I'm a fan of good music. I am a fan of Jewel's music. I am not a fan of her the person because I don't know her personally. It's just that I've seen Jewel at her best, I was at Jewelstock, I saw her perform back in 96 and every time I saw her that year she was excellent. I know what she is at her best and it upsets me when her art is mediocre or downright weak(as the Letterman performance was) and anything but her best. There's nothing wrong with trying to change. But the girl singing Jupiter just then was a far cry from the girl I've seen sing songs like Louisa and Her Blue Guitar, Amen, WWSYS, Nicotine Love, and countless others while standing straight with an acoustic guitar, strumming beautifully and singing gorgeous, inspiring, wonderful lyrics. Hey, everyone has low points and high points, even the greats. Bob Dylan, considered by most to be one of history's greatest musicians and one of the most influential people of the 20th Century had a whole decade's worth of intolerably bad work. MacPhee" Subject: * dave letterman: Jupiter Well, fellow EDA's, I've just finished watching the last quarter of Dave Letterman, where she performed a quite different version of "Jupiter" than the album version. "Jupiter" probably ranks as one of my top five songs on SPIRIT, so I was pleased when I heard that she was going to be performing this song- at least she wouldn't be doing DSL again. The song was lovely- nice and soothing, relaxing. I'm glad that she is going to re-record it, and not release the album version as the third single. As for her appearance- facial-wise, I think that she looked much better than she has looked recently on talk-shows. Her hair looked more "natural", not complex. But body-wise, mum, I think the push-up bra was over done a tad too much. Still, she looked great! On a lighter note, this is the first time that I've seen Poltzie stay in one place for an entire song. I didn't think it possible!! And Dave's humorous touch on the donkey reference was welcome- but did anyone think that Jewel seemed a bit nervous when he kissed her hand? I think it's great when someone changes a song like that, giving it a fresh sound. Jewel seems to be one of the best at doing this, she did a great job with WWSYS last night at Storytellers too! Hey EDAs This is message is to all the EDAs that have ordered a shirt from me or is planning to do so, this message is very imporant so read it carefully. First, I recieved the sample shirt a few weeks ago and it was less than perfect if I do say so myself. This is not to say that the design was bad by any means. The design has been through a few revisions and I have been fighting with the company that will be printing the shirts to make that design look EXACTLY the way it appeared on my web page. This has not yet happened but, the latest revision does look very good. I have updated my webpage with the new design. go here to see it http://picket.cc.purdue.edu/~shortdog/Jewel/t-shirt.html the first thing you will notice is the lettering font is different. I don't think this is much of a big deal but I can not speak for everyone. Everyone please go to the above site and look for the differences....This is the FINAL design. It is getting too close to ordering time for me to "fight" with the printing company any longer. In light of this unexpected dilemma I have decided to give EVERYONE the opportunity for a total refund for the amount they sent me. If you do not like the final design then tell me as soon as possible so that i can get money back out to you right away. Returned money will be in the form of a check from me or your own check if i have not desposited it yet. I believe the FINAL design is very good and I have the shirt right in front of me and it looks good. I had this actual shirt scanned and put the image on my web page. If you have ANY questions what so ever then email me right away at jewels@purdue.edu and I will do my best to respond quickly. I am sure I will get overwhelmed with email do to this but that is my own fault i guess. Anyway keep smiling everyone and I hope all are happy with the decisions i have made. Who knows-- it could happen. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 00:59:17 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: * It's my turn now. Ok ok....so I lied to Sean...anyhow...I won't repeat the things I've already said to him...but for the most part, I'm in total agreement. I do find it interesting that this list is so diverse though...but I guess that's good...keeps things from being boring. I read (so far) almost an equal amount of positive and negative feedback posts about the Letterman performance. I must say though, someone mentioned that some of "us" must not like change, so that's why we criticize Jewel now? Well, um, maybe you should think about something for a second or two. Jewel *hasn't* changed in almost a year now! Think about it. So to say we don't like change is totally incorrect. We just don't like sub -(way sub) par performances...buy any potentially (proven-to-be) good, great artists! That's it. How long has Jewel had those pants? They look like the ones she's worn numerous times, and seeing how short they were, maybe they are quite old...but she hasn't grown any in several years...so who knows. The lingerie was very Madonna-esque indeed, as someone else already said. I just didn't "get" that aspect of things. I didn't even notice Steve didn't move much. Maybe the lingerie kept me from noticing that...just kidding. I didn't like that version at all. Didn't even sound "right"...if that makes sense. It would be like making the song Paranoid by Black Sabbath into a country song...just wouldn't work. For those who don't know who Black Sabbath is, don't worry about it. Ever heard of Ozzy? Nevermind. Anyhow, she just hasn't impressed me at all lately (in the past year or so). I'm sad to say that, cause I used to look so forward to her performances. I'm hoping and praying she comes through during her live concert here. At least a few songs with her playing guitar would be nice, I'm sure they will be my favorite part of the show anyway. I don't have much else to say...wait, I do. I did an experiment tonight...and some may not like what I'm about to say, but I'm just being honest. To set this up, about a month ago (maybe less), I recorded Miss Spears on the Letterman show. Well, tonight, after Jewel's performance, I cleared my mind, pretending to be a new fan to music. All types. No prejudices. Very open-minded. Pretending not to know ANYTHING about either artist beforehand...tougher than it may seem. I was a pure spectator of 2 TV performances, both from the Letterman show. Ony by a 17-year old, the other, a 25-year