What are you saying here?? Were talking about singers and musicians not super human people. Everyone (including DMB, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, etc.) has off days/performances. Their only human!! And even if an artist is sick (as Jewel has been) or what have, I have no doubt that they do the best they can and perform to the best of their ability. Comparing Jewel to all the other mentioned artists is like comparing apples and oranges. Yes, their all artists, but each one is unique and different and have different talents as artists. But to say they put forth more effort and energy is ridiculous. Jewel works very hard and brings her own style and uniqueness to her music. She cares very much for her fans and puts on amazing live shows. I think the effort and energy she puts forth is obvious. The artists you mentioned may have been in the "business" longer, but that does not mean they put forth more energy and effort? I don't think so. Hello fellow Jewel fans: I enjoyed Jewel's last night performance at David Letterman's show in channel 2. It was awesome the way Jewel interpreted the song Jupiter. She showed so talented making those nice innovations from the original recording. I don't know why other of the fellow Jewel's fan don't like it. I feel sorry for them but i love it. I am just waiting to se Jewel for my first time at the Irvine Medows in June 27. It will be my first time to see Jewel singing live. I hope to meet some of you EDAs and interchange our thougts about our angel Jewel. Well, knowing you guys, probably a few of you =) But in most people's opinions -especially mine - the new version of Jupiter is totally kick-ass, and when the people who haven't heard it finally hear it, they're gonna be pleasantly surprised!! Jupiter is now one of my favorite Jewel songs on the strength of her one performance of it at PinkPop - it rules!!! So leave Jewel alone and try and find a version of the *rock* remix of Jupiter! Now!!! Hey, at least it's gonna be Jewel's first single with her REAL band, not the bunch of no-hopers from the album (j/k) - go Steve!!! Hehe Oh yeah, MrBB - I can't see anything hip-hop about the beat to the new Jupiter... I don't think you're much of a hip-hop fan somehow... Although it'd be great to hear Jewel with scratch plates and mixing and stuff. Hmmm, now there's a thought..... She says in her letter that she likes it: "I was just a girl who was tired of waitressing and people believed in me and fed me by coming to my shows. Without my friends in San Diego, and now this incredible new group of people across the country I would still be hungry in my van. Now I'm just hungry in a rent-a-car in 48 states in 40 days- but my heart loves it! 24 hours of this a day is better than three hours of waitressing." In the poem that I previously posted, its about pressure.. media is always picking on famous people in magazines..like I saw a magazine article that had a picture of Jewel and a big thing that said "Would you be caught dead looking like this?" Anyway, I do agree that Jewel is Jewel and as a fan you should support her, she is always full of new ideas and makes changes to be an all around person. She isn't into just one thing, like she says she likes to write poems, sing, play the guitar, write her own songs, she's even done some artwork, acting..etc. Let her show the world all she can do because she's always going to be doing more things and thats part of why I like her so much. *Jade* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 10:22:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Shawn Eric Mende Subject: * Merriweather concert in MD I just got my tickets for the July 30th show here in Maryland...boy, am I psyched! I don't think I have ever once responded directly to someone's comments on Jewel or her performances. However, I always am bothered when someone sends a message saying basically "don't send any bad comments about jewel to this mailing list." I've seen a handful of these messages in the past few days since her performance on The Late Show, and quite frankly, I don't agree with any of it. Sure, we are all fans of Jewel to one degree or another, but that doesn't mean we can't be critical of her performances. Always agreeing or disagreeing with the actions of a particular person, in my eyes, is one of the worst things people can do to themselves and everyone else. You see this kind of stuff in drab political rallies in Congress where Democrats will 99 times out of 100 side with the majority of the Democrats just for the sake of it (and likewise for the Republicans). It is a state of mentality that I just cannot understand. Jewel herself is a person who endorses personal freedom. Everyone has the right to do what they want to do (within reason), and likewise everyone has the right to either agree or disagree with it. Saying "We shouldn't write bad things about Jewel" completely goes against this idea, and completely goes against the freedom of