About Rusted Root, I just saw them in concert last weekend at Memphis' Music Fest, it was sooooooo awesome, they are an incredibly awesome band, especially in concert, my brother has been a fan of them for about 5 years, but I didn't really care for them, I mean I knew their music, but I wouldn't really call myself a fan, until Music Fest, they are really really awesome in concert! I didn't realize all the songs they wrote, there were a lot of familiar songs they played that I knew somehow, as a matter of fact, I heard one of their songs playing on the radio on the way home from Music Fest.....but anyway, I'm sure you'll enjoy their show, they're a really great band, and they really wanna make you "Dance like no one is watching" ;-) Brandon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 21:12:44 PDT From: "Andrea Schuster" Subject: * Re: NJC: Re: rusted root/Jewel (reply-LONG!) >couple of their earlier CD's (an EP, "Cruel Sun", and "When I Woke" (which >Send Me On My Way is off of), and they're actually quite enjoyable... they >released an album maybe a year ago, which I forget the name of, they released an album in 96 called "remember" and one this past november called "rusted root" (self-titled) >That's about all the input I can give about them... maybe someone else >can supply some more facts & opinions... earlier i had asked what people thought of this pairing but i guess i should have supplied some information. i'm also on the rusted root list and am a huge fan of them. i've seen them three times in the past year and each show is different--they have a widely varied setlist and are always making small but intricate changes in their live show. they've been playing together since 1990. there's 6 of them (5 guys, one girl) and i can best describe their music (tho it doesn't do it justice) as tribal. all 3 times i saw them, they came equipped with 6 or 7 hand drums, a full drum set and even a garbage can. in every live show (one thing that DOESN'T vary) they play a drum trip, better known on some setlists (fyi) as agbadza. this, in my most humble opinion, is the best part of the entire show as they're always experimenting with it. liz berlin (backup vocalist, guitar player, etc) belts out beautiful, unique, almost haunting vocals during this part of the show. their biggest song, as kevin mentioned, is "send me on my way" but they're also known for "ecstasy", "martyr", "cruel sun" and "virtual reality" (off the twister soundtrack). i have TONS of live stuff (2 full shows of 2 hours and more) on my ftp site which i'd be glad to give anyone interested an account to, just email me. also, i can make wavs off any of the albums for anyone and upload them onto my site, just let me know what you want. sorry this has been so long but i could go on and on even still. bottom line: their live show is amazing. they're a very grounded and grateful band. they dance on carpets in their bare feet, they play instruments i've never even SEEN, let alone heard of (liz plays a washboard she found in her mother's basement). they're just amazing, their live show is not to be missed. ok, i'm going to shut up now. if anyone would like to contact me, i'd be glad to give more info. :) oh, web sites: http://www.rustedroot.com http://www.public.iastate.edu/~thinker/rustedroot/ (michael dickey's site, better than the original) peace! andrea :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 22:41:52 -0700 From: Diana Ruiz Subject: * Looking to trade Hey angels... The Molson Ampitheater isn't exactly the best venue, but now they're playing in a *hockey arena*? I haven't been to the ACC, so I'm just guessing that it's not exactly a great concert venue. Here's an interesting fact for you to spin whatever way you want: according to toronto.com, the ACC holds 22,500 for concerts, while the Molson Ampitheatre only holds 16,000. The good news? WHAT IS IT? The 1999 Jewel Web Awards are made to honor distinguishing Jewel sites out there in the wonderful land of HTML. WHY? Well, being a Jewel site webmaster myself, I know how much people go through to make a quality Jewel site. I created the Jewel Web Awards to honor those who put in the most effort. These people certainly deserve to be recognized, don't they? GET INVOLVED. I was going to hold this off until Jewel's birthday, but I just COULDN'T hold it back. So, go to and you all can choose the Surfers' Choice winners in each of the categories.. A select group of others and myself will choose the regular awards. On June 15, the winners will be announced and given their awards. I hope you take the opportunity to vote. It'll only take a minute or two! Maybe since I live close to the Pittsburgh area they are a little more well-known here. Let me first begin by saying that you will all love the concert even more with them as the opening act. They have a "move your body" kind of beat and they have a really great percussion-driven sound. My roommate is a huge Root fan and she got me into them a couple of years ago. They usually play pretty big venues in this area (Northeaster Ohio/Western Pennslyvania) and their concerts have a really nice feel to them. Everybody is in a good mood and I've always had a good time at the show. I'm confident everybody seeing Rusted Root will have a good time. I love it when it hurts you . Jimi Hendrix "Crosstown Traffic" I can remember the guitar riffs, but i cant remember the lyrics. I listen to him before i do shows. It's just a great groove, that sexy groove Ella Fitzgerald "Miss Otis Regrets" Its a Cole Porter song. I think a lot of people sang it but the version i have is by Ella Fitzgerald. When i was teaching myself voice, i would always listen to her. she very versatile, and she really uses her voice more like a instrument Public Enemy "bring the noise" You wouldn't have thought i listened to it but i really like it. I just love the lyrics- the aggression and the power are great buts it's also really smart. I listen to new rap,too- I like Method man;Eminem's Funny The Rolling Stones "Brown Sugar" I just love sticky fingers in general. I've been playing a lot of electric guitar lately, and sticky fingers is the best for the kind of Keith Richards rhythm I've been doing a lot more rock and roll in my shows. My next record might be more of a rock record ok that's the end of that i would love to see Jewel do some kinda of duet with maybe the stones or hey maybe even method man what do you guys think ??? email me Chris Pepsi Drinking Angel http://members.aol.com/Narciso45/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 00:19:46 +0200 From: Koos van Zyl Subject: *DSL moves up 2 hit degrees to #31! This event is called Bearsville. I have some questions for whoever was/is planning it. Can you reply to me personally please :o) 1.) When is it? I believe I heard/read that it was July 16-18. 2a.) Is there any cost associated with it for each person involved? 2b.) How much?? 3.) Is there a transportation system set up yet like last year there was a sort of van "Angel needs a ride" deal? :) 4.) Are there any RSVP dates set up yet, if any at all? I just don't wanna miss out on it this year and what tends to happen with me is I find out about it after I plan something else and I already have June full...July's 3 weekends full if that's the right weekend.
