Well, two days ago he comes to class and he goes "Did you see Jewel get made fun of on SNL? With the poetry and stuff..." and I'm like "Yeah" and he's all "Ha ha it was so funny" and then he continued to tell me how bad Jewel's poetry is, etc. and how he just liked to watch her get eaten at the end. Then today he says he liked the skit with her in the log cabin, with her whining about how she lived in her car and saying she lived in Alaska and he said "good, go back there" and how even she couldn't tell her songs apart. I'm not a very big Jewel fan anymore, although she'll have a place in my heart, so I didn't take the time to argue about the stereotypes that the world has given Jewel. She is a good poet, and her songs are distinctly different, and she did not blow the van and Alaska out of proportion, her interviewers did...so I held my tongue. Anyway, I thought that was weird. One minute, he said he liked her, the next thing I know I asked if I could do a paper on her (we had to write about a woman) and he said "Why would you want to?" etc. (Note: I chose Susan B. Anthony instead). I brought this up 'cause someone said they wrote about Jewel for an English paper, and it reminded me of the incident. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 00:36:17 EDT From: Prism14960@aol.com Subject: * NJC: class of '99! Subject: * Jewel b-day present (belated) Hey Angels, I wanted to tell everyone about my belated present to Jewel. I tried to get this finsihed last month but schedules conflicted! What the basic plan i did was this: I have been an avid skydiver for years and wanted to incorporate that for a Jewel b-day present for months! We went up pretty high to make sure we got it right. Myself and a friend attached a smoking banner to out legs which read, "Happy Birthdday Jewel Kilcher." We did a few flips and twists but the best was at the end when we did a full twist at a record number of 30 times (this has been tried many times but few have lasted the g-force thus knocking them unconcious) Well, that's my present to Jewel, all recorded and being edited as i speak! Hi everyone, especially those in the New York/New Jersey area, I've been through this before & I want to keep insanity to a minimum so please pay attention closely! Read this complete post BEFORE replying. There's going to be IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS throughout this post so READ IT ALL, please. You will NOT be replying to this address so do NOT just hit reply. OK. Here we go! As you know, Jewel has plans to film a VH1 "Storytellers". We're inviting 75 of you to participate as the audience for this program, which will take place at an undisclosed (for now) location in NYC a little over a week from now on Wednesday, June 9th. ONLY 75 EDAs can participate in this. Those 75 "invitees" will be put on the guest list, will receive FREE tickets & will require identification to get in. The tickets will cost you nothing. :-) For this particular event, you will need to be available by phone and/or email all next week to be contacted by the VH1 production staff. You will not be able to just "show up" & get a ticket. I realize many of you will only be able to come if accompanied by a parent or friend. If that's the case, those people may not be able to participate & may have to wait for you outside. How many reply to this will determine whether guests (or some guests) will be allowed in. VH1 will determine that after evaluating the responses. What I'm going to do is this: I'm going to put the names of all EDAs who reply between now & Monday evening on a list with their information. The names of these people will be forwarded to VH1 on Tuesday. They (VH1) will personally contact the 75 EDAs (NOT ME!!) & they will select the 75 invitees. They will instruct you personally on anything else you'll need to know when they contact you. And if they choose you, they will of course inform you what time & where to be in NYC on June 9th for the taping. I realize its a holiday weekend & not the best time to do this, but time is limited. I'm simply doing the best I can with the parameters given. Understand that & refrain from complaining about it (to me, at least ;-) To be one of the 75 EDAs to join us, you must first determine 2 things now & then proceed with the instructions. They are simple yes/no answers ONLY. (Do not elaborate with any extenuating circumstances): 1.) Can I DEFINITELY be in New York City on June 9th? 2.) Can I be available for contact next week (June 1st->4th)? Send your 2 answers along with the following information. VH1 needs ALL THIS INFORMATION if you want to be considered!!! 1)your full name 2) age & sex 3) phone number (with area code!) 4) best email address to contact you 5) full postal mailing address (they will likely FEDEX you the tickets!) 6) will you need a parent, guardian or friend to accompany you to NYC? If so, their name. **********And very important!************* 7) Three questions you would ask Jewel if given the opportunity Send this information to me ASAP at the following address ONLY! MrBBReply@aol.com I am the only one who will have your info & I will not share it for any purpose outside this project. If you forget to include any of the information or you reply to any of my other addresses, you will not be considered for participation, so reply only if you follow ALL the instructions above. Last time we did this in NYC, many people forgot to include all the requested information in their excitement & were deleted unfortunately. So please, do not forget to include all the requested information!! This particular "Storytellers" is going to be unique because not only will Jewel perform & tell stories to the intimate studio audience, but VH1 will select 20 of you to participate in a cozy sit-down chat with Jewel. This will also be part of the program. Thus the reason for your 3 questions. If you'd enjoy attending the "Storytellers" filming