But for those of us who weren't, the broadcast is prob'ly gonna be a disappointment. Do you really think they're gonna air something like Grey Matter or Sometimes It Be That Way or Love Me Just Leave Me Alone? I doubt it. You're gonna get You Were Meant For Me, Hands(I really really hope not but it is quite probable), Who Will Save Your Soul, and maybe 2 more songs. Hopefully they don't go so commercial, but odds are they will. Look at the recent Dave Matthews Storytellers. Not that it wasn't good, but Dave did about 20 songs and they picked all pop-singles. So my expectations are low, as they should be, and any non-mainstream non-pop-singles we get will be pleasant surprises Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 01:17:55 EDT From: Salinger99@aol.com Subject: * Storytellers!!!!! :-) Hey, everybody!!!!!!!!! In case you can't tell, I thought Storytellers was a blast!!!! LOL. It was so bizarre being in such close proximity to Jewel for the first time. My heart rate just about doubled. LOL. Especially when she passed real close to me. And she signed my first edition copy of ANWA!!! :-) I almost died!!!!! I had a perpetual smile on my face all after the show, and I held it in my hands all the way home so it would be safe, and the signature wouldn't rub off. I'm going to the framers tomorrow to have it shadowboxed along with my ticket. LOL. She signed the smooth cover with washable marker or something, so I want to get it preserved ASAP. I should've had enough sense to open the book, and let her sign the inside, so that the sig wouldn't be so fragile, but as you can probably tell, star struck doesn't even begin to describe my state of mind that I was in tonight. LOL. The closer she was to me, the less coherent I was. Anyway, I ramble on. LOL. :-) She sang absolutely wonderfully. I thoroughly enjoyed everything she performed. And having Steve Poltz there to play guitar for her was an extra treat. Sue was next to me chatting with him after the show, but all I could think was "I have to be ready with the book when Jewel comes down the aisle. I have to be ready with the book when Jewel comes down the aisle," so I missed out on meeting him. He and the other band members were tossing out guitar picks after the show, but I didn't move quickly enough to snatch one. Jewel had a cold or something, BTW, which is why I think she skipped her customary yodel. :-( She did, however, do a little rendition of a portion of "Anything Goes" at the request of another EDA, while they were getting her make-up fixed. And she was so amazingly nice, shooting the breeze with audience members and such, and making a joke if you yelled out something silly. :-) And she has a million-dollar smile. She's one of the friendliest human beings on Earth. I was disappointed that they only had her read one poem, however. But the night was still a blast. The only drawbacks to the evening were that since I was on an aisle seat, I had to scrunch in everytime the roving cameraman needed to get a shot, and that the folding seats were far too Spartan. LOL. Oh, and I almost forgot! She told great stories! I don't know if it's been posted yet, but listen to this one. As we all know, before Jewel's fame, Jewel and Steve Poltz took a trip down to Mexico, where WWSYS was written. However, you may not know this colorful story. LOL. Here it goes (I won't do half the justice Jewel did to it). Jewel and Steve arrived in this ghost town, and broke into this abandoned waterfront hotel to stay. According to Jewel, Steve didn't consider it "breaking into" the place, because it wasn't very hard. LOL. ;-) Anyway, the next day, these Mexican policemen come up to the hotel, say that they're patrolling the ghost town, and they start chatting with the pair, etc. Eventually, they invite Jewel and Steve out onto their boat. What the two don't know when they agree to this, however, is that they're on their way to a drug bust. LOL. (I'll skip the subtleties of the story, otherwise this post'll be a digest in itself.) Anyway, the federales arrive at a shore, and chase down the drug dealers. They make them tell them where the cocaine is located, and then confiscate it. The police then invite Jewel and Steve to a celebration party, since they believe them to be good luck, because they had been staking out the area for a month. At this party, the police have present the confiscated evidence, and they offer Steve to take some with him. Well, he proceeds to take some, and then they insist that he take more. According to Jewel, he ended up with quite a lot to take with him that night. LOL. (He most obviously didn't use it, if you're getting the wrong idea, BTW.) Anyway, that's the story with a lot of details cut out. :-) I should wrap up this post now. When Jewel came out to her limo, BTW, she waved good-bye out of the window as it pulled away. It was such a magickal night! I have so much more I could talk about, but this post is getting long enough, already. I want to give a shout out to everyone who was there, especially Brian, Sue, Pete, Jeff, Dennis, the two Erics, Jill, Iris, Lindsey, Kelli (the EDA, not the crew member; tee-hee; inside joke for those in attendance), and anyone I forgot. I'm thinking of going to the concert SUPER early to try to hassle Jewel as she gets there (just joshin'...about the hassle thing that is:), so maybe some of y'all will be there, eh? I'd join in any get together thingy but I'm only 16 and my ma has troubles letting me drive in the rain let alone meet people I know from the 'net for a friendly get together. - -Not that anyone asked to know this, but I gots me a J-O-B (I think...I hope...uh oh) so I can gets me some merchandise at the concert, and HOPEFULLY a guitar at one point or another. - -OH!!! And another thing - before late July comes around, I thought I'd get my begging for a recording of the VH1 thing out of the way because we folk in my area don't get the VH1:( Oh well! I know it's early, but I'm guessing the requests will come a jumping in. At least according to the details sent to the UKMIX list - i've just given the more interesting releases, not to say that i like all of them! If this is correct, it's interesting that DSL is coinciding with the Sarah Mclachlan single, which probably won't chart here, due to complete lack of airplay - i've not heard it once. I can't rate otherwise than that this programme (46 min) was really worth it....although they translated every word of Jewel into German.....so