below. One of us should be able to give you somewhat of an answer...at least to the best of our knowledge at this time. The show is about 2 weeks away, so hopefully soon we'll have most of the plans ironed out as far as the where's, when's, etc. I'll send a revised letter to the list once the plans are established. At the latest, it'll be a few days before the show. But I'll also submit another update letter sometime next week. If anyone sees any incorrect or missing info in the list below, let me know so I can get it corrected ASAP.