in NYC & can follow the instructions, we'd love to have you there! Over the next few days, please realize this is far more insane for me than you, so please don't send me questions & just read & follow the instructions carefully now. Once you have replied, please do not write in again & do not write me to check status. The 75 people will be contacted by VH1 personally to confirm that they can attend. I will not be able to give you personal status reports, so please don't ask. OK. Send the required info to MrBBreply@aol.com now. I hope many who want to participate can & all the rest of you will watch Jewel & your fellow EDAs on VH1. I look forward to seeing you there! GOOD LUCK! :-) MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 17:21:23 -0700 From: "The Glittery Starry EDA" Subject: * Jewel in Paris, It was the best that I've seen. Dear fellow EDA's, Here is my review of the concert in Paris. It was really great. We arrived at Gare du nord at 14.20 and we went to our hotel that was about three minutes away from L'Olympia. They had a very nice light announcement above the entrance. We waited a while at the star entrance but we didn't see them. When it was 17.15 we saw Tony and he talked to us. Then someone from Warner came out who said to us that Jewel was already inside so went over to the entrance because you could choose your own place and we ( Michiel and I ) wanted a good seat. We waited in front of the door with about 65 other fans and then the security came and said that we had to go stand at the cashiers deck between the fences. So we stood there and there were really a lot of people. Then Jewel came out with Brady and some girl. At 19.15 they opened the door and we ran in. We ran down the stairs and we had a front row seat. Then we talked to Lee Greene. At 20.00 Steve came on stage and started to do his set. It was really great. He sung Waterfalls the TLC song ) and that sounded terrific. He is a real good rapper. Then a few minutes past nine Jewel came on. Everyone in the audience was real enthousiastic and was screaming etc. I think Jewel really liked it because she was really great. She even did a second encore. Someone from the audience requested Emily ( it was the man standing next to me ) but she forgot the words so I said the words to her whenever she couldn't go further with the song. When they did AOF she gave hands to the people who were standing in front of the stage. Then she said that she was going to do a new song that she only did once before but she couldn't remember where so Michiel yelled it to her and she said : I have to rely on you , FREAK. After the concert we waited for her to come out but that took very long. Tony came out again and he told us that they would just drive throug with the bus ad that she wasn't going to give any autographs. So we went to a restaurant to get a bite to eat end when we were sitting there we saw their busses drive by. This was my last concert but I also think that is was the best. She was really great and played great and was very talky to the audience. Greetings Lotti ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 15:03:33 EDT From: Emilie0278@aol.com Subject: * concert Paris Hi EDAs, I went to my second Jewel concert last wednesday in Paris, and she was awesome. I don't remember the setlist exactly (but I'm sure Michiel will). She was in a really good mood, talking to the audience, joking... it was the Jewel I heard on my angelfood tapes, you know the Jewel who says "Shut up while I'm talking", the Jewel who says "last time I were here there were 12 people", the Jewel who forget the lyrics (the audience asked for Emily, and she said she haven't played that song for 3 years but she did it and it was great, a girl in the front row was telling the words to her), the Jewel who tells the drug bust story, the Jewel who yodels. it was definitely a major concert. Steve was great too, he sang songs from his album (Everything about you, The great mystery, Silver lining), the famous Ten Chances and The Star Wars Song, a few songs I never heard but sounds really nice, and an amazing version of TLC's Waterfall. that's all for the concert but I hope my fellow EDAs who were there too will tell more. here is my personal story (and meeting with the band) : I arrived in Paris at noon so I walked in the city for a while, I walked til the Olympia and there I saw the name of Jewel in big red letters ( and Steve's name in small red letters), it was really impressive. then I walked around and I met Brady, he was nice, he tried to speak french with me, he signed my tourbook and asked me where was the entrance, but I didn't know. then I saw Steve in the street, he asked me where he could find a MacDonald, but I didn't know neither, he said to me "I need a cheeseburger", he signed my tourbook and my One Left Shoe booklet. after that I met Alex, Arnaud, Aurel and Guillaume, the french EDAs, it was nice to finally meet someone you only know by the Internet. we were waiting on the line, talking about Jewel, and Tony and Doug were walking nearby, and they signed my tourbook too (I met Tony four times in the afternoon and he was really friendly). And I hope Jewel and Steve will come back soon in Europe (and in France)...'cos I miss them already. With them, Jewel has explained hidden male depression and also shown her own travel down the same path. To even say that it is male depression is almost silly since it serves to effect all of humanity. What do you think she is talking about when she says, "We've been down so long"? Not only is she sharing the depression that she has experienced, but she is also commenting on the social oppresions against all people that happen every day without people even realizing it. I think even more specifically (because it is the issue that effects her directly), she means to discuss the oppression of women. Thus her involvement in Lilith Fair. Anyway, have a good day.