you can't hear her own voice too often....but hey sometimes it be that way..... I even have to deal with incredible bullsh*t at school with my senior exams. ANYWAY, I am writing to tell you that I had a wonderful time. I will try to write my "review" later this afternoon once I catch up on some things. Jewel was great, and I had a front row seat to see it all. I have to say it is the best experience I have ever had in my life, including meeting many EDA's. I would like to especially thank Kirsten for being so wonderful. Kirsten let me (keep in mind we had never met before this event) stay over her house on Tuesday night and we did this whole thing together. It was great and I couldn't have done it without all her help. I would also like to thank Lindsey and her Mom for caring so much when I got sick on the train ride back to New Haven. I was in a state where I thought I was going to die (that's how sick I felt) and they were there to comfort me:) I would also like to put a shout out to all the EDA's I met...you know who you are and I won't DARE to name you because I know I'll leave someone out. Jason, I will have your website review as soon as I possibly can. And if anyone who went to Storytellers has a complete setlist, I would love it if you could send it to me! Lindsey, I know you have THE setlist...but Jewel didn't even follow it exactly:)...you lucky devil you. Take care, Nicole:) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 10:53:28 EDT From: Tlcathome@aol.com Subject: * another storytellers post :-) Hello loves :-) Well, as you've already heard, the show was great - I think we all scared her pretty good now ;-) I think we'll be taking bets on whether or not they actually air the question/answer segment at all, but who knows.... I'm sure many EDA's won't like the new version of Jupiter, but I thought it was awesome - I love the cd version, but the faster version really rocks - she did say it's her new single. She really seems to have a lot of fun with her band - they seem to all have a lot of fun with her songs. We were seated right in front of Steve, so that was cool - who needs Jewel, we had Steve :-) hehe Let's see, you've already heard most of what went on through the show, so I'll tell ya a little about how the pre-show wait went. Hmm, they put us in a holding room that was over 80 degrees for a couple hours to wait to be seated (so we all looked fresh and lovely for the taping)- but we didn't complain ;-) They were kind enough to lead a group out to use the restroom before they seated us. Of course, a few of us roped woody - we have a couple natural ropers out there, it was fun to watch people try it out - not that many would - lol. It was great to meet so many EDA's - maybe many of you will feel much more comfortable about attending future gatherings now - like Bearsville!! hehe. Of course, when asked for requests everyone asked for their jewel favs - unfortunately, she seems to have forgotten the lyrics to what many of us would consider classics - such as carnivore - hopefully we'll see her revive a few of these! Hmmm, during the show she said she thought her next cd would be more of her faster songs - we'll see - she also likes to say it'll be country - lol. Well, I think that was maybe the first time she didn't claim that a song was new that was really one we all knew - must be she knew we'd know better :-) Gotta love her :-) We were very happy to hear do you wanna play - even though she said she wasn't supposed to do that one, so it's very doubtful it'll make it onto the show. Unfortunately, since we have kids, we needed to get home, so we didn't get to go out afterwards with the others, but I'm sure they'll all be more than happy to make us all green with envy at their stories of the bar and steve - brats :-Þ hehe Well, that's all I can think of for now, hope I didn't bore everyone! Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 11:07:47 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: * the vh1 after-party okay, lots of people i'm sure are writing about the AWESOME VH1 show, so i'll just tell you about what happened afterwards. about 10 of us went to a bar that had no name, so it's been dubbed either "the bar on 11th between A and B" or "the guiness bar". anyway, it's where steve poltz had said he might go later. we made our way down there and got a big table in the back where we chatted, drank, and were merry. someone from vh1 was there (the stage manager?) and a couple eda's said hello to him. about 90 minutes later (?) johnny comes running back to tell us jewel and doug pettibone just walked in! so, we were trying to remain calm and not rush up there, but unfortunately the stage manager guy told jewel there were a bunch of fans in the back so she said "let's go" and they all left! about an hour later, it had become apparant that steve wasn't going to show, so some of us started to leave. we didn't get farther than the front door, however, when steve and another guy arrived. steve greeted us and said to come in for a beer (ok! :-) so we went back in! we all hung out and talked for quite a while. the guy with steve turned out to be lee greene, who i'm sure you'll all remember from the jewel show accounts we've been getting from europe, especially from the dutch eda (was it mikhail or something?) lee said to say hello to him - he remembered your name and said you were a really great guy and he really enjoyed hanging out with you! lee is also a great guy. he met jewel in alaska when she was about 15. in fact, in that old rolling stone article where jewel talks about how she used to hitchhike all the time, lee is the guy who picked her up one day and admonished her for hitchhiking because it's dangerous, at which point she pulled a knife from her boot and said something like "would you f*** with me?" so anyway, he is now responsible for her well-being....making sure she eats well and stuff. there was more, but this post is already way longer than i'm used to! i had a great time and met a ton of great newbie's as well as several eda's that have been on the list for years but had never been to a gathering. of course, now that they have, they'll never miss another, i'm sure!! oh yea, and... > Tuff - TIE (Michael) wrote: > List Trivia Dare: What was the subject of Amy's (W1ggy2) first post to the > list? damn - even i don't remember THAT one!!! amy :-) <------me ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #311 ***************************
