Secondly: Letterman I have a number of bones to pick about posts so far. Whoever said that if you don't like jewel don't listen, don't go around slagging off Jewel, everybody has a right to an opinion on her music. Looking back, Jewel is one of the people who supports voicing one's opinion, no matter what it is. That is why the list is here: to discuss Jewel's music. We can't kid ourselves and say everything she puts out should be put on a pedestal and held up to the light. From the number of posts saying "she's under a lot of pressure" That implies she didn't enjoy what she did in letterman does it not? Has anybody considered the fact she might have enjoyed herself. I think whoever said Jewel is Jewel is closest to the mark here. And she is an artist, re-interpretation of her own songs is not a sin. It seems that a thought is running thru the list that every performance is supposed to be some deep and meaningful insight into her soul. Jewel is allowed a sense of humour, a lighter side, no? Let's not kid ourselves, she has breasts that a great deal of men will ogle at for a long time yet. That does not mean she can't play with that image once a while. If she flaunted it to sell all her albums I'd be worried, but she isn't. She can't pretend they're not there so as to seem a deeper artist. I remember a while back that furore over her putting on too much make up. People say that others will see one side of her, the beauty rather than her musical talent. Aren't the people who say that doing the same thing? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 22:07:47 EDT From: owner-jewel@smoe.org Subject: * Houston EDAs. I'm a-going to the concert! I'm so excited!!!!!! My ticket to the jewel concert atr the Cynthia Woodlands Mitchell pavilion has been bought, and I'm all thrilled about it. I got pretty good seats, I think, I'm so happy, can't wait for my tickets to get here by mail. My grin couldn't be wider. :o) :o) :o) Any of those of you going, I was wondering, we can take cameras in, right? I'll be so happy to meetcha all! The Silent EDA, Sunyoung ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 22:30:36 -0400 From: Courtney M Gordon Subject: * human beings Dear Angels, I think these kind of debates are very...nifty, in a word. I think that if nothing else, at least Jewel is going with how she may have felt, not just acting happy just because that's what people want. I'm not comparing Jewel to Kurt Cobain or saying that Jewel would ever (shudder to think...ugh.) commit suicide, but in Kurt's suicide note he said basically that he felt going on stage was more of a chore than anything else, and that he hated having to act like he's feeling something he's not (i.e. happy to be performing, when he isn't.) so at least Jewel isn't lying about it. just thought i'd share. love and luck always Courtney the EvE 6 / Lit, completely in love with Max, Jon and Tony, but dating Bob, infatuated with Shane from rollhaven, wierded out by backstreet gir...i mean, "boys" loving friend, wondering about the mental stability of herself angel. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 22:54:06 EDT From: SilentEDA@aol.com Subject: *NJC? Bearsville? What bearsville thing? EDA camp? I don't know what you all are talking about, since I will not have any internet service starting sometime in July, I am sorry to say I guess I won't be a part of the EDA anymore. :*( That whole bearsville thing sounds cool, I guess I won't be knowing about it, sigh....Well, I hope you guys have fun. :*) The SIlent EDA ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 00:25:47 EDT From: Salinger99@aol.com Subject: * Forgot about Jewel and College and Spirituality Hi, all. I was on such a natural high on Wednesday night, I totally forgot to mention that when Jewel was asked what she would study if she had the opportunity to attend college, she stated that quantum physics interested her. I found this very interesting, but not strange. Jewel's a very multifaceted individual, and though my knowledge of the subject is limited to watching episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Sliders," I know that it's a very fascinating subject. A lot to do with dimensional theory, spacial anomalies, etc. Also, when asked what her spiritual beliefs were, she stated that she doesn't belong to any specific religion, nor was she truly raised with one, and has done a lot of studying of the religions of the world. She said that she believes in "God," but not as someone sitting on top of a cloud somewhere, pointing his finger at you, and she said that growing up in Alaska, you grow up with a sense that there's something bigger than yourself out there. She sounds very transcendentalist to me. The next Thoreau or Emerson, perhaps. :-) Anyway, I thought that those who weren't in attendance on Wednesday would be interested in these answers of Jewel's if they haven't been posted already. - -Matt, The "Still-In-Disbelief-That-Jewel-Was-One-Foot-In-Front-Of-Him" Philosopher Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 00:40:05 EDT From: ShadieBlu@aol.com Subject: * NJC: EDA cover tape wanted Hello, Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk I too was wondering if I could get a copy of the first EDA cover tape. "i like to change my songs...I get bored..Im not a studio musician...I am learning to play rock guitar.." those little comments were said throughout the night. Here's the thing...SHE'S not going back to the InNERCHANGE, or JAVA JOE's ...the innerchange isn't even there...ya know why?! cause people change....you will never see that innocent NINETEEN year old girl again..she's a 25 year old woman who WANTS TO ROCK. She should be able to wear leather an lotsa makeup if she wants to...she looks hot! The thing that bothers me the most and that some of you guys think that you know who she is as a person just because of what you've seen and heard and read...BUT YOU DON'T. It doesnt matter how long you've been a fan, you (in most cases) have probably never even spoken a word to her. She's an artist...she's creative, she is allowed to make changes...did you all complain when she re-recorded Foolish games for batman? and then..we all love the rock version of that. What about WWSYS? People keep complaining that she isnt playing guitar anymore...but you should have seen her at VH1..she is writing much more complex stuff and she really seems to enjoy playing electric and she's pretty darn good..better than I thought. She is still writing her own stuff..the day she sings someone else's work (not a cover I mean) is the day that I will stop liking her...till then...I see this all as creativity. .maybe the label is asking for her songs to be more radio-friendly.(?) .but she certainly seems to enjoy the new version of Jupiter. If you don't like her style now, you really have a problem cause she just keep changing..country's next, she said it herslf...so you either have to stick by her, or deal with the fact that you simply like "old Jewel" and move on and thats ok...but to have an opinion is one thing but to completely bash her is quite another. Granted this is a discussion list...but we are also a fan list..and without us, as Kelli said, Jewel would have a lot more trouble adjusting to fame and fortune...and I am truly proud to say that I am an EDA and although, I don't like all her performances either and to be honest..I hated her pants on letterman ;) but I love her...and I think she's awesome and I am not going to flip out over the changes and choices she has made as an artist...I'l take it all with a grain of salt, because frankly.I think she's amazing, and she's the closest to angel that I've ever seen..even in leather. wow this is long...sorry - -linds the clepto angel (hehhe...Nicole!) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #318 ***************************