expression. Granted, there are times I wish to myself that people wouldn't judge Jewel's physical appearance as much as they should, but if that's what is what draws them to being a Jewel fan, then I guess I can't hold them back from making their remarks. I'm not targeting anyone in particular, because it is something that I have seen for as long as I can remember being on this mailing list. I'm also not attacking anyone or trying to be hostile or anything like that, so I hope nobody interprets it as such. Hello fellow EDAs, Well, now that I am suffering from Jewel withdraw I feel that it is time to tell everyone about my experience in NY at the taping of "The Late Show" w/David Letterman. Yes, I was there and I thought it was a great rendition of "Jupiter". My day started off by walking around NY city aimlessly with nothing to do except wait around for "The Late Show" to begin. At around 4 o'clock I registered my tickets and headed around to the side of the theater where about 15-20 other people were waiting to catch a glimpse of Jewel. When I asked them if Jewel was there already they said yes she was and then they pointed at her limo and said "that's hers". I then asked if Steve Poltz was there yet and everybody kind of gave me a "who's that" kind of look. As I was standing there I started talking to this guy who strictly collects autographs and sells them(something I frown on). He started telling me how he "hates Jewel and that she is such a mean b*tch ever since she made it big". Of course at this point I had to defend Jewel by saying how people change and what a boring world it would be if there was no change going on with people and the world around us. He then asked me if I would like to know what hotel she was staying at because if he doesn't like the celebrity he will tell anybody where they are staying. So he gave me the address of the hotel and this gave me hope for getting Jewels autograph! Anyways, about 15 minutes passed and along came the white van that the band travels in. Out pops Steve and the rest of the band! Nobody standing with me knew who who they were. Steve was at the van loading up his arms with his gear so I walked over to the van and asked him for a quick autograph. He seemed pleasantly surprised that I had a copy of "One Left Shoe" and proceeded to sign it, even with an arm full of gear, which was very cool of him! I told him good luck on the show and he said "Thanks" and proceeded on his way into the theater. The entire "Late Show" taping was great but I was getting excited for Jewels' performance. It was about 6:30 and time for Jewel to do her number. It only took two notes for me to realize that she wasn't doing "Down So Long" but instead "Jupiter", I was so happy about this! In my opinion the song sounded fantastic! When the song ended Dave gave Jewel a kiss on the hand. After the cameras went off Jewel whispered something in Dave's ear and then gave him a quick peck on the cheek. I guess this was a "I'm sorry I said you look like a donkey kiss". Between the break Jewel and Dave were extremely chatty with one another. Well, at this point the show was over, so I headed out to the side of the building where the guests come out. To my surprise there was about 75-100 people waiting already. Seeing the cameras in their hands and knowing how Jewel doesn't exactly like her picture taken I decided that Jewel wasn't going to be signing any autographs, and decided on heading for her hotel. After a pretty lengthy walk I finally found her hotel! I waited around for about 15 minutes when Jewel's limo pulled up! This is when I started getting really excited! The door opened up and out came some guy, I had no idea who he was. The limo door stayed open while the guy got his belongings out of the trunk, but much to my dismay he closed the door when he was done. The limo then pulled away and I asked the guy if Jewel would be back anytime soon and he said she will be back in later tonight. With this said I went on my way, thinking the entire time to myself "should I have just went up to the limo?" But then I thought that if I would have went up to the limo that it would have just been plain rude, and besides that I wouldn't want to have Jewel get pissed off and tell me to get lost! That would be a real heart breaker :-( This was how my day came to a close. Now that you've gotten through my long post(much longer than I had projected), I have an issue here to address. It is the whole "I wish Jewel never changed" thing. I for one enjoy Jewel's music. Whether it would be her singing the alphabet or the infamous Leno performance of DSL. The great thing about live performances is that you can improvise them, change them around. For those of you who don't like her performances on Leno, Letterman, and O'brien my suggestion to you is to mute your TV sets and play her cd while watching her perform. It seems that all you want is a carbon copy of her studio albums. Well, with this said, I wish you all a good day! Bye for now!