old...both female....both "pop" stars of the late 90's. Britney won. Overall. Sure, not perfect either, but overall, better. At least you could tell what song she was singing...she *was* covered up...and had on what looked to be "outer" wear...not lingerie. Now I know Jewel is talented and all that, of course, and I don't know nearly as much about Britney, but I do know she's a good singer. And I have to say that Britney showed off *more* of her talent (not all of it by any means), than what Jewel did of her talent(s)...and she has many. So for a newcomer, a potential new fan (as I was pretending to be tonight in my experiment), Jewel didn't win me over with that performance. Maybe she would with some others, well I'm sure she would. But it just wasn't that fascinating to me. I've concluded now that Jewel can make orgasmic sounds with pretty much any of her songs...and somehow fit that into the lyrics. I just don't get that. Why? Why is that so important to her now? I mean, it must be, or else she wouldn't be incorporating it into her TV performances...that she know millions of viewers see. Did she do this on Storytellers too? If so, how many songs? How many did she play guitar on? I'm sure that was a great thing to go to, but why can't she resemble herself as she was on Storytellers more on national TV? I mean, I don't KNOW what she did or didn't do on the VH-1 show, I wasn't there, but I somehow doubt it was like what we all just witnessed on the Letterman show...I mean, she didn't wear lingerie did she? Anyhow, I know Miss Kilcher has tons of talent, it's just sad that for whatever reason, she's doing this now...whatever you choose to call it. Her voice still sounded hoarse, I hope she lets herself heal 100% before her US tour starts. I do feel bad for her, I know she's exhausted most of the time now...but it would be nice, and a relief for her too I'm sure, if she could just get on stage and play something like Near You Always again...acoustically, as she DID on Letterman before...was that even the same person? Yes, but hard to beleive now. Watch THOSE two performances back to back, (Near You Always from Letterman, and tonight's performance), and you'll see what I'm talking about. I promise that I'm not going to riff on her outfit or even her makeup. But I just heard this new Jupiter... and.. if this keeps up, I'm going to have to leave the list and dig myself a hole to crawl into so I don't have to watch her piss all of her talent away like this. Come on, everyone, I know that it's all subjective so even saying this is arrogant... but that... was CRAP! It was insincere and hardly worthwhile in any sense! Oh... nice voice! You're a great singer! Too bad YOU SOLD YOUR SOUL!!!! If I was the drummer, I'd hide behind a plastic divider, too, even a clear one... then I'd be at least one step closer to pretending I wasn't sharing the stage with Jewel when she slid further into the pit of... no longer being at all awesome. How the hell did it happen? Where did her MIND go!? Yeh, nice body. Yeh, nice voice. Dime a dozen. WHERE THE HELL IS THE BRAIN!? My girlfriend says Jewel hasn't really changed. I tried to believe that. But this is too radically bad to have come from the same person who kicked POY and all of those amazing songs on our angelfood. I used to feel good about being a huge Jewel fan. I used to be proud. But now I have to disclaim myself every time I call myself one... "I love Jewel... oh, the older stuff, that is." Perhaps I take it too seriously. Perhaps I'm too harsh. But... bah. Jewel is Jewel. anyone who is a true fan knows this. She does what she wants, and always has! Think about that for a moment....Jewel has always been mutli-faceted. She may be growing up a bit (not that I think she has that far to go...she's one of the most sophisticated people I can think of) but she is the one that writes her songs! She is the one that sings her songs! She is the one (correct me if I'm wrong) that tells/shows the other band members what style she would like to sing a particular song in as she feels at that time. Her music is a reflection of her soul. It is not bad or good if she decides to make it more hip-hoppy or emotional. It is honest, it is real, and it is Jewel. If you can't see that this is her...this is what she is all about...being honest in the moment...letting your soul shine through, then maybe you should stop and re-think what exactly it is you like about her and her music. I am (frankly) appalled at some of the posts that pass judgment on how Jewel decides to sing. If you don't like it, don't listen. But I think Thumper (from Bambi) said it best, "If you can't say nothing nice...don't say anything at all!" I understand that everyone is completely welcome to their opinions but let's keep them just that...our opinions. We are here to support Jewel with her music, her DREAM. We can't change her and why would we want to? She wouldn't let anyone in the entire world change her anyways so there is really no point in telling us the things you don't like about her singing. That is still the one thing that she does her way. Maybe her clothes, hair, and make-up are done by others but noone else can work her voice for her. So go back and watch Bambi again if you have to, and let's be nice okay? On that note, I love it when the rarer facets of Jewel shine through in her music. I love the new version of Jupiter and I am so overwhelmed with emotion in anticipation of seeing her live in concert with my very own two eyes in July. She has helped me so much in realising my own dreams. I was always told by the people who were supposed to love me most that my dream to become a singer is just a fantasy and that I really need to get a job. Well, I didn't give up, and just this past Monday I had my first real step forward in achieving my dream. I went to a music studio and made my first demo tape singing Jewel songs (the ones I could remember under that much pressure!) which a songwriting duo looking for a female singer is probably reviewing right this minute! I had a dream last night that when at the concert in July I met Jewel and all I could do was let the tears roll in absolute awe of my greatest inspiration. Then again tonight I envisioned myself meeting Jewel (while watching Letterman) and the tears welled up again. There are no words to describe how much Jewel and her mother, and all you guys mean to me and one day when my dream comes true and I have the opportunity to speak out to thousands of people I will thank all of you. That's about as much mushy stuff as any of us can handle for one post, so I think I will go now. I hope I got my point across, I can never find the right words for this kind of stuff.
